Closes #2221

What

Fixes the ghost/dead-view teardown family reported by the owner:

  1. Closing a tiled host while a detached float survives left a session-less, focused leaf: it painted a cursor ghost in the vacated region and silently swallowed input until ctrl+tab.
  2. Closing the last live view then re-homed focus/primary ownership onto that dead leaf, producing a blank shell-less view.
  3. Typing exit in the surviving float (the owner's actual report) discarded it without pruning the emptied workspace, leaving a blank dead slot.

Changes

  • chrome_keys.rs: when a float survives, tear down the host session, remove the leaf, and hand focus to the float; prune the emptied workspace when the last float is discarded.
  • workspaces.rs: discard_floated focuses a live float instead of clearing focus when the tiled base is empty; remove_workspace forces a full redraw after installing the surviving slot.
  • terminal_app.rs: reap_exited_shells prunes the emptied workspace after the last float's shell exits.
  • tests.rs: regression coverage for all three gestures; mutation-proven against reverted hunks.

Verification

  • cargo fmt --all -- --check PASS
  • clippy -D warnings -p bitty-terminal -p bitty-runtime --all-targets PASS
  • nextest -p bitty-terminal 1189/1189; cargo test 936/936 unit
  • just ci-local PASS on e10acb59 (log sha256 915bc0178ab4732c1fa4bf8a71ad12d659c44851149f11a67e20d8512eb803b6)
  • Headed on Workspace 5, isolated config: host close leaves no ghost and typing works immediately; last view close exits; float exit prunes the workspace with a live survivor; desktop restored.

Non-goals

Pinned-panel sibling (#2222) and new_panel no-op (#2223) are tracked separately. No terminal-truth, parser, or plugin-phase changes.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Focus now moves to a remaining floating view when the tiled area is empty, keeping that view available for input.
    • Closing the last tiled panel no longer disrupts other open floating views.
    • Empty workspaces are closed when their final view is removed, provided another workspace remains.
    • Closing the last floating view no longer creates an unexpected replacement panel.

📝 Walkthrough

Closing tiled views or detached floats now updates focus and workspace state. Regression tests cover repainting, input routing, and cleanup when the final float closes or exits.

Changes: Detached Float Teardown

Layer / File(s) Summary
Tiled host closure and float focus
crates/bitty-runtime/src/runtime/workspaces.rs, crates/bitty-terminal/src/chrome_keys.rs, crates/bitty-terminal/src/tests.rs
When the tiled layout has no leaves, discarding a focused float focuses the last remaining float. Closing the last tiled panel removes its leaf and focuses a surviving float. Tests check repainting and input routing.
Final float closure and workspace removal
crates/bitty-terminal/src/chrome_keys.rs, crates/bitty-runtime/src/runtime/workspaces.rs, crates/bitty-terminal/src/tests.rs
Closing the only float in an empty tiled workspace attempts to close that workspace when another workspace exists. Workspace removal requests a full redraw. Tests cover final-float closure and workspace pruning.
Cleanup after a float exits
crates/bitty-terminal/src/terminal_app.rs, crates/bitty-terminal/src/tests.rs
When an exited float leaves the active workspace without leaves or floats, the app closes that workspace if another exists. Tests check focus and primary ownership.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title clearly identifies the main changes: removing the ghost host leaf and pruning an emptied workspace during float teardown. It includes the relevant issue and change context without being misleading.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The directly linked issue is #2221. The supplied PR evidence reports host teardown that removes the dead tiled leaf, focuses the surviving float, and preserves input routing. It reports workspace pruning when the last float closes or its shell exits. The regression tests cover host teardown with a surviving float, last-live-float closure, float-only workspace pruning, and focus on surviving floats. These changes address the coding requirements for stale-region teardown, keyboard routing, dead-view prevention, and the single-panel float path. Headed verification and independent review are non-coding acceptance activities and do not change this coding assessment.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The reported changes stay within #2221. Changes in chrome teardown, workspace focus and redraw, exited-shell workspace pruning, and related regression tests directly support the required teardown behavior. The PR also preserves the stated non-goals for terminal truth, parsing, plugin execution phase, and release actions. No unrelated change is established by the supplied scope evidence.

Handle float-only workspaces during session persistence.

When the last tiled leaf is removed, capture_session_snapshot records an empty layout while storing the float separately. validate_snapshot rejects that workspace with SessionError::Corrupt("empty workspace"). Therefore save_session_on_exit only warns and does not persist the session.

Define how a float-only workspace is represented during save and restore before relying on this teardown state.

Handle the empty tiled layout in panel creation.

After CloseView removes the last tiled leaf, the surviving float remains focused, but it is not part of the tiled layout. NewPanel and NewSplit then pass that float ID to split_focused_leaf, which returns false because the empty layout has no matching leaf. The action therefore creates no panel. Add a fresh-panel path for an empty tiled layout. This requires a separate change from float-only session persistence.

Prune the owning workspace after an inactive float exits.

When the user switches workspaces before the float shell exits, reap_exited_shells can remove the float through remove_stashed_view(view). That path discards the float from its inactive slot but does not prune the slot when it has no layout leaves or floats. The active-workspace cleanup does not run, so the last float can leave an empty, dead workspace.

Make stashed-float removal identify its owning workspace, then apply the same empty-workspace pruning to that workspace. Do not use active_workspace_index() for this path.

Update the `remove_stashed_view` path used by `reap_exited_shells` to identify
the workspace that owns the stashed float, then prune that workspace when it has
no layout leaves or remaining floats and other workspaces remain. Do not use
`active_workspace_index()` for this cleanup; preserve the existing
single-workspace behavior.

Guard tick — CI forensics on Windows check and test (NEEDS-FIX, not a flake)

Run: https://github.com/bitty-terminal/bitty/actions/runs/39144233360/job/117724692240

Windows check and test fails at compile, not at a test:

error: function `probe_rgba` is never used
error: could not compile `bitty-terminal` (bin "bitty" test) due to 1 previous error

Root cause: crates/bitty-terminal/src/tests.rs:9718 defines probe_rgba
unconditionally, but its only caller is
close_host_with_detached_float_leaves_no_ghost_or_dead_input_issue_2221
(tests.rs:9624), which is gated #[cfg(unix)] (tests.rs:9555). On Windows the
helper therefore has no consumer and deny(warnings) promotes dead-code to a hard
error.

One-line remedy — gate the helper to match its sole consumer:

#[cfg(unix)]
fn probe_rgba(rgba: &[u8], width: usize, x: usize, y: usize) -> [u8; 4] {

(grep -n probe_rgba crates/bitty-terminal/src/tests.rs → only the definition and
this one call site, so #[cfg(unix)] is sufficient; no other platform path uses it.)

This is a genuine defect on the PR head e10acb59, not the known m1_shell_coverage
pwsh flake — do not rerun --failed. Apply the gate, push, and the run should pass.
