The Problem

Interactive 3D on the web often feels like a gimmick—fancy visuals disconnected from real utility or clear design principles. Developers build spinning 3D cubes or particle fields that look cool for 5 seconds but communicate nothing meaningful about frontend engineering depth or interactive techniques.

Grove was created to bridge this gap: a spatial presentation where every 3D object and camera milestone is a working demo of a fundamental web design pattern.

What It Does

Grove guides the user along a winding 3D pathway through a stylized procedural garden across 7 interactive stations:

  1. Station 1 — Spatial Camera Pathing: Smooth scroll-linked spline camera movements.
  2. Station 2 — Shader Foliage: Custom vertex shaders driving organic wind animation.
  3. Station 3 — Dynamic Lighting & Shadows: Real-time directional sunlight and ambient occlusion maps.
  4. Station 4 — Interactive Physics: Rigid-body collision on hover and drag elements.
  5. Station 5 — Post-Processing Optics: Depth-of-field focus and chromatic aberration.
  6. Station 6 — Audio Synthesis: Web Audio API ambient reactive soundscapes.
  7. Station 7 — Responsive Performance: Dynamic Level-of-Detail (LOD) degradation for mobile hardware.

How It's Built

Grove uses React Three Fiber (@react-three/fiber), Three.js, and GSAP ScrollTrigger for camera timeline control.

  • Spline Curves: Camera path is computed along 3D Catmull-Rom splines synchronized with scroll displacement.
  • Custom GLSL Shaders: Procedural leaf movement and wind ripples computed in GPU vertex shaders.
  • Adaptive Level-of-Detail: Geometry resolution scales dynamically based on measured device frame rates.

Decisions & Tradeoffs

  1. Scroll-Driven Camera over Orbit Controls: Unrestricted camera navigation confuses users; guided pathing ensures narrative flow while retaining 3D perspective.
  2. Procedural Vegetation over Heavy Models: Procedural GLSL geometries reduced initial 3D model asset bundle size by over 80%.
  3. Graceful Fallbacks for Low-End GPUs: Disables post-processing depth-of-field automatically on mobile chipsets to guarantee 60fps.

What's Next

  • Expanding seasonal weather triggers (rain particle systems and snow accumulation).
  • Adding spatial spatialized 3D audio positional nodes.
