Priority: P1 | Area: plugins/packaging | Labels: feat,P1,area:packaging | Milestone: v0.1.0 | RFC: DIR-030 | Task: CTX-0074

Summary

  • add the Core-compatible net component descriptor template for executable bitty-net and protocol [1, 1];
  • add bounded per-target packaging with target-specific descriptor digest, exact descriptor-plus-binary archive shape, sidecars, aggregate SHA256SUMS, and extensions/net/<version>/ URL mapping;
  • add CI package validation and a strict tag-only R2 publisher with immutable get-before-put and byte-identical read-back verification;
  • document the package shape and explicitly leave registry integration, tag creation, and live upload outside this PR.

Related #2111

Verification

  • just check
  • just component-dist-test
  • shellcheck -S warning scripts/package-component.sh scripts/publish-component.sh scripts/tests/package-component.test.sh
  • actionlint -color
  • gitleaks detect --source . --no-banner
  • act -n parsed the workflows and enumerated the new package-validation job; the full existing matrix expansion exceeded the bounded local timeout without reporting a workflow syntax error.

No tag was created and no R2 upload was performed.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Versioned releases can now publish the native net component package, with archive checksums and verification of uploaded files.
    • Component packages are available for Linux x86_64 and can be prepared locally for supported targets.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on package contents, local packaging, download URLs, checksums, and release distribution.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds a native component descriptor, scripts to package and validate component archives, and workflows to test, build, and publish packages for release tags. Documentation describes package contents, local packaging, URLs, and R2 publication.

Changes: Native component distribution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Define and create component packages
bitty-component.toml, scripts/package-component.sh, scripts/tests/package-component.test.sh, justfile, .github/workflows/ci.yml
The descriptor defines the net component metadata. The packaging script validates inputs, creates archives and checksums, and prints distribution URLs. The shell test checks package contents, checksums, URLs, and rejection of branch-based publishing. The just target and CI job run this test.
Build packages from release tags
.github/workflows/component-release.yml
The workflow checks release-tag conditions and version agreement, builds and packages the Linux target, then uploads the package artifact.
Publish package files to R2
scripts/publish-component.sh, .github/workflows/component-release.yml, docs/component-distribution.md, docs/README.md
The workflow invokes the publisher after packaging. The publisher verifies package files and remote objects, uploads missing files, and verifies uploaded contents. The documentation describes package distribution and publication.

The tag release can fail before it packages anything. Packaging can also publish stale or unchecked files to permanent download URLs. Fix the release job's tooling and tighten package validation before the first tag.

- Around line 40-41: In the release job, add the same setup-just step used by
the package-validation job before the “Run Rust quality gates” step so `just
check` can run.

Review comments at @scripts/package-component.sh:
- Around line 169-180: Update the candidate archive loop around valid_target to
verify each archive’s embedded descriptor version matches the version being
packaged before adding it to tarballs; exclude or reject archives with a
mismatched version so they are not included in SHA256SUMS.

Review comments at @scripts/publish-component.sh:
- Around line 27-37: Update the package validation around the files array and
SHA256SUMS check to require an exact match between each published archive and
its manifest entry, rejecting unlisted archives or manifest entries for missing
files. Validate every .tar.gz.sha256 sidecar against its corresponding archive
before publication rather than accepting it based on its filename alone.

Review comments at @scripts/tests/package-component.test.sh:
- Line 20: Update both package invocations in the test to read the fixture
version from its descriptor, and use that same version in the URL assertion.
Keep the existing target and other test behavior unchanged.
