Owner ruling 2026-10-16 (AI-0315 dossier PX-1374, verified PX-1375): ARCHIVE D1/D2/D4/D5/D6/D7 with in-ledger rationales (kept ignored); CONVERGE D3 — widen validate_tool_name to agent class + 6 dependents, un-ignore drift test as converged, eleven->ten nit.\n\nKnown follow-up (not this PR): bitty-ai-host carries independent duplicate strict validators (tool_dispatch.rs:376, mcp_placement.rs:206) — pre-existing divergence, alignment tracked separately.\n\nReview: APPROVE (PX-1378 ai-0316-reviewer).\nGates: just check + act -n, green.\n\nPriority: P1 | Area: vocabulary | Labels: feat,P1 | Milestone: v0.1.0 | RFC: n/a | Task: AI-0316 | Closes: #508

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Tool names containing dots or hyphens are now accepted when they meet the existing naming rules. Invalid names remain rejected, and unregistered valid names are reported as unknown tools.
    • Updated runtime checks to reflect the revised validation behavior.

Owner ruling 2026-10-16 (AI-0315): ARCHIVE D1/D2/D4/D5/D6/D7
with in-ledger rationales; CONVERGE D3. Widen validate_tool_name
to the agent class [a-z0-9_.-] + 6 dependents (registry, precheck,
prompt/skill docs, consent gate, MCP sanitize, fail-closed test);
un-ignore drift test as converged; eleven->ten nit.

Review: APPROVE (PX-1378 ai-0316-reviewer).
Gates: just check + act -n, green.

📝 Walkthrough

The runtime now accepts dotted and hyphenated tool names while retaining existing name restrictions. Tests, prompt documentation, and vocabulary conformance records reflect the updated grammar and its effects on tool registration and lookup.

Changes: Tool-name grammar convergence

Layer / File(s) Summary
Accept dotted and hyphenated tool names
crates/bitty-ai-runtime/src/tool.rs, crates/bitty-ai-runtime/tests/vocabulary_conformance.rs
Tool-name validation accepts dots and hyphens while retaining existing restrictions. Tests cover accepted and rejected name shapes, including the 64-character limit.
Registration and lookup behavior
crates/bitty-ai-runtime/src/tool.rs, crates/bitty-ai-runtime/src/bridge.rs, crates/bitty-ai-runtime/tests/runtime_fail_closed.rs
Registration tests accept dotted and hyphenated specs. Unregistered dotted names pass shape validation and return UnknownTool. Bridge and runtime tests reflect the updated behavior.
Prompt documentation and vocabulary records
crates/bitty-ai-runtime/src/prompt.rs, crates/bitty-ai-runtime/tests/vocabulary_conformance.rs
Prompt documentation distinguishes tool-name and skill-name rules. Vocabulary conformance documentation records the grammar convergence, and several drift-ledger entries receive archived rulings.

Explanation

Issue #508 requires D1/D2/D4/D5/D6/D7 archive rationales and D3 convergence. The PR records the six archived drift entries in the conformance ledger. validate_tool_name now accepts ^[a-z][a-z0-9_.-]*$ and retains the 64-byte and lowercase-start checks. Registry, precheck, prompt validation, consent, and fail-closed tests use the widened behavior. The former drift test is renamed and runs as tool_name_grammar_converged. Tests cover dotted and dashed names, invalid shapes, registration, lookup, and UnknownTool behavior.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed files are limited to runtime tool-name validation and its dependent registry, prompt, bridge, conformance, and fail-closed tests. The archive comments document the issue #508 owner rulings. The PR does not change the separately tracked bitty-ai-host validators. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Update the host name validators with the runtime grammar.

validate_tool_name now accepts dotted and hyphenated names. The E1d dispatch_with_tools path is wired end to end, but it calls the host validator before registry lookup. Host registration uses the same strict validator. Therefore, a valid runtime tool such as terminal.read cannot be registered or invoked through this endpoint.

Valid finding — this was the declared follow-up in the PR body (host duplicate strict validators are pre-existing divergence). Tracked as #510 / AI-0317, not silently dropped.

@Xuepoo Thanks for clarifying. The host-validator divergence is explicitly outside this PR’s scope and tracked in #510 / AI-0317. No additional change is needed in this PR for this finding.
