To participate in the workshop, you'll have to install some software on your computer and smartphone prior to the workshop. It'll probably take about an half hour to get everything set up.
These instructions cover installation for Mac OS.
If you have any issues with this, don't hesitate to contact David Riordan, Rosalie Yu, or Michael Krisch for assistance.
This tutorial will walk you through the installation of the following pieces of software:
- RICOH THETA desktop app - RICOH THETA is a camera that shoots everything in 360 degrees. A spherical image or movie can be easily taken in one shot. The camera can be freely moved and viewed 360 degrees, and edited and shared. With the Ricoh Theta desktop app you can view, convert, and share your footage.
- RICOH THETA smartphone app - You can use the Theta smartphone app to shoot, view and share images from your smartphone.
- GoPro VR player - GoPro VR Player is a 360-degree video & photo player for desktop computers: watch 360° videos locally with professional playback features.
- Youtube 360 Video Metadata app - YouTube supports uploading and playback of 360° spherical videos. This app will add the necessary metadata into a file to enable upload and playback a 360° video file.
- Youtube app - YouTube app enables on-the-go HD videos and live streams.
- NYT VR app - Virtual reality stories from the NYTimes.
- The Guardian 6x9 app - A virtual experience of solitary confinement.
- Adobe Premiere - Adobe Premiere is a timeline-based video editing software application. Premiere is a paid application, although a free 1-week trial is available through Adobe. Adobe Premiere is installed on the Journalism School's lab computers, so you can use what you learned even without buying Premiere for your laptop. Prior to the workshop, please sign-up for the 1-week trial. Don't worry if you have already completed a 1-week trial with the Adobe Suite, you can edit with other students in your group on one machine.
