Welcome! This is the user guide for Transcode Tools, a Windows GUI for remuxing and transcoding MKV video files. It wraps mkvmerge, ffmpeg, ffprobe, and robocopy behind a single interface focused on shrinking your media library without sacrificing quality you'd actually notice.
If you're brand new, start with the Quick Start. If you've used the app for a while and want to dig into something specific, jump straight to the relevant section below.
- Quick Start — Get from "I just downloaded this" to your first finished file in under 15 minutes.
- Concepts — The folder model, settings files, Remux vs Transcode, hardware acceleration. Read this once and the rest of the guide makes more sense.
- Remux Workflow — Step-by-step walkthrough of the remux side.
- Transcode Workflow — Step-by-step walkthrough of the transcode side.
- File Name Corrections — Title case, resolution append, missing year detection.
- User Preferences — Overview of the Preferences window, with detail pages per tab:
- HDR, Dolby Vision, and Special Cases — HDR10/HDR10+/DoVi, interlaced sources, the visual indicators.
- Logging & Troubleshooting — Where logs live, how to read them, common issues.
- Auto-Move and Output Verification — Completed folders, color flashes, output checkmarks.
- Reference Tables — Quality flags, bitrate options, file suffixes.
- A. Glossary
- B. Plex Naming Cheat Sheet
- C. Recommended Source Quality
- D. Changelog — See the GitHub Releases page.
