Priority: P2 | Area: area:ui | Labels: feat,P2,area:ui | Milestone: v0.1.0 | RFC: panel animation / RFC-0002 | Task: CTX-1335

Closes #2113

What

Paint-only interpolation of panel geometry across animation ticks for split/zoom/workspace moves and drag/resize, with first-class instant and reduced-motion paths.

Design

  • Logical layout, hit-testing, PTY size, and terminal truth stay final; only the painted frame interpolates.
  • Retargeting continues from in-flight painted bounds; same-kind ring slots are reused deterministically.
  • Float tier changes (detach/restore) cancel any in-flight bounds tween so the opaque cover cannot own an obsolete rect.
  • Non-animating-kind and capacity-refusal paths cancel stale different-kind tweens; move/resize attaches to an in-flight drag entry (one budget entry, one ring factor).
  • Pins are excluded from workspace slides.
  • Instant, disabled, reduced-motion, safe-mode, zero-duration, and capacity-overflow paint committed end bounds on the first frame.

Verification

  • fmt, clippy -D warnings (bitty-runtime/bitty-ui, all targets), Windows GNU workspace all-targets: pass
  • cargo nextest run -p bitty-runtime --locked: 2,517 passed, 1 skipped
  • Mutation: forcing instant fails an interpolation assertion; removing tier-change cancel reproduces the old bleed rects
  • Rebased on 0fea5114

Non-goals / follow-ups

Fixed-size (CTX-1088) paint metadata on PresentFrame is recorded as a precise follow-up; no docs edited. CTX-1332 must rebase on this additive present.rs change.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Panel moves and resizes can now animate smoothly, including changes to both the panel frame and its content area.
    • Workspace switches can slide incoming non-pinned panels in the direction of travel; pinned panels stay anchored.
    • Animations affect painted appearance while committed layout and hit-testing geometry remain unchanged until the transition completes. Animation policies and capacity limits are respected.

Rework #2113 after independent review NEEDS-FIX.

- F1: a float detach/restore tier change now cancels the surface's
in-flight bounds tween before painting, so the float cover and
occluders always own the committed rectangle on the first present.
- F2: non-animating-kind and shared-capacity refusal paths cancel the
stale different-kind tween instead of leaving it painting the old end.
- F3: per-view move/resize bounds attach to an in-flight Alt+drag ring
entry, so one surface keeps one budget entry and one ring alpha factor.
- F4: add animator coverage for slot reuse, overflow drop, replacement,
cancellation, and runtime coverage for retargeting, capacity refusal,
and detach/restore. F5 excludes window-global pins from the workspace
slide, F7 gates eviction on the duration, F8 makes the geometry gate
causal instead of global. F6 (fixed-size painted dims) remains a
recorded follow-up; it is cosmetic and needs fixed-dims paint metadata.

Paint-only boundary unchanged: layout, hit-testing, PTY size, and
terminal truth read the committed logical frames.

📝 Walkthrough

The runtime now interpolates panel frame and content bounds for painting. Logical frames, hit geometry, terminal sizing, and committed allocations remain separate from the interpolated presentation geometry.

Changes: Panel Geometry Interpolation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Bounds animation contract
crates/bitty-runtime/src/runtime/animations.rs, crates/bitty-runtime/src/runtime.rs
Adds PanelBounds interpolation and translation, and extends PanelAnimator to manage bounds transitions alongside ring animations.
Runtime transition admission and frames
crates/bitty-runtime/src/runtime/layout_focus.rs, crates/bitty-runtime/tests/panel_animations.rs
Adds shared-capacity admission and paint-frame interpolation for eligible geometry changes. Tests cover animation policies, workspace changes, gestures, float tier changes, and capacity limits.
Painted allocation rendering
crates/bitty-runtime/src/runtime/present.rs, crates/bitty-runtime/tests/panel_animations.rs
Uses optional interpolated allocations for leaf primitives, overlays, and Kitty image placement. Committed allocations remain the fallback.

The new panel-geometry animation can visibly stutter during continuous Alt+drag or float resize. When many animations run at once, a focus fade can cut off an in-progress drag highlight. Both issues are cosmetic: layout, input, and terminal sizing are unaffected. The change is mergeable, but both fixes are small and worth making first.

Explanation

The changes implement [#2113] panel-geometry interpolation for split, zoom, and workspace transitions. PanelAnimator adds bounds interpolation, retargeting, cancellation, and shared-capacity handling in crates/bitty-runtime/src/runtime/animations.rs. Runtime::paint_frames_at applies paint-only frame and content interpolation while preserving committed logical geometry in crates/bitty-runtime/src/runtime/layout_focus.rs and present.rs. Tests cover split bounds, workspace slides, instant and reduced-motion policies, capacity refusal, retargeting, and pinned overlays in crates/bitty-runtime/tests/panel_animations.rs. The headed proof request is a non-coding verification task, so it does not add a coding failure.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within panel-geometry animation scope. Drag/resize retargeting, float-tier cancellation, pinned-overlay handling, budget admission, and presentation allocation support are directly related to safe paint-only interpolation. The added tests validate these behaviors. No unrelated change is demonstrated by the reviewed summary.

The `bounds` test helper derived content as `w - 4`/`h - 4`, which
underflows for the degenerate `bounds(0, 0, 0, 0)` fixture. Local runs
without overflow checks missed it; the CI profile panicked at
animations.rs:928. Make the inset saturating so empty rectangles stay
valid and the empty/degenerate intent is unchanged.

Carry the painted bounds forward when a gesture re-arms the ring.

update_alt_drag_at calls trigger_animation(AnimationKind::Drag, Some(drag.leaf), now) for each changed motion. PanelAnimator::trigger removes the existing bounds entry and creates a ring entry with bounds: None. Before the next present, detect_panel_animations then starts from the last committed frame instead of the painted frame. Continuous Alt+drag can therefore snap on each update.

The same path applies to repeated float-resize updates. The tiled reparent Move trigger runs on drop, not on each motion.

Carry the active painted bounds into the replacement entry for Move, Resize, and Drag. Keep Close behavior unchanged.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Drop only bounds-only entries here.

position(|a| a.bounds.is_some()) can select a ring entry that also hosts bounds. Examples are a Move ring that reused its slot, or the Alt+drag Drag entry. remove then deletes that accepted ring fade completely. This contradicts the doc comment, which says ring transitions keep priority at MAX_CONCURRENT_ANIMATIONS. When the shared budget is full, a focus fade can therefore cancel an in-progress drag ring. Clearing bounds on a ring entry would not free a slot, so restrict the eviction to !ring entries. If no such entry exists, return false. The caller then refuses the trigger, which matches the behavior before this change.

Independent review verdict — APPROVE (separate agent: ctx-1335b-reviewer; guard tick 2026-10-19 05:29 CST)

Reviewed at commit 3ec20bedbb37428e1e4031094cca669269b6bcf9.

  • Scope: paint-only PanelBounds interpolation. Committed start/end bounds snapshots are captured per animation trigger; the paint path calls interpolated_bounds() to lerp frame+content over the existing duration/easing on the virtual-clock seam. Logical layout, PTY size, grid, cursor, scrollback and hit-testing always observe the committed end state; instant/reduced-motion paint the end state immediately.
  • Invariant (endpoints exact / monotone / instant+reduced bypass) — enforced: lerp_axis computes from + (to-from)*p in f64 then .round(), so p=0/p=1 return the endpoints exactly; mapping is monotone; p.clamp(0,1) plus NaN→0.0 prevent extrapolation; reduced/instant bypass enforced in AnimationPolicy::duration (ZERO) with trigger returning false on zero duration.
  • Underflow fix present: the endpoint bounds helper that previously used w-4/h-4 on a 0x0 rect now uses saturating_sub/saturating_add; lerp_rect clamps width/height at 0 and saturates casts.
  • Tests load-bearing: panel_bounds_interpolation_is_exact_at_endpoints_and_monotone asserts exact endpoint equality, exact rounded midpoints (x=30,y=30,w=150,h=90), clamp at -1.0/2.0, NaN→from, and shrink-to-0; dropping round, swapping from/to, or removing the clamp falsifies these equalities.
  • Defects found: none.
  • Caveat: the reviewer's isolated cargo nextest build exceeded the 420s ceiling, so the green state is confirmed by the remote CI on 3ec20bed (Quality gates 1/2, Linux X11/Wayland, Windows, macOS, MSRV 1.85 all passing), not re-observed locally.

CodeRabbit PR #2231 findings 1 and 2:

- Carry the painted frame forward when a gesture (Move/Resize/Drag)
re-arms its ring, so the next present retargets from the currently
painted bounds instead of snapping back to the last committed target.
Close keeps its existing bounds-drop behavior.
- Evict only bounds-only entries in `drop_one_bounds`; a ring entry that
hosts bounds (a reused Move slot or the Alt-drag Drag entry) keeps its
accepted fade. With no bounds-only entry the trigger is refused, which
  matches the documented ring priority.

Adds a consecutive Alt-drag continuity regression and a full-budget
ring-priority test.
