Summary

A Go struct tagged opaque is encrypted as one value in one column. Until now the Go SDK turned the struct into a JSON document before sealing it. This pull request seals it as a storage blob instead: Vitamin C's storage profile, version 1 (vcffi.MarshalStorage), a versioned format for bytes that are kept, which Go and Rust read alike. Rows sealed by earlier releases keep opening: a value that is not a blob is read as the JSON it used to be.

This is separate from the encrypted JSON documents (json_tree) work in the rest of the stack, as the plan asks: the storage profile is for opaque values only, and json_tree's encrypted nodes and EQL envelope are their own format.

Changes

  • encrypt/gensupport/codec.go: opaqueBytes writes the shape struct with vcffi.MarshalStorage and wraps its error (which names a type or kind, never a value); Opaque reads a value starting with the storage header (VCS) with vcffi.UnmarshalStorage and anything else with encoding/json. A blob of a later storage version is refused as such (vcffi.ErrUnsupportedVersion, wrapped in encrypt.ErrEncoding), never misread as JSON.
  • stashgen: the generated shape struct carries vc:"name, default" tags beside its json:"name" tags, so a field added later reads as its zero value from an older blob. Generated files name gensupport.GeneratedVersion2, so a file generated before (no vc tags) does not compile. A new check, notStorable, follows vcffi's rules: it refuses encrypt.Decimal and encrypt.Date (no storage form), a type with only one of MarshalText / UnmarshalText, a map key that is not an integer, string, bytes or text, and a struct with unexported fields (including one only MarshalJSON carries). The JSON check stays, because old rows are read as JSON.
  • encrypt.ErrStorageVersion names vcffi.ErrUnsupportedVersion, so a program can detect a blob from a later release without importing vitaminc's bindings.
  • Regenerated *_stash.go files and the stashgen golden file.
  • Tests: the gensupport unit test now checks the blob header, the read of a legacy JSON document, the refusal of a future storage version (as encrypt.ErrStorageVersion), a field added since a blob was sealed, and that NaN round-trips; TestAnOpaqueStructWithNoStorageFormIsErrEncoding (a non-UTF-8 string refuses the batch naming the value, holding none of it); TestEveryOpaqueFieldTypeRoundTrips expects empty slices and maps for the zero value; TestANonFiniteFloatInAnOpaqueStructIsErrEncoding becomes TestANonFiniteFloatInAnOpaqueStructRoundTrips; stashgen refusals for each refused shape, and TestOpaqueStructAcceptsEmptyStructs.
  • Docs: cmd/stashgen/README.md, encrypt/doc.go, the CHANGELOG (under Breaking).

Assumptions

  • Behaviour changes, listed under Breaking in the CHANGELOG: generated files must be regenerated; every reader must be upgraded before any writer (an earlier release cannot read a blob); NaN and infinite floats in an opaque struct now seal; a nil slice or map comes back empty, not nil, from a blob; Encrypt refuses a non-UTF-8 string and nesting past 128 levels; stashgen refuses the field shapes above. The module is pre-1.0 and a minor version may break.
  • No Go release while vcffi is a pseudo-version. The CHANGELOG says so; it is not enforced in scripts/go-release-version.mjs, because vcffi has only ever been pinned by pseudo-version (on next too), so a gate would block every release until vitaminc tags its Go bindings. That is the owner's call.
  • Reading old JSON rows is kept indefinitely, with no flag: the cost is one prefix check per value.
  • vcffi's errors are wrapped on both paths: they name a type, a kind or a position, never a value (checked against every unwritable message in vcffi).

Verification

On this branch, macOS arm64, Go 1.26.10, with the guests built from the branch below:

  • mise run go:test (gofmt, vet, every Go test against the embedded and deterministic guests, 386 vet): passed, after the review fixes too. mise run go:lint: 0 issues.
  • go test ./stashgen/ -run Golden -update, then go test ./stashgen/: passed; go generate ./... leaves no diff.
  • Not run: live tests against ZeroKMS (no credentials here). No Rust code changed in this pull request.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Opaque structs are now stored as a single versioned storage blob. Values stored as JSON by earlier releases remain readable.
    • NaN and infinity values round-trip; nil slices and maps decode as empty collections.
  • Compatibility

    • Regenerate generated files and upgrade readers before writing values in the new format; older releases cannot read these blobs.
    • Fields missing from blobs read as zero values.
  • Limitations

    • Opaque fields must be supported by both the storage format and JSON. Invalid UTF-8, nesting beyond 128 levels, and types such as decimals and dates are unsupported; stored decimal or date fields in opaque structs cannot be decrypted by this release.

An opaque struct is one column holding the whole struct. It crossed the
binding as the JSON document encoding/json wrote: bytes that are kept,
in a format nothing versions. vitaminc#520/#526 add the storage profile,
a versioned blob format for kept values that Go and Rust read alike, so
gensupport now writes the shape struct with vcffi.MarshalStorage.

Rows sealed by earlier releases still open: Opaque reads a value that
begins with the storage header ("VCS") as a blob and anything else as
the JSON it used to be. A blob of a later storage version is refused as
such (vcffi.ErrUnsupportedVersion), never misread as JSON.

The generated shape struct carries `vc` tags beside its `json` ones, and
stashgen checks a field against both formats: notStorable refuses a type
that writes itself only through MarshalJSON over a struct with
unexported fields (a blob would drop them) and a struct with no exported
field. The blob writes a float by its bits, so NaN and the infinities
now seal; a nil slice or map comes back empty. The CHANGELOG lists both
under Breaking.

This is kept apart from the JSON-tree work: the storage profile is for
opaque values, and json_tree's encrypted nodes and EQL envelope are a
separate, already frozen format.

Walkthrough

Opaque structs now use versioned VitaminC storage-profile blobs for writes. Generated files use version 2. Runtime decoding retains a JSON fallback for earlier values, and stashgen validates opaque fields against both formats.

- Generated files name gensupport.GeneratedVersion2: a file generated
before has no vc tags and would seal blobs keyed by Go field names that
a regenerated file cannot read, so it no longer compiles.
- The shape struct tags each field vc:"name, default", so a field added to
an opaque struct reads as its zero value from an older blob.
- stashgen's storage check follows vcffi's rules: encrypt.Decimal and
encrypt.Date (no storage form), a type with only one of MarshalText and
UnmarshalText, and a map key that is not an integer, string, bytes or
text are refused; an empty struct (map[string]struct{}) is accepted.
- opaqueBytes wraps vcffi's error, which names a type or kind and never a
  value; encrypt.ErrStorageVersion names vcffi.ErrUnsupportedVersion.
- The CHANGELOG says to upgrade readers before writers, lists the new
Encrypt-time refusals, and says no release while vcffi is a
  pseudo-version.

Review response (findings from the automated review above), fixed in 2cd83ea unless noted:

Finding Outcome
CHANGELOG.md:51: generated-file version not bumped Fixed: generated files name gensupport.GeneratedVersion2; a file generated before does not compile. All *_stash.go and goldens regenerated.
stashgen/emit.go:182: no ,default Fixed: vc:"name, default". Tested: a field added since a blob was sealed reads as its zero value. A field added to a nested struct type has no tag to carry; the CHANGELOG and README say to give it a pointer type.
stashgen/read.go:1113: encrypt.Decimal / encrypt.Date pass stashgen Fixed: refused (no storage form), with refusal tests; README updated.
CHANGELOG.md:50: older releases cannot read new rows Documented under Breaking: upgrade every reader before any writer. A read-both/write-JSON release first was not added; the module is pre-1.0.
stashgen/read.go:1145: struct{} refused Fixed: an empty struct is accepted (TestOpaqueStructAcceptsEmptyStructs); only unexported fields are refused.
stashgen/read.go:1121: MarshalText without UnmarshalText Fixed: either half alone is refused, with tests for both.
stashgen/read.go:1131: map keys unchecked Fixed: a key must be an integer, string, bytes or a text type, checked through MarshalJSON-only types too (test with a struct key).
CHANGELOG.md:52: Breaking list incomplete Fixed: non-UTF-8 strings, nesting past 128, keys whose MarshalText spells alike.
gensupport/codec.go:394: write error dropped Fixed: wrapped with %w. Every unwritable message in vcffi names a type, kind or position, never a value.
CHANGELOG.md:57: format from an unmerged PR Documented: no Go release while vcffi is a pseudo-version. Not enforced in go-release-version.mjs: vcffi has only ever been pinned by pseudo-version (on next too), so a gate would block every release until vitaminc tags its Go bindings. Left for the owner.
gensupport/codec.go:423: vcffi sentinel in the SDK contract Fixed: encrypt.ErrStorageVersion (the same error value), tested.
stashgen/read.go:1134: cleanup Partly: the counter is gone. The two walkers stay separate, because they check different codecs (JSON for old rows, the blob for new ones); each now states its codec's rules in full.
gensupport_internal_test.go:307: Encrypt-path test Fixed: TestAnOpaqueStructWithNoStorageFormIsErrEncoding (non-UTF-8 string: ErrEncoding wrapping vcffi.ErrUnwritable, names value 1, holds no byte of the value). A deep-tree case was not added.

Verified: mise run go:test passed, mise run go:lint 0 issues, go generate ./... leaves no diff.

Review attestation — automated code review (/code-review medium) with findings cross-checked (cross-check-review-findings) against head 2cd83ea and the PR's existing review feedback.

  • Critical / blocking: none.
  • Major (1): *time.Time and other pointers to text types are wrongly refused by the new textForm check (inline). Not raised in prior feedback; the earlier MarshalText-alone fix introduced it.
  • All 13 earlier review threads were checked; the ones still open are addressed at head, so nothing is repeated here.

@coderdan - I'm sure you're on top of the issue regarding storing data in a pre-release vitaminc data format, but I've left the agent findings in here to keep it explicit that there's a dependency on a pre-release.

The design is correct. Version 1 of the storage profile is the right format for kept bytes, and the change keeps old rows readable. Opaque reads a value that begins with VCS as a blob and every other value as the JSON that encoding/json wrote (an object, so it begins with {), so the two cannot be confused. A blob from a later storage version is refused as ErrStorageVersion and is never read as JSON. GeneratedVersion2 makes sure that no version 1 file writes blobs keyed by Go field names. notStorable follows vcffi's rules closely, the half-text-pair refusal is especially good, and each refusal has a test. The vc:"name, default" tags keep the "a field added later reads as zero" behaviour.

Two points need an answer:

  1. This PR writes data in a format that vitaminc has not shipped. It uses #1369's pin, c226edf. The final cipherstash/vitaminc#526 (3b8928f) changed the storage bytes after that commit. A pointer to a nil value or to a Some value is now marked at each level, and an unknown vc tag option is refused. The final #526 is not on vitaminc main either: it merged into the #520 branch after #520 had merged. A blob is meant to stay readable for as long as the row exists, so please do not merge this PR until #1369 pins the code that vitaminc will release.
  2. Existing rows with an encrypt.Date or encrypt.Decimal in an opaque struct cannot be decrypted after the upgrade. Before this PR, notJSONEncodable accepted both types. Each is a struct with only exported fields (vcvalue.Date{Year, Month, Day}, vcvalue.Decimal{Coefficient, Scale, Negative}), so encoding/json wrote them. Now noStorageForm refuses them. So a program with such a field cannot run stashgen again. Its old file cannot compile, because GeneratedVersion1 is gone, so no release reads those rows. The program must decrypt every such row with the earlier release before it upgrades. Please write this in the CHANGELOG under Breaking, with the steps to migrate. Better still, give Date and Decimal a storage form, or allow them for reading only.

unexported fields. A blob a later release writes is

compatibility commitment only once vitaminc releases it, so no Go

Nit. "no Go release should be cut while the pin is a pseudo-version". Nothing enforces this. The PR body says this is the owner's decision. Please make it a tracked item on #1347, so that the decision is not forgotten.

Agreed; not done here. Posting the task-list item on #1347 is outside what this session was permitted to write, so the thread stays open for the owner to add it. The item to add: cut no Go release while languages/golang/go.mod pins vcffi and vcvalue by pseudo-version (cipherstash/vitaminc#526); #1369 adds the mechanical guard to scripts/go-release-version.mjs; close when the pin moves to a released vitaminc.

Reopened for the owner: issue #1347 has no task-list item for this yet. The enforcement half is in place (scripts/go-release-version.mjs refuses a final Go release while the vitaminc pin is a pseudo-version).

stashgen refused an opaque field of type *time.Time, []*time.Time or any
other pointer to a type with MarshalText and UnmarshalText as "has
MarshalText but no UnmarshalText": textForm looked UnmarshalText up on a
pointer to the field's type, and the method set of **time.Time holds
neither method, while *time.Time still has MarshalText. Such fields were
accepted before the storage blob. textForm now strips pointers first,
which is what vcffi does: a pointer is written as its element and read
back into a new one.

The two type walkers, notJSONEncodable and notStorable, are one walk,
notCarried, which traverses slices, arrays, pointers, maps and structs
once and asks the JSON rule and the storage rule of every type it
reaches, each stopping below a type that carries itself. The gaps the
review found had slipped between the two copies; one walk has no second
copy to disagree with. The call site keeps the two preambles, and every
refusal case passes unchanged.

Tests: an opaque struct with At *time.Time, Ats []*time.Time, a map of
*time.Time and a **time.Time generates; a pointer to a MarshalText-only
type is still refused; and gensupport round-trips *time.Time and a nil
through the blob.

…migrate a stored Date or Decimal

Opaque handed a value that begins with neither the storage header nor
"{" to the JSON reader, which failed on it with a less clear error. A
JSON document of the shape struct is an object, so it always begins "{";
a value beginning with neither is now refused as ErrEncoding saying so,
pinned for "[]", "VC", "VC\x01", an empty value and "null".

The CHANGELOG and the stashgen README say that a row an earlier release
sealed with an encrypt.Decimal or encrypt.Date in an opaque struct does
not decrypt under this release, because no generated file can name the
field, and give the migration: decrypt with the earlier release, change
the field's type, encrypt again, before upgrading.

notStorableKey loses its slice branch: a Go map key is comparable, so a
slice never reaches it.

Brings in the vitaminc d7de535c4 pin for vcffi/vcvalue and the go-release
guard that refuses a final version while go.mod names a pseudo-version, so
the opaque storage profile builds against the pin it will ship with.

@coderdan - I'm sure you're on top of the issue regarding storing data in a pre-release vitaminc data format, but I've left the agent findings in here to keep it explicit that there's a dependency on a pre-release.

Thanks, @freshtonic. Yes, intentional. It was done so that I could make progress on the code here, while waiting for reviews in vitamin C. It's now being released as 0.8.1.

Existing rows with an encrypt.Date or encrypt.Decimal in an opaque struct cannot be decrypted after the upgrade.

Also aware of this one. Its a pre-release that makes no guarantees about format stability until 1.0.

Brings in the mutants gate fix from #1381, which reads the pull request's real base from the API and checks out the head, so the gate no longer diffs all of next and times out on this stack.

module and stack-encrypt, resolved by keeping both.
