Summary

This follows up the review of #1202, which fixed the EQL SQLx suite by reading SteVec selectors from the fixtures instead of hardcoding them. EQL (Encrypt Query Language) is the SQL library this repo installs into customers' Postgres databases. A SteVec selector is the hash that identifies a JSON path inside an encrypted JSON document.

#1202 merged with only its blocking finding fixed, so CI could recover. This PR handles the rest:

  • ties the selector pin to the cipherstash-client version customers actually run;
  • makes the jsonb_entry test matrix query the same SQL customers write;
  • tightens the $.hello selector rule;
  • closes gaps in the guard that stops selectors being hardcoded again.

Changes

Version parity (Codex P2 on #1202; review item 1)

  • Both EQL workspace cipherstash-client pins move from =0.42.0 to =0.42.3, the version protect-ffi ships. The Cargo.lock change also moves cipherstash-core, cts-common and the registry copies of stack-auth and stack-profile to 0.42.3, matching protect-ffi's lockfile.
  • New scripts/__tests__/cipherstash-client-parity.test.mjs fails when the two lockfiles resolve different versions. It runs in pnpm run test:scripts on every PR, so a protect-ffi-only bump is caught even though test-eql.yml doesn't start for it.
  • The bump changes no pinned selector or op term: the pin passed unchanged before and after.

Matrix queries the literal selector (review items 4, 5 and 6)

  • ScalarType::column_expr is now async and resolved per test from the pool. The default is payload.
  • JsonbEntryInteger resolves the selector with field_op_selector and embeds the literal payload -> '<sel>'::text, through a pure helper entry_column_expr. Before, it embedded a subquery that customers never write, which would also give an EXPLAIN a different plan.
  • All 13 call sites in src/matrix.rs, plus fetch_fixture_payload, resolve right after the spec is built. Tests that load no fixture never resolve.
  • field_op_selector_subquery, its copy of the candidate query, and ScalarDomainSpec.column_expr are removed.
  • New tests that need no database check the literal format, including a selector containing a quote. They also check that JsonbEntryInteger really queries the fixture: it fails against an unreachable pool, while the default succeeds. The live uniqueness test now also asserts that column_expr equals the helper's output.

$.hello rule matches its documentation (review item 8)

  • is_hello_op now requires all four of:
    • the selector on every row;
    • exactly two op lengths;
    • those lengths one character apart (16 hex characters; op length is 16 × bytes + 20, checked against cipherstash-client and cllw-ore);
    • the longer length on exactly one row (the 9/1 split).
  • The candidate SQL gains rows_at_max_op_length. I ran it on a scratch Postgres 14: $.hello is 2/132/148/1, $.accented 3/84/196/1, $.number 1/132/132/10.
  • Two new unit tests reject a two-length leaf that isn't the one-character split, and show each new clause is needed on its own.

Literal guard (review items 2 and 3; cipherstash-bot optional item)

  • A selector after a string escape (\n, \t, \r, \0, \x, …) or a 0x prefix is now caught. So is uppercase or mixed-case hex; distinct digits are counted case-insensitively.
  • The guard still scans only .rs files under src/ and tests/. The README, the module doc and AGENTS.md now say so, and that the generated fixtures/*.sql files, which are gitignored and hold real selectors, aren't scanned.
  • threshold_is_eight_distinct_digits pins the threshold. Setting MIN_DISTINCT_DIGITS to 7, 9 or 16 fails it.

Clean-up (review item 10)

  • Removes v3_jsonb_hello_op_selector_is_unique, which re-checked what hello_op_selector already enforces, and its line in snapshots/v3_jsonb_tests.txt.
  • AGENTS.md's "Working on EQL" SteVec bullet describes the new state.

Verification

  • cargo fmt --all --check is clean.
  • cargo clippy --locked -p eql-bindings -p eql-encryption-tests --all-features --all-targets -- -D warnings and cargo clippy --locked -p eql_tests --tests -- -D warnings are clean.
  • cargo test --locked -p eql-encryption-tests: all pass. The pin is unchanged under 0.42.3.
  • cargo test --locked -p eql_tests --lib: 144 pass, 2 fail. The 2 are the existing fixtures::driver tests that need DATABASE_URL, and they fail the same way on main.
  • The literal guard passes 10 of 10. Its new tests failed before the fix: an escape left it reporting nothing. payload_schema_tests passes 32 of 32.
  • The $.hello rule's new test failed before the fix: it picked $.accented.
  • The parity test failed before the bump (0.42.0 vs 0.42.3) and passes after.
  • pnpm exec vitest run --config scripts/vitest.config.mjs: 76 files, 1354 tests. pnpm run code:check: 0 errors.
  • Not run locally: the live SQLx suite, because it needs generated fixtures and credentials. This PR's Test EQL shards are the first run of the runtime-resolved matrix.

Review notes

  • Known gap: the three snapshots/*_expanded.rs macro snapshots aren't regenerated, so the nightly, non-blocking macro-expand-eql.yml will fail until someone runs mise run test:matrix:expand from packages/eql. That needs nightly-2026-05-01 and cargo-expand, which didn't fit on the authoring machine's disk. It can be pushed to this branch before merge.
  • Refuted, no change: the claim that a unit-test predicate in ste_vec_selector.rs copies is_hello_op. The real rule has its own tests, and mutating it fails them.
  • Start with src/scalar_domains.rs (the ScalarType::column_expr signature) and src/fixtures/v3_ste_vec.rs (is_hello_op).
  • No changeset: test-only and docs.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Expanded selector checks to recognize standalone values across Rust code and embedded SQL or JSON, including uppercase and escaped forms.
    • Improved coverage for identifying selectors in encrypted JSONB fixtures and validating generated SQL expressions.
    • Added an automated check to keep client versions consistent across components.
  • Chores
    • Updated test environments to use the same client version.

Version parity. Both EQL workspace cipherstash-client pins move from
=0.42.0 to =0.42.3, the version protect-ffi ships, and
scripts/__tests__/cipherstash-client-parity.test.mjs fails whenever the
two lockfiles resolve different versions. It runs in test:scripts on
every PR, so a protect-ffi-only bump is caught even though test-eql.yml
does not start for it. The bump changes no pinned selector or op term.

The jsonb_entry matrix queries what customers write. ScalarType's
column_expr is now async and resolved per test from the pool, so
JsonbEntryInteger's statements embed the literal payload -> '<sel>'::text
instead of a subquery, and a broken fixture fails with pick_one's
candidate list. field_op_selector_subquery, its duplicate of the
candidate query, and ScalarDomainSpec.column_expr are gone.

The $.hello rule matches its documentation: the two op lengths must be
one character apart (16 hex: op length is 16 * bytes + 20) and split
9/1 across rows, so a fixture edit cannot make it pick another leaf.

selector_literal_guard catches a selector after a string escape (\n,
\x, ...) or a 0x prefix, and in any case, and its threshold is pinned
by a test. Its docs now say it scans .rs files only.

Also: a redundant hello-selector test is removed, and AGENTS.md
describes the new state.

The *_expanded.rs macro snapshots are not regenerated here: that needs
mise run test:matrix:expand on a pinned nightly. Only the non-blocking
nightly macro-expand-eql.yml checks them.

📝 Walkthrough

The changes update EQL SQLx selector checks, SteVec fixture selection rules, and fixture-backed scalar column expressions. They also align EQL test pins for cipherstash-client and add a lockfile parity check against protect-ffi.

Changes: EQL SQLx test updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Selector literal scanning
AGENTS.md, packages/eql/tests/sqlx/README.md, packages/eql/tests/sqlx/tests/selector_literal_guard.rs
The guard scans Rust files under src/ and tests/ for standalone 32-hex values in any case. It recognizes supported escape and 0x boundaries. Documentation states that generated SQL fixtures are excluded.
Client version pins and parity
AGENTS.md, packages/eql/tests/encryption/Cargo.toml, packages/eql/tests/encryption/tests/ste_vec_selectors.rs, packages/eql/tests/sqlx/Cargo.toml, scripts/__tests__/cipherstash-client-parity.test.mjs
Both EQL test crates pin cipherstash-client to 0.42.3. The new test checks that EQL and protect-ffi lockfiles each resolve one matching version and that the versions agree.
SteVec selector profile
packages/eql/tests/sqlx/src/fixtures/ste_vec_selector.rs, packages/eql/tests/sqlx/src/fixtures/v3_ste_vec.rs, packages/eql/tests/sqlx/src/fixtures/v3_doc_integer.rs, packages/eql/tests/sqlx/snapshots/v3_jsonb_tests.txt, packages/eql/tests/sqlx/tests/v3_jsonb_tests.rs
The fixture query counts rows at the maximum op length for each selector. The $.hello rule requires all rows, two op lengths separated by 16 hex characters, and one row at the maximum. The fixture-backed uniqueness test and selector subquery helper are removed.
Pool-resolved fixture column expressions
packages/eql/tests/sqlx/src/scalar_domains.rs, packages/eql/tests/sqlx/src/jsonb_entry.rs, packages/eql/tests/sqlx/src/matrix.rs, packages/eql/tests/sqlx/tests/encrypted_domain/jsonb_entry.rs
ScalarType::column_expr now resolves asynchronously with a pool and returns a result. JsonbEntryInteger builds a literal selector expression from its fixture, and matrix tests use the resolved expressions.

A suffixed selector literal can evade the test guard. The gap is narrow and does not block the SQLx changes, but it should be fixed or tracked.

Automated review attestation

Source: Claude Code /code-review medium followed by /cross-check-review-findings, run at head 12d239d. Automated review, not a human approval.

Critical / blocking: none.

Findings: none survived cross-check. No inline comments.

What I checked (full diff, 17 files):

  • ScalarType::column_expr is now async. All 13 matrix call sites resolve it after the spec is built. count_distinct_dispatch resolves it only after its early-return guard, so no fixture-less test touches the DB.
  • The entry_column_expr literal goes through sql_string_literal, so a quote in the selector stays quoted.
  • The candidate SQL's entries/longest CTEs and rows_at_max_op_length are well-formed. The new is_hello_op clauses match the unit-test profiles, and the $.accented 84/180 case is rejected.
  • The literal guard's left_bounded handles \n, \x, \\x, 0x, and the hex-letter escapes (\0, \b, \f) swallowed into a 33-char run via after_escape. No false-boundary path found.
  • The parity test reads both lockfiles with Node builtins only, and asserts exactly one entry per lock so it can't pass vacuously.
  • CI is green on this head: all 4 PG17 shards, the e2e property suite, matrix inventory, Rust crates, and ci-required.

Non-blocking note (already disclosed in the PR body): the three snapshots/*_expanded.rs macro snapshots aren't regenerated, so the nightly macro-expand-eql.yml will fail until mise run test:matrix:expand is run from packages/eql. Please push that to this branch before merge, or open a follow-up.

Process: no changeset is needed (test-only and docs), and no skills/* are affected.

P2 Badge Regenerate the matrix expansion snapshots

This changes the bodies emitted by the shared matrix macros, but the three committed *_expanded.rs snapshots were not regenerated and still reference the removed spec.column_expr field. The nightly macro-expand-eql.yml workflow regenerates these files and runs git diff --exit-code, so it will deterministically fail and the checked-in body-fidelity backstop no longer represents the macro source. Run mise run test:matrix:expand and commit all three outputs.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Recognize suffixed u128 selector literals.

If Rust source contains 0x<32 hex digits>u128, is_word(bytes[i]) rejects the run before the guard checks its length or digits. That valid integer form can therefore pin a selector without failing this test. Handle a Rust integer suffix after a 0x run, and add a suffixed case to flags_a_selector_right_after_a_string_escape.
