[CTX-0007] chore(ci): run the Rust product gates and refresh contract status - #20
just check (prettier, markdownlint, metadata, hygiene, portable paths) was the only gate on push and pull request. The product recipe (fmt, clippy, tests) and every integration suite ran nowhere. #16 is correct on the workflow and on the stale contract text.
What changed
.github/workflows/ci.yml — the Rust job now runs the single just product recipe instead of a hand-copied cargo list, so CI and local verification cannot drift. The metadata and actionlint jobs are unchanged; the Linux component-package job keeps its build/pack/live-suite steps.
.github/actions/setup-rust/action.yml — new local composite action that reads channel and components from rust-toolchain.toml (1.98.1, rustfmt + clippy) and installs them. No workflow or local action carries a literal toolchain version any more.
justfile — product clippy gains --locked (the issue's exact gate). New ci-contract regression check: it fails when the workflow stops invoking just product, when a cargo gate (fmt/clippy/test) leaves the product recipe body, or when a workflow/local action pins a literal toolchain. It is wired into just check, so the metadata job enforces it too. New ci-local mirrors the CI jobs locally.
Verified negative behaviour of the new gate: deleting the just product step yields ci-contract: .github/workflows/ci.yml must invoke 'just product' (Rust suite) (exit 1); deleting cargo fmt from the product recipe yields ci-contract: the product recipe must run cargo fmt (exit 1); a literal toolchain: 1.98.1 yields ci-contract: pin the Rust toolchain in rust-toolchain.toml, not in .github (exit 1).
Pin decision (no Core edit here)
The issue's 5e720b4 claim is stale. Core 0.0.28 already links:
bitty-storageorigin/main head is 502c7f5, and its CI run 40025256192 passed fmt, clippy, and cargo test --workspace --locked. The 7bf5177 -> 502c7f5 diff is additive at the library surface (pub mod component, target-gated fs_at, doc-only changes to kv.rs/StorageBackend), so the linked-model bump is compatible in principle.
Core is a different repository and outside this task's scope, so it is not edited here. Follow-up for the bitty repo: after this PR merges, set both crates/bitty-terminal/Cargo.toml storage pins to 502c7f5 (one rev for linked model and component), run cargo check -p bitty-terminal --features storage-component to refresh Cargo.lock, and review atomic_io::IoError::is_uncertain handling in the Core adapter (post-rename durability failures must reload before retry).
actionlint -color -shellcheck= (1.7.12) — pass, no findings.
just workflows (actionlint + act -n, act 0.2.89) — pass with HTTPS_PROXY; without a proxy act cannot fetch action repositories on this host.
Toolchain: rustup 1.98.1 active via rust-toolchain.toml.
Remote CI
Head 137cc9e: Metadata gates, actionlint, Rust quality gates (fmt, clippy, test), Component package (linux x86_64), and CodeQL all pass. CodeRabbit's one inline finding (ci-contract matched its own literals instead of the product recipe) is fixed in 137cc9e and answered on the thread.
Scope / risk
CI, just recipes, and repository metadata only; no crate code, wire protocol, or security control changes. The component-package job is untouched except for how the toolchain is installed.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Chores
CI now runs Rust formatting, linting, and tests through a shared product check on pushes and pull requests.
The local CI command now includes the product checks, workflow validation, and CI contract checks.
Automated checks verify that required product gates remain configured in CI.
Documentation
Updated project guidance and verification notes to reflect the current CI checks and local workflow.
… status
The CI workflow never invoked the Rust suite: `just check` (prettier,
markdownlint, metadata, hygiene, portable paths) was the only gate on push and
pull request, so the integration suites executed nowhere.
- `.github/workflows/ci.yml`: the Rust job now runs `just product`
(`cargo fmt --check`, `cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets --locked` with
`-D warnings`, `cargo test --workspace --locked`) and installs the toolchain
and components pinned in `rust-toolchain.toml` through a local composite
action instead of a duplicated literal channel.
- `justfile`: add `ci-contract`, which fails when the workflow stops invoking
`just product`, when a cargo gate leaves the product recipe, or when a
workflow/action pins a literal toolchain; add `ci-local`; gate clippy with
`--locked`.
- `repo.toml`, `TODO.md`, `README.md`, `AGENTS.md`: record #1/#2 as closed,
CTX-0004 independent verification accepted at `f1f425c`, the CI product gate,
and the current Core pin state (linked model `7bf5177`, component `502c7f5`).
Core's linked-model re-pin is a separate repository task.

CI now installs Rust through a shared action and runs just product. The justfile checks that CI invokes the product gate and adds a local CI recipe. Project documentation and contract records update verification status.
Changes: Rust CI and product contract
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Shared Rust setup and CI wiring .github/actions/setup-rust/action.yml, .github/workflows/ci.yml
The composite action reads the channel and components from rust-toolchain.toml and passes them to the pinned installer. Both Rust jobs use the action. The rust job runs just product.
Product gate contract and local checks justfile, scripts/ci-contract.sh, scripts/tests/ci-contract.test.sh, AGENTS.md
The contract script checks the CI workflow, product recipe commands, and toolchain declarations. Its tests cover fixtures with missing or commented gates. check invokes the contract, ci-local combines checks, actionlint, and product validation, and Clippy runs with --locked. Guidance describes the product gate and contract check.
Verification status records README.md, TODO.md, repo.toml
The records mark CTX-0004 as accepted and update contract references and verification details.

Explanation
Issue #16 requires Rust gates on push and pull request, a green main gate, the reviewed Core storage-pin advance, and current contract status. .github/workflows/ci.yml invokes just product for push and pull request events. The product recipe runs cargo fmt, locked clippy, and locked tests. repo.toml records the CI gate and accepted verification status. The Core pin remains unadvanced; repo.toml records bitty-terminal 0.0.27 and no 0.0.28 pin. The current PR defers that required change to a follow-up.
Resolution

`ci-contract` searched the whole justfile for `cargo fmt`, `cargo clippy`, and
`cargo test`, so its own literals satisfied the check even after the product
recipe lost all three gates. Extract the product recipe body and require the
gates there, and re-verify the negative path (deleting `cargo fmt` from the
recipe fails the check).
Refs storage#16
justfile: ci-contract guard makes a metadata-only CI unlandable — it asserts the
workflow invokes just product, that the recipe keeps cargo fmt/clippy/test, and
that no literal toolchain version sits under .github; ci-local mirrors the jobs.
Positive guard (fails when the step disappears), so it is a real negative test target.
.github/actions/setup-rust/action.yml: toolchain read from rust-toolchain.toml
(single pin site preserved), sha-pinned action, set -euo pipefail with test -n.
.github/workflows/ci.yml: hand-copied cargo invocations replaced by just product;
no gate is removed (clippy gains --locked, aligning with the --locked test leg).
Metadata flips (README/TODO/repo.toml) record CTX-0004 acceptance and the CI
contract; no product-source, dependency-edge, lockfile or protocol change.
Residual note (non-blocking): core_pins records a bitty follow-up to advance the linked
model rev — that belongs to a bitty task, not this repo.
Verdict: no blocking findings; merging as a CI/metadata change with green product gates.
Corrected repo.toml to bitty-terminal 0.0.27 (current origin/main); README, TODO, and AGENTS had no stale 0.0.28 claim.
Passed gates: scripts/ci-contract.sh; scripts/tests/ci-contract.test.sh; just check; just metadata; just product; just actionlint; just workflows (actionlint + act -n); shellcheck -S warning; shfmt -d; gitleaks detect --source . --no-banner. No product behavior changed. Not merged.
Add an accept-case test for quoted and escaped # in ci-contract.sh.
All new cases check that the script rejects a bad justfile. No case checks that strip_shell_comment keeps # inside quotes. If the quote or escape parsing breaks, the script treats a quoted # as a comment start and hides a real gate that follows it. The negative tests still pass in that state.
Add a case with an escaped quote inside a double-quoted string, followed by #, and then a gate. Add a single-quoted # case as well. The script must accept this justfile.
✅ Proposed test case
if "$tmp/ci-contract.sh" "$tmp" >/dev/null 2>&1; then
echo 'ci-contract test: an all-comment product recipe was accepted' >&2
exit 1
fi
++cat >"$tmp/justfile" <<'EOF'+product:+ cargo fmt --all -- --check+ echo "escaped \" # still quoted"; cargo clippy+ echo 'single # quoted'; cargo test+EOF+if ! "$tmp/ci-contract.sh" "$tmp" >/dev/null 2>&1; then+ echo 'ci-contract test: a quoted # was treated as a comment' >&2+ exit 1+fi
Based on learnings: self-tests for quoting logic must use an escaped quote inside a quoted string followed by #, so that a quote-termination bug becomes detectable.

Add an acceptance case to the CI contract self-test after the all-comment
rejection case: write a justfile containing a double-quoted string with an
escaped quote followed by a quoted # and a gate, plus a single-quoted # and
another gate. Assert that ci-contract.sh accepts it, so the test detects comment
stripping that mistakes either quoted # for a comment.

CodeRabbit disposition for the latest bb2286f nitpick: declined as a code change for this review. I independently exercised the exact acceptance cases requested—single-quoted #, double-quoted # after an escaped quote, and escaped \#—and verified that valid product recipes pass; mutation cases with a missing gate still fail. The parser behavior is correct, no product behavior changed, and this re-review was explicitly authorized without edits.
