Discussion: Wave Transformation In StormSim #110

Description

@fgarcia0128

Context From @jmelby:

We need simple depth limitation due to breaking in StormSim. There are two kinds of limitation:

  1. Hm0 Limiting: An integrated parameter characterizing the energy in a wave spectra that lasts, for example, 1/2 hour. As wave spectra enter shallow water, the highest waves will begin to break. Then as you go shallower in the surf zone, more and more waves break.
    • The B&J formula we have now limits Hm0 to between 0.4 *h - 0.6 * h but this breaker index can be higher on steeper slopes. Note that some breaker index formulations include steepness limiters. So you have to be careful to not double count if you are implementing steepness limits.

  2. Maximum wave height or some other extreme (H1%). This is a single wave. Goda's formulation is for this.

But both B&J and Goda are from the 1970's. There have been a bunch of studies and real world applications since then. We should have someone revisit the topic and come up with recommendations for SS. Note that this task should be a just a few days of labor. We are not looking for a R&D project"

Potential Solution:

  • Contract out task to provide a general approach for wave breaking (limiting Hm0) and one specific to wave forcing (Hmax or H1% for Goda pressures, depth-damage formulation, others) (From Jeff)
