- DICE - FireWire audio interfaces (Weiss, Loud, Focusrite, TC Electronic, M-Audio, etc.)
- HDSP - RME Hammerfall DSP PCI audio interfaces (Digiface, Multiface, 9652, etc.)
- Line6 - USB guitar/instrument audio interfaces (POD, TonePort, Variax, etc.)
cd /path/to/basound
make all-modulesThis produces the core module plus one module per supported device class:
basound.ko— ALSA shim / glue core (no device drivers)basound_hdsp.ko— RME Hammerfall DSP (PCI)basound_dice.ko— DICE FireWire interfacesbasound_digi00x.ko— Digidesign Digi 002/003 (FireWire)basound_line6.ko— Line6 USB audio interfacesbasound_maudio.ko— M-Audio MIDISport 8x8 (USB MIDI)
make alone builds only the core; make all-modules builds everything.

core is loaded automatically when a driver is loaded (and unloads only
after all drivers are gone).

kldload ./sys/dev/basound/dice/basound_dice.ko

kldload ./sys/dev/basound/maudio/basound_maudio.ko
# Verify loading
kldstat | grep basound
# Unload (core unloads last, after all drivers are gone)
kldunload basound_line6At boot, list the core plus the driver(s) you need in /boot/loader.conf:
kld_list="basound basound_hdsp"
To keep a loaded driver from probing, add its tunable:
hw.basound_hdsp.enable="0"
Note: with several basound drivers loaded simultaneously, only the ones whose probe matches actual hardware attach — e.g. a machine with only an RME card never attaches the Line6/M-Audio/DICE drivers even when their modules are loaded. Loading only what you need keeps probing to a minimum.

The DICE driver provides support for FireWire audio interfaces from multiple manufacturers. It:
- Probes for FireWire devices with vendor OUI (Organizationally Unique Identifier)
- Validates device category from FireWire config ROM (supporting multiple category IDs: 0x00, 0x04, 0x10, 0x20)
- Creates ALSA sound card with PCM and MIDI devices
- Manages DMA buffers for audio streaming
- Tracks stream state and position for proper audio I/O
- Exposes mixer controls to FreeBSD
Key Files:
sys/dev/basound/dice/dice_bsd.c- Main driver
Supported Vendors: 11 manufacturers with DICE devices
The HDSP driver provides support for RME Hammerfall DSP audio interfaces. It:
- Probes for RME PCI devices (Vendor ID 0x10EE)
- Detects device variant (Digiface, Multiface, or 9652) from hardware registers
- Allocates PCI resources (BAR0 for registers, IRQ for interrupts)
- Sets up interrupt handler for device event processing
- Creates ALSA sound card with multiple PCM streams and dual MIDI ports
- Manages firmware upload and hardware initialization
- Exposes matrix mixer controls for advanced routing
Key Files:
sys/dev/basound/hdsp/hdsp_bsd.c- PCI probing and resource allocation (176 lines)sys/dev/basound/hdsp/hdsp_main.c- ALSA card and PCM device creation (300 lines)sys/dev/basound/hdsp/hdsp_midi.c- Dual MIDI port management (21 lines)sys/dev/basound/hdsp/hdsp_mixer.c- Mixer control creation (64 lines)sys/dev/basound/hdsp/hdsp.h- Hardware register definitions and structures (167 lines)

- RME Multiface (18 in/out channels)
- RME Hammerfall DSP 9652 (26 in/out channels)
The Line6 driver provides support for USB audio interfaces from Line6, primarily instrument modeling processors and audio interfaces. It:
- Probes for USB devices with Line6 vendor ID (0x0E41)
- Matches product IDs for 11 specific device models
- Creates sound card with conditional PCM/MIDI/control support based on device capabilities
- Uses capability flags to enable/disable features per device

Key Files:
sys/dev/basound/line6/line6_bsd.c- Main driver
Supported Devices: 11 Line6 USB models
The ALSA shim layer provides Linux kernel API compatibility to allow ALSA driver code to compile and run on FreeBSD without modification. It:
- Wraps FreeBSD kernel structures in ALSA-compatible structures
- Implements ALSA device, card, and stream management APIs

- Supported Devices: 25+ professional audio models
- Modules: core
basound.ko+ one module per device class - Compilation: ✅ Clean (no errors, no warnings)
- Load test: ✅ all six modules load/unload cleanly (see Changelog)

- ✅ Each driver
MODULE_DEPENDs on the core;kldloadresolves the dependency automatically (verified: core auto-loads and unloads last) - ✅ Loading only the module matching your hardware means only that driver probes the bus — no cross-family detection traffic

hw.basound_<class>.enabletunables (loader.conf) to gate each driver's probe/identify without unloading the module - ✅ Added per-directory
Makefiles +make all-modules/make clean-modules - ✅ Removed the vestigial
DRIVER_MODULE(basound_pcm, ...)registrations that would have created a circularMODULE_DEPENDin the split (attach goes throughdevice_set_driver()directly) - ✅ Verified: all six modules build, load, and unload cleanly on
