[CTX-0012] feat(release): smoke every packaged target and record digests - #24
Follow-up to merged PR #21 for bitty-terminal/bitty#2491. PR #21 landed the five-target release matrix, per-target tarballs, SHA256SUMS, catalog fragments, and the full-matrix verifier. This PR closes the remaining acceptance gaps:
Per-OS protocol smoke.scripts/component_smoke.py (via scripts/component-release.sh smoke) spawns the unpacked tarball executable, verifies --version, sends Hello, asserts HelloAck protocol/component/version/capabilities, sends a raw RGBA DecodeRequest, asserts the exact DecodeResponse shape/pixels, then sends Shutdown and expects ShutdownAck + exit 0. Both the PR component job and the tag package job run it on every native runner before uploading that target's artifact. The previous Linux-only cargo test --test serve_loop step is replaced by this artifact-level check; cargo test still runs the full Rust suite on every leg.
Runnable-artifact gate.verify now rejects a tarball whose executable is empty, lacks an execute bit (Linux/macOS), or does not carry the expected ELF/Mach-O/PE magic for the advertised OS, in addition to the existing member shape, descriptor identity/version/protocol, sidecar, and SHA256SUMS checks. A supported target with no artifact still fails the full-matrix gate.
Per-target digest record.scripts/component-release.sh record --dist dist --output release/component-digests.toml writes one row per supported target with the tarball and executable SHA-256 values. verify --record requires an exact match with the verified artifacts. The record is written outside dist/ so the publisher's exact file-set gate is unchanged. bitty-component.toml keeps its zero-digest placeholder; each archive's embedded descriptor still carries that target's real digest, and install-time digest verification still refuses the sentinel.
Tests/docs. New fixtures cover the smoke success/failure paths, record generation/match/tamper/missing-target cases, wrong-platform executable magic, and missing execute bits. just check now runs the smoke fixtures; README and docs/component-release-matrix.md describe the new evidence and gate.
macOS/Windows protocol smoke is CI-only by design: the workflow runs on macos-15, macos-15-intel, windows-2025, ubuntu-24.04, and ubuntu-24.04-arm, and no artifact is uploaded before its native smoke passes.
Catalog rows for the registry follow-up
The release emits the fragment via scripts/component-release.sh catalog; it is not uploaded by this repository because extensions/catalog.v1 is shared across components. The registry will need one row per target for graphics 0.0.25:
URL shape: https://cdn.bitty.run/extensions/graphics/0.0.25/<target>.tar.gz; digest = the target's tarball digest from the release SHA256SUMS / release/component-digests.toml.
Run a stdlib protocol smoke (Hello/DecodeRequest -> HelloAck/DecodeResponse)
against the unpacked tarball on every native CI and release matrix leg, and
gate archived executables on size, execute bit, and ELF/Mach-O/PE magic.
The release now writes release/component-digests.toml with one row per
supported target (tarball and executable SHA-256) and verify --record
requires an exact match. The canonical bitty-component.toml keeps its
zero-digest placeholder; per-target descriptors still carry the real digest.
Refs bitty-terminal/bitty#2491.

Summary
Archive verification and digest records scripts/component_release.py, scripts/tests/component-release.test.sh, component-targets.toml, docs/component-release-matrix.md, README.md, justfile
Archive verification checks executable size, platform format, and mode. The record command writes per-target tarball and executable digests; verify --record checks the record against the supported targets and verified artifacts.
The smoke command checks the binary version, exchanges Hello and Shutdown messages, and validates a 1×1 RGBA decode response. Fixture tests cover success and failures, including mismatched responses and timeouts.
CI and release workflow integration .github/workflows/ci.yml, .github/workflows/component-release.yml, .gitignore, README.md, docs/component-release-matrix.md
CI and release jobs smoke-test extracted target archives. Aggregate jobs generate and verify the digest record and include release/ in uploaded artifacts.

bitty-terminal/bitty#2491: This PR adds per-target tarball and digest verification for the graphics component, which matches part of the issue’s requested artifact and verification coverage.
The release checks can accept a malformed protocol response or attest protocol bounds that were not checked in the archive. The local release instructions and recipes also have avoidable failure cases. Address these before merging, particularly the unbounded smoke output.

Git Bash expands $RUNNER_TEMP to a drive-letter path that tar treats as
literal backslashes, and native Python needs a Windows path for --binary.
Convert the stage with cygpath -u and pass the executable with cygpath -w.
make-component-dist.sh --print-url emits two lines; piping it to head
under pipefail can fail the job with a broken pipe. Capture the mapping and
take the first line with parameter expansion instead.
CI candidate catalog rows for graphics 0.0.25 at 3a69157 (from the verified graphics-component-package artifact of CI run 40569172393; this is a PR candidate, not a tag release):
Independently re-verified locally against the downloaded artifact: component-release.sh verify --dist .../dist --record .../release/component-digests.toml passed, and sha256sum -c SHA256SUMS reported OK for all five tarballs. The tag release must regenerate these values; the registry should consume the tag's catalog.v1 fragment.

Review comments at @docs/component-release-matrix.md:
- Line 194: Update the release instructions around the `record` command to
clarify that it requires artifacts for every supported target; either add a step
to collect the remaining target artifacts before recording or label the final
commands as aggregate-only.
Review comments at @justfile:
- Line 102: Quote each interpolated path argument in the smoke and record
recipes so paths containing spaces are passed as single shell arguments; apply
this to the binary, distribution, and output paths used by those recipes.
Review comments at @scripts/component_release.py:
- Line 640: Update inspect_archive to compare the archived descriptor’s protocol
bounds with the canonical component descriptor and reject mismatches, even when
archive checksums are valid. This ensures render_record cannot record canonical
bounds for an archive that contains different bounds.
Review comments at @scripts/component_smoke.py:
- Around line 259-264: In the frame-reading loop, reject advertised lengths
above the existing protocol response cap before calling read_exact, and make
self.frames a bounded queue so surplus frames cannot accumulate while the main
thread checks a reply.
- Around line 336-337: Update the ShutdownAck validation to require `ack` to
equal the single-byte frame represented by `TAG_SHUTDOWN_ACK`, rejecting frames
with trailing bytes while preserving the existing failure behavior.

Address CodeRabbit findings on PR #24:
- reject response frames above the protocol cap and bound the reader queue
- require an exact single-byte ShutdownAck
- compare the archived descriptor protocol bounds with the canonical record
- quote just recipe path interpolations
- label the aggregate-only record/verify commands in the matrix doc
- cover the new rejection paths with fixtures.
Superseding the earlier candidate rows: final verified CI candidate for graphics 0.0.25 at ee857c9 (CI run 40570732535, graphics-component-package artifact). This is still a PR candidate, not a tag release.
Re-verified locally: component-release.sh verify --dist ... --record ... PASS for all five targets and sha256sum -c SHA256SUMS OK. The tag release must regenerate these values; the registry should consume the tag's catalog.v1.
Reviewed head ee857c9 (CTX-0012). Verdict: APPROVE; no blockers, findings below are minor follow-ups.
What I verified independently
Both workflows were read step-by-step, not just the description. Each matrix leg packages → unpacks dist/<target>.tar.gz into $RUNNER_TEMP/graphics-component → runs component-release.sh smoke on the extracted executable → emits its catalog row → only then uploads. component-aggregate/aggregate runs manifest → record → verify --record before its upload; publish needs aggregate.
CI logs at this head show component-smoke: PASS against the extracted tarball on windows-2025 (binary=D:\a\_temp\graphics-component\bitty-graphics.exe), ubuntu-24.04, ubuntu-24.04-arm, macos-15, and macos-15-intel.
Downloaded the CI aggregate artifact and re-ran the verifier locally: component-release.sh verify --dist dist --record release/component-digests.toml → PASS, 5 supported targets. The record and catalog contain exactly the five supported triples; x86_64-unknown-linux-musl and aarch64-pc-windows-msvc appear nowhere.
Packed 0.0.25 for x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu and ran the smoke against the extracted tarball → PASS (--version, Hello/HelloAck, 1x1 RGBA DecodeRequest/DecodeResponse, Shutdown/ShutdownAck, exit 0).
Negative checks all fail closed: record executable/tarball digest drift, missing row, missing file, extra/unsupported row, protocol drift; PE payload in a Linux tarball, missing execute bit, wrapper member, digest drift after manifest; record --output inside dist; unsupported musl tarball in manifest. Missing ShutdownAck and ack-then-no-exit both abort within --timeout and reap the child.
bitty-component.toml keeps the zero sentinel; package-component.sh/pack-component.sh and all Rust sources are untouched, so validate_for_install semantics are unchanged.
CodeRabbit: 5 findings, all fixed in ee857c9 with replies and bot acknowledgements; no open threads.
Minor findings (non-blocking follow-ups)
scripts/tests/component-release.test.sh:119 — make_tarball's extra argument is never 1, so the exact-member-set rejection has no fixture.
scripts/tests/component-release.test.sh:370 — the "record missing a supported target" fixture substitutes an unsupported triple instead of deleting a row; the deletion branch is unexercised.
scripts/tests/component-smoke.test.sh:163 — no fixture for "no ShutdownAck after handshake" or "ShutdownAck then never exits".
.github/workflows/ci.yml:133, component-release.yml:127 — chmod 755 … || true on every leg masks a missing archive exec bit locally.
.github/workflows/ci.yml:175, component-release.yml:163 — record + verify --record in the same job proves generator/verifier consistency only.
scripts/component_smoke.py:35 — bare import tomllib; mirror the friendly guard from component_release.py.
component-targets.toml:4-7 — "only a supported = true row can ever produce a tarball" overstates; unsupported bytes are refused at manifest/catalog/record.
scripts/component_release.py:167 — ArchiveInfo.executable_size/executable_mode are never consumed.
