feat(component): installable execution supervisor component - #19
Conversation
…t (#2494) Add the executable `execution` component boundary on top of the landed supervisor: - `bitty-component.toml` (`execution`, 0.0.1, protocol [1, 1], `bitty-execution`) plus a closed fail-closed descriptor parser and `--check-manifest` validation. - Versioned stdio protocol v1: framed handshake, bounded Spawn/Terminate/ ReadOutput/Shutdown requests, Spawned/Started/Output/Exit/Canceled/ OutputView/Error replies, typed enums, 256 KiB frame cap, no file or argv surface outside an explicit Spawn. - `bitty-execution` server wrapping `JobRegistry`: serialized writer, Spawned-first ordering, synchronous output backpressure, typed cancel and deadline outcomes, bounded shutdown, PTY refused as host-owned. - `JobRegistry::with_output_observer` streaming seam (store totals unchanged) with an integration probe. - `scripts/package-component.sh` per-target tarball, sidecar, and SHA256SUMS with descriptor/version/digest validation; shape test; CI Linux x86_64 build/package/smoke job. No tag and no R2 publication. - Live tests over the real binary: command lifecycle and exit status, typed cancellation, hard timeout, retained output, failed spawn, unknown/stale ids, oversized-frame rejection, and a SIGKILLed component whose host and already-spawned job survive. 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Register the job gate before the supervisor thread can produce output or events.
registry.spawn(spec) starts the supervisor thread immediately. gates.insert(record.get(), job) runs only after a later registry.get call. During this window, JobGates::resolve finds no gate. At line 980, state.jobs.get(&record)? then returns None at once; the wait for publication never happens.
The two callers have different consequences:
ComponentOutputObserver::on_output(line 1015) silently drops the firstOutputchunks of a fast child.monitor_eventsdropsStarted,CancelResolved, orStoppedframes. A missedStoppedframe is the worst case. The cursor advances past the event, so the host never receivesExitfor that job.active.mark_exitednever runs, sowait_until_idlespends the fullSHUTDOWN_WAITat shutdown.
The trigger is a fast spawn failure (missing program) or an immediate write by the child. The window is short, but it is real under load. The README ordering guarantee (output and Exit gated on Spawned) does not hold in this window.
The fix is to take the gate lock before registry.spawn and insert the gate before releasing it. A resolve caller then waits on the mutex until the gate exists. No deadlock is possible. registry.spawn never calls into JobGates. on_output runs outside the registry lock and outside the store lock. The monitor calls resolve only after events_since releases the registry lock.

Follow-up for the latest CodeRabbit findings, fixed in
Validation after this follow-up: |

Compatibility blocker addressed in Teardown P2 disposition: preserved bounded behavior and documented the unresolved resource lifetime precisely. After the 5 s job wait, a monitor blocked in an embedder writer may detach after the 2 s join bound with registry/gate/writer references until the write returns or peer closes. Registry drains may detach after their 5 s bound, retaining a bounded output-store reference until inherited pipes reach EOF; descendants retaining pipes can keep drains alive after leader exit. This remains a blocking risk for embedders, not claimed as solved. Scoped checkout hardening added only to the review-named CodeQL and snapshot-source workflows; CI checkout was already hardened. Local product/workspace tests, just check, actionlint, package-shape, packed Linux live suite (18/18), and gitleaks pass. |
