What the regression proves

A finite, opt-in regression drives the real application input callback
(<TerminalApp as AppHandler>::handle_event) with an in-memory, headless
EventContext and a read-only owning-VM entry counter, pinning the
P0-AC-015 / overview invariant 4 boundary that issue #2213 flags:

  • Zero owning-VM entries during input — an accepted bound band click
    release and an accepted bound band wheel route into the runtime's bounded
    queues without entering the owning plugin VM.
  • Exactly-once later cold delivery — the distinct cold pump
    (TerminalApp::deliver_band_input, now called from drive_tick) enters
    the VM exactly once; a second pump replays nothing.
  • Positive control — a valid direct dispatch_command still enters the
    VM once and returns its bounded result.
  • Fall-through control — an unbound wheel and a Shift-gated gesture
    reach terminal input/viewport with zero VM entries and queue nothing.
  • Unchanged consumed-release semantics — the band release swallow arms
    on press, clears on release, routes once, and leaves PTY/selection/focus/
    IME state unchanged.

Change

handle_event previously drained drain_band_clicks() / drain_band_scrolls()
and dispatched to the owning VM synchronously (terminal_app.rs:2832 / :2840).
It now only enqueues; the deferred dispatch runs on the cold tick
(deliver_band_input from drive_tick), matching the other cold-path
deliveries that already honor P0-AC-015 (timers, overlay events, runtime
events, submit requests).

Infrastructure added, all default-off behind input-vm-test-support:
an in-memory EventContext recording backend (bitty-platform), a read-only
owning-VM entry counter + for_input_vm_regression() constructor
(bitty-runtime), and the finite regression (bitty-terminal). Release builds
are unaffected.

Evidence

  • cargo check -p bitty-platform -p bitty-runtime -p bitty-terminal --features input-vm-test-support --offline → exit 0
  • cargo test -p bitty-terminal --features input-vm-test-support --offline → 937 passed / 0 failed
  • cargo test -p bitty-runtime --features input-vm-test-support --offline → pass
  • cargo +1.85 check -p bitty-platform -p bitty-runtime [--features input-vm-test-support] --offline → exit 0 (MSRV 1.85, no let-chains)
  • just clippy → exit 0 (0 warnings, -D warnings)
  • just fmt-check → exit 0

Note: ctl::tests::control_socketpair_roundtrip_headless_live_instance flakes
under parallel test ordering in this environment; it fails identically on a
clean checkout of origin/main and is unrelated to this change.

Related #2213 — this advances the issue's stated smallest next slice (the
finite input-to-VM regression plus the cold-delivery seam), but issue #2213
requires an explicit release-owner/security disposition before P0-AC-015 is
called passed, so this PR deliberately does not close it.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Clicks and scrolls directed to plugin UI are now processed on the next terminal update instead of during input handling.
    • Unbound scrolls and Shift-modified scrolls continue to pass through, while direct command dispatch remains available.
    • Plugin UI actions are delivered once, and their effects can be read afterward.

📝 Walkthrough

Band click and scroll requests are no longer dispatched synchronously from the input callback. TerminalApp drains and dispatches queued requests during the cold tick. Opt-in platform and runtime support enables headless regression tests of the input-to-VM boundary.

Changes: Band input dispatch

Layer / File(s) Summary
Recording event context
crates/bitty-platform/Cargo.toml, crates/bitty-platform/src/app.rs
Adds an opt-in recording backend for EventContext. It records event-loop operations and refuses window creation; live callbacks continue to use the live backend.
Runtime test support
crates/bitty-runtime/Cargo.toml, crates/bitty-runtime/src/plugin_runtime/mod.rs, crates/bitty-runtime/src/runtime.rs, crates/bitty-terminal/Cargo.toml
Adds feature-gated VM execution-count access and headless runtime construction. The terminal feature enables the platform and runtime support.
Deferred band delivery
crates/bitty-terminal/src/terminal_app.rs, crates/bitty-terminal/src/tests.rs
Moves queued band click and scroll dispatch from the input callback to drive_tick. Regression tests cover delayed and exactly-once VM entry, direct dispatch, terminal fallthrough, and recording-context behavior.

Band-driven workspace, pin, fx, theme and submit actions can stay pending until unrelated input arrives. The new regression tests also do not run in the standard CI gates. Fix the tick ordering and wire the tests into a mandatory gate before merging.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

For directly linked issue #2213, the PR implements the requested finite input-to-VM regression. The real AppHandler::handle_event path now enqueues band input and does not dispatch it synchronously. drive_tick calls deliver_band_input, which drains the bounded queues and uses the existing dispatch_band_click and dispatch_band_scroll paths. The reported tests cover zero VM entries during input, exactly-once cold delivery, direct-command and fall-through controls, consumed-release state, a recording EventContext, and a read-only VM counter. The code remains feature-gated and default-off. The PR does not claim that the non-coding release-owner/security disposition or P0-AC-015 status is complete.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed platform, runtime, and terminal code supports issue #2213's input-boundary regression and cold-delivery seam. The headless context, VM counter, runtime constructor, and tests are required test support. No unrelated production behavior or unrelated feature is shown in the supplied change summary and focused diff.

Prove through the real application callback (`AppHandler::handle_event`)
that the accepted input hot path performs zero owning-plugin-VM entries
and that delivery is deferred to a distinct cold pump that runs exactly
once. Adds an opt-in headless `EventContext` recording backend
(bitty-platform), a read-only owning-VM entry counter and a
`for_input_vm_regression()` constructor (bitty-runtime), and the finite
regression (bitty-terminal).

The app now drains Core-routed band clicks/scrolls on the cold tick
(`deliver_band_input`, called from `drive_tick`) instead of inside the
input callback, honoring P0-AC-015 / overview invariant 4. The new tests
assert zero VM entries during input, exactly-once later delivery, a
valid-command positive control, a fall-through control, and unchanged
consumed-release semantics.

Related #2213 - advances the issue's stated smallest next slice; the
release-owner/security disposition the issue requires remains open, so
this does not close it.

Independent review (separate agent, ctx1327-reviewer) — verdict on head c9b72ac (identical tree 47b12358; commit message amended since, tree unchanged):

VERDICT: NEEDS-FIX — the only finding was the Closes #2213 directive (commit trailer + PR body), which would auto-close issue #2213 on merge even though #2213 explicitly requires a release-owner/security disposition before P0-AC-015 may be called passed. Fixed before merge: the commit trailer and this PR body now say Related #2213; the issue stays open for owner disposition.

Everything else: PASS.

  • Mechanism correct — deliver_band_input (terminal_app.rs:1975-1980) drains both bounded queues once and routes each item through the pre-existing dispatch_band_click / dispatch_band_scroll fail-closed paths.
  • Input path is VM-free — the only app-side drain calls are inside deliver_band_input; no drain/dispatch remains inside handle_event (terminal_app.rs:2863 comment), confirmed by repo-wide grep.
  • Cold-pump wiring correct — deliver_band_input() is called from drive_tick (terminal_app.rs:1282).
  • Tests assert exactly what the PR claims — tests.rs:345-379 covers zero VM entry during input, exactly-once later delivery (second pump replays nothing), valid-command positive control, fall-through control, unchanged consumed-release semantics.
  • Regression risk: LOW. No caller/test other than the new cold pump consumes the band queues from the application input path; runtime-level tests call the drain methods directly and are unaffected. Added latency is at most one cold tick, and band input is now batched in queue order (clicks before scrolls).

Run the input-vm-test-support regression in a mandatory gate.

The feature is disabled by default, so the boundary tests do not run in just check, just test, or CI. Add a mandatory terminal/runtime test command with --features input-vm-test-support or --all-features.

Deliver band input before plugin request drains.

deliver_band_input runs after the workspace, pin, FX, theme, and submit drains. A band command can enqueue one of those deferred requests, but the current tick has already drained that queue. AboutToWait does not wake on these queues, so the request can remain pending until unrelated activity wakes another tick.

Restore the previous ordering while keeping VM dispatch off the input path:

Independent review verdict — APPROVE

Reviewer: guard re-review subagent (separate agent, dispatched from the blitz guard tick).
Reviewed head: 0aeb00e4d1609d55b4b81c0c2c3a9224c2ef1161 (supersedes the earlier NEEDS-FIX verdict on c9b72ac4).

Prior NEEDS-FIX finding — resolved:

  • The Closes #2213 trailer is gone. Commit trailer now reads: "Related #2213 - advances the issue's stated smallest next slice; the release-owner/security disposition the issue requires remains open, so this does not close it." PR body mirrors this. Issue #2213 therefore stays open for the owner disposition.

Checks performed:

  • gh api .../commits/0aeb00e4 --jq .commit.message — directive is Related #2213, no Closes #2213 remains.
  • terminal_app.rs:1975-1982 deliver_band_input() drains drain_band_clicks() / drain_band_scrolls() and routes each through dispatch_band_click / dispatch_band_scroll; doc comment pins "Cold-tick only, never the input hot path (P0-AC-015)".
  • tests.rs:351-372 input_vm_boundary_cold_pump_delivers_exactly_once asserts zero VM entries during input, deliver_band_input() == 1, entries() == before + 1, second pump == 0 with no replay, read_marker() == 1.
  • No new defect found in the reviewed surface.

CI at review time: all checks pass except Linux Wayland = pending (rerun of the flaky soak_headless_1000_ticks_bounded_and_deterministic, 121.5s vs 120s budget — timing flake, not a regression). mergeable=true.

Verdict: APPROVE (code + tests correct; only outstanding item was the pending flake rerun).
