Branch codex/expose-channel-hash-hex, cut directly from the original base. It was refreshed by a --no-ff merge of master; there was no rebase, amend, squash, cherry-pick or force-push. See "Refresh against master" below.

Downstream dependency: a client application that correlates channel messages with CoreScope observations.

Problem

Channel messages carried no protocol-derived channel identifier.

For a decrypted channel, the only channel identifier this API emitted was the operator-assigned configuration label: transmissions.channel_hash is set to the channel name (cmd/ingestor/db.go:2509-2510), and /api/channels re-emits that name as both hash and name. That label is not derived from the channel — it comes from channelKeys config, channel-rainbow.json, or a built-in default, and it can be renamed independently on every side.

The actual on-wire one-byte channel hash was already being read from the packet and stored — it was simply never emitted.

Developer decision

The downstream client must not treat the channel name as automatic, protocol-proven identity. CoreScope additively exposes the real wire hash instead.

Data provenance

cmd/ingestor/decoder.go:567

channelHashHex := fmt.Sprintf("%02X", buf[0])

buf[0] is the channel-hash byte of the GRP_TXT payload. The value is carried onto the decrypted CHAN payload (decoder.go:587) and persisted inside transmissions.decoded_json, which the ingestor solely owns. Both query paths read it from there.

The value is never derived from the channel name, from transmissions.channel_hash, or from a PSK. The validator has no access to any of them.

Note on omitempty: the sibling numeric ChannelHash int field drops a legitimate 0 under omitempty. The hex field is a string, where only "" is omitted, so "00" survives. That is why the hex string is the field this contract is built on.

Behaviour

Added to each channel message object:

{
  "sender": "Alice",
  "text": "hello",
  "timestamp": "...",
  "sender_timestamp": 1774643285,
  "channelHashHex": "A7"
}

Exactly two uppercase hex characters, including a leading zero: 00, 03, A7, FF.

Path parity

Both backends emit the same field with the same semantics:

  • in-memory PacketStore.GetChannelMessages (cmd/server/store.go) — new channelHashHex member on the private decodedMsg struct
  • SQLite DB.GetChannelMessages (cmd/server/db.go) — read from the already-unmarshalled decoded_json map

A dedicated parity test builds the same logical messages once and asserts both paths agree on channelHashHex, sender, text, sender_timestamp, packetHash and repeats.

Legacy and malformed

The key is left absent — never defaulted, never guessed — when the stored value is missing, empty, the wrong length, or not hexadecimal. Lowercase legacy values are normalised to uppercase. The six-character enc_<HEX> routing label is rejected by the same length check and can never appear in this field.

Rows legitimately lack the value. Companion-bridge MQTT channel messages (cmd/ingestor/main.go:872-905) synthesise a CHAN decoded_json from a bridge payload with no raw packet, so no hash byte exists for them.

Live / WebSocket surface — audited, deliberately unchanged

The live broadcast (cmd/server/store.go, IngestNewFromDB) does not emit semantic channel-message objects. It broadcasts raw packet/observation envelopes carrying decoded.payload (the full unmarshalled decoded payload) plus the verbatim decoded_json string. The same wire value is therefore already present on that surface for both decrypted and undecryptable packets, under the same channelHashHex name — but not with the same validation. decoded.payload is unmarshalled and broadcast verbatim; it does not pass through normalizeChannelHashHex/setChannelHashHex, so a malformed or lowercase stored value that REST would suppress is emitted here as-is. See the Correction section below (P3-3): this PR's validated channelHashHex contract applies to GET /api/channels/{hash}/messages only, and the downstream client must not treat a WebSocket-observed channelHashHex as validated REST evidence.

There is no separate ChannelMessage broadcast shape to add a canonical top-level field to, so no change was made there rather than inventing a new broadcast shape.

Security audit

  • No channel key or PSK is read, derived, stored, logged or emitted. The validator's only input is a two-character string.
  • The exposed byte is the first byte of the GRP_TXT/GRP_DATA payload envelope. It is sent unencrypted ahead of the encrypted body (firmware Mesh::createGroupDatagram); it is not a field of every packet header. This API already emits it for undecryptable channels as enc_<HEX>. (Wording corrected in 48a46edb.)
  • Tests assert the response contains no key/secret material, that the field is exactly two characters, and that it never carries an enc_ prefix.
  • Tests assert the operator-assigned channel name cannot influence the value: identical names with different wire bytes yield different outputs.
  • No repository-embedded key material: the leak-detection test uses a synthetic non-functional constant.

Collision warning

The field is one byte. It is protocol evidence, not a unique channel identifier — distinct channels collide. A test covers two different channel names sharing one wire hash and asserts both rows report it honestly rather than being suppressed or auto-disambiguated. It is documented in OpenAPI as COLLISION-PRONE and as insufficient on its own.

OpenAPI

  • new ChannelMessage and ChannelMessagesResponse component schemas; GET /api/channels/{hash}/messages now references the latter instead of the generic object placeholder, and documents its limit/offset/region query parameters
  • channelHashHex documented with pattern: ^[0-9A-F]{2}$, optional for legacy records, non-secret, collision-prone, independent of the channel name
  • the route description now states explicitly that the {hash} path parameter is the operator label / enc_<HEX> route key and not the on-wire hash
  • the two clock fields are documented as they already behave: sender_timestamp = the sender's embedded wire timestamp; timestamp = the existing observation/ingest-based display timestamp. Neither changes runtime semantics in this PR.
  • no field is declared required, so legacy records stay valid

Preserved

sender, text, timestamp, sender_timestamp, packetId, packetHash, repeats, observers/path/hops/SNR, pagination and totals, channel route/filter by the existing hash/name, and encrypted-channel list behaviour are all unchanged. timestamp was not switched to sender_timestamp.

Tests

New: cmd/server/channel_hash_hex_test.go, cmd/ingestor/channel_hash_hex_decoder_test.go.

  • decoder source contract: wire bytes 0x00/0x03/0xA7/0xFF → "00"/"03"/"A7"/"FF", on both the undecryptable and the decrypted CHAN path, plus a test that the channel name cannot alter the byte
  • validator matrix: 00, FF, lowercase normalisation, missing, empty, one/three characters, non-hex, leading space, enc_A7, numeric channelHash, full-length digest
  • an 11-case source matrix run identically against the SQLite path, the in-memory path, and a cross-path parity check
  • security: no key/PSK leakage, exact two-character length, no enc_ prefix, name-independence
  • collision: two names, one wire hash, both preserved
  • regression: routing by the wire hash value resolves nothing (the route key is still the name), and pagination totals are unaffected
  • OpenAPI contract test asserting the documented type/pattern, the collision and legacy wording, absence of a required list, the response $ref wiring, and that both clock fields remain documented

Validation performed

Check Result
gofmt on all changed files clean
cmd/server go test ./... pass
cmd/ingestor go test ./... 1 pre-existing failure, see below
go test -race (targeted, both changed modules) pass, no races
go vet ./... (both changed modules) clean
git diff --check clean
conflict markers / debug prints / new TODOs / secrets none

Pre-existing baseline failure, not caused by this PR: TestPruneOldNeighborMetrics (cmd/ingestor/observer_neighbor_metrics_test.go:128, "expected 1 row pruned, got 2") fails identically on an untouched detached worktree at f88bf97b. It concerns 30-day neighbor-metric pruning and is unrelated to this change. Reported rather than worked around; this PR is not claimed as fully green on cmd/ingestor.

Note: roughly 48 other files in cmd/server are gofmt-dirty on the untouched baseline. They were deliberately left alone to avoid unrelated drift.

Limitations

  • One byte is collision-prone and not a unique channel identity.
  • Legacy rows and Companion-bridge MQTT rows have no value and stay absent.
  • cmd/server's own decodeGrpTxt does not populate ChannelHashHex (only decodeGrpData does). It does not feed this surface: it has no channel keys, so its GRP_TXT payloads never become CHAN, and handlePostPacket inserts them with a NULL channel_hash, which both channel-message paths exclude. Left unchanged to avoid adding a field to unrelated /api/packets output.
  • This exposes a field; it does not implement any correlation.

Non-goals

  • Does not change timestamp or sender_timestamp semantics.
  • Does not change the existing hash/channel-name routing or the enc_XX encrypted-channel behaviour.
  • Does not expose PSKs or channel keys anywhere.
  • Does not implement the downstream client's correlation, text normalisation or identity lattice.
  • Does not solve the 256-bit-PSK Companion limitation (CMD_GET_CHANNEL truncates to 16 bytes), which needs a firmware/Companion change.

Explicitly not claimed

This PR does not claim the hash is globally unique, that it proves delivery, that name and hash are equivalent, that 256-bit Companion identity is solved, or that the downstream client is implemented.

Correction (P3 follow-up, commit 5a5a6ddb)

Addresses the three non-blocking P3 observations from the independent review by MACMINI: #11 (comment). All three are documentation/hardening only — no change to the field's data provenance, validation rules, or security posture described above.

  • P3-1 (in-memory path could drop a message on a non-string channelHashHex): The in-memory GetChannelMessages decode target typed the field as string, so a non-string stored value (e.g. a number, bool, object, array, or JSON null) failed the whole json.Unmarshal and silently discarded the entire message — while the SQLite path (map[string]interface{}) already survived this and merely omitted the field. Retyped the in-memory struct field to interface{} and left it passed through the existing setChannelHashHex validator unchanged, matching the SQLite path exactly. New test matrix (cmd/server/channel_hash_hex_test.go) covers numeric, boolean, object, array and JSON-null values against both backends: message stays present, channelHashHex stays absent, total counts match, all other fields are intact, and both backends agree. No caller could reach this before the fix (both decoders always write a Go string), so this was correctly scoped P3, not P2 — but it was a real behavior regression introduced by the original PR (before it, the struct had no such field and the message always survived).
  • P3-2 (absence wording understated Companion/MQTT permanence): Rewrote the channelHashHex OpenAPI description (cmd/server/openapi.go) to state plainly that absence always means "unavailable", never "zero" ("00" is a valid, meaningful present value); to enumerate all three absence causes — legacy records, malformed stored values, and Companion/MQTT-bridged messages, the last being permanent and by-design, not legacy backlog, since that ingest path never observes the raw packet envelope; and to restate that the field is never derived or reconstructed from the channel name, the {hash} route label, transmissions.channel_hash, or a channel key/PSK. TestOpenAPIDocumentsChannelHashHex now asserts the description mentions Companion, permanently, WebSocket, and the literal "00" present-value statement, alongside the pre-existing COLLISION-PRONE/Non-secret/legacy checks.
  • P3-3 (WebSocket surface unvalidated pass-through): Corrected the "Live / WebSocket surface" section above and the OpenAPI description to state explicitly that this PR's validated channelHashHex contract covers GET /api/channels/{hash}/messages only. The WebSocket broadcast passes decoded_json through without running normalizeChannelHashHex, so a malformed or lowercase stored value that REST would suppress is emitted there as-is; the downstream client must not treat a WebSocket-observed channelHashHex as validated REST evidence. Added a code comment at the broadcast site (cmd/server/store.go, the decoded["payload"] unmarshal in IngestNewFromDB) stating the same. No WebSocket code behavior was changed, per review scope.

Test evidence — fresh vs. reused: All channelHashHex-scoped tests (existing + the new non-string matrix + parity + OpenAPI contract) were re-run fresh on this commit, once each, both plain and -race: cmd/server targeted, cmd/ingestor targeted, full cmd/server suite, go vet on both modules, gofmt on the three changed files, git diff --check, and a secret/debug/TODO/conflict-marker scan — all clean. The full cmd/ingestor suite was not re-run in full (out of scope for a 3-file cmd/server-only diff); its baseline failure below was reconfirmed via a single targeted re-run.

Known baseline failure, unchanged and out of scope: TestPruneOldNeighborMetrics (cmd/ingestor/observer_neighbor_metrics_test.go:128) still fails identically to the original report and to MACMINI's independent reproduction on untouched f88bf97b — a 30-day-retention test with a hard-coded "recent" timestamp that has now itself aged past the retention boundary. Not fixed here; cmd/ingestor is not claimed fully green.

Staging: Still not performed by this correction. The staging gate remains owned exclusively by MACBOOK; this commit does not change that.

Micro-correction (contract-doc fix, 5a5a6ddb → 76cb8dfa)

Addresses the three new non-blocking P3 observations from MACMINI's independent delta review of the P3 correction (4c73571..5a5a6ddb): #11 (comment). Documentation, a missing code comment, and contract-test hardening only — no runtime, JSON-shape, or WebSocket payload change. Runtime is byte-identical to 5a5a6ddb except for one new source comment.

  • packetId description was wrong: it claimed a single consistent meaning ("CoreScope row id of the transmission"), but re-derivation against both live paths confirms a pre-existing backend divergence: the SQLite path (cmd/server/db.go) returns the observation row id, while the in-memory path (cmd/server/store.go) returns the transmission row id, for the same field. The OpenAPI description (cmd/server/openapi.go) now states the semantics are backend-dependent, warns against using packetId as a cross-backend correlation key, and points consumers — including the downstream client fix(live): restore the Multibyte only toggle before init awaits #88 — at packetHash instead, which is the stable cross-backend correlation identity. It does not claim the divergence is fixed and does not normalize packetId at runtime; the divergence itself is pre-existing and out of scope here.
  • Only one of the two WebSocket broadcast boundaries had the clarifying comment: the primary in-memory-store broadcast path (cmd/server/store.go, inside IngestNewFromDB's decoded["payload"] unmarshal) already carried it. The fallback direct-DB-query broadcast path (cmd/server/websocket.go, Poller.Start's store == nil branch — used when the in-memory store isn't wired, e.g. tests) did not. Added the same, semantically identical comment there: raw/unvalidated packet envelope, REST GET /api/channels/{hash}/messages goes through shared validation, WebSocket parity must not be assumed. Comment-only; no WebSocket code, payload shape, filtering, or serialization changed. Searched all hub.Broadcast(...) call sites in cmd/server/websocket.go to confirm exactly these two boundaries exist and no third path was missed.
  • The OpenAPI contract test didn't lock the load-bearing absence rule: TestOpenAPIDocumentsChannelHashHex (cmd/server/channel_hash_hex_test.go) previously only loose-keyword-checked Companion/permanently. It now also asserts the exact phrases Absence always means "unavailable" and never "zero", plus Companion/MQTT and permanently and by design together, locking the rule that absence is not the same as zero and that Companion/MQTT provenance can miss the field permanently — not just as legacy backlog. A new, focused TestOpenAPIDocumentsPacketIdBackendDivergence locks the corrected packetId description: it must mention backend-dependent semantics, warn against cross-backend correlation use, and reference packetHash.

Test evidence — fresh, this round: OpenAPI/contract tests (TestOpenAPI*, TestChannelHashHex*, including both new/strengthened assertions above) — pass; channel-message handler/serialization matrix and path-parity tests — pass; WebSocket-related tests (TestHubBroadcast, TestPoller*, TestParityWSMultiObserverGolden, TestWebSocketBroadcast_IncludesResolvedPath, TestIngestNewObservationsBroadcast, TestBroadcast*) plus go build ./... — pass, compiles clean; full cmd/server go test ./... — pass (28.6s); go vet ./... in both cmd/server and cmd/ingestor modules — clean; gofmt -l on the three changed files — clean (cmd/server/websocket.go has one pre-existing, unrelated Client struct field-alignment gofmt diff, confirmed identical on untouched 5a5a6ddb before this commit — not introduced by or fixed in this correction); git diff --check — clean; conflict-marker/debug-print/secret scan — clean. -race was not re-run for this comment/schema/test-only change since the runtime diff is empty (confirmed by the cumulative diff below). No cmd/ingestor suite run: this correction touches cmd/server only.

Cumulative diff vs. 5a5a6ddb: 3 files (cmd/server/openapi.go, cmd/server/websocket.go, cmd/server/channel_hash_hex_test.go), +63/−1, no new endpoints, no migration, no auth change, no WebSocket runtime change, no deployment/CI config, no unrelated cleanup.

Staging: Not performed by this correction. The staging gate remains owned exclusively by MACBOOK.

Refresh against master (2026-10-07, 76cb8dfa → 534cbb96)

The PR had gone CONFLICTING against master. It was refreshed with a single merge commit — git merge --no-ff origin/master at master 6444294d938083f6d935d0445c27bc6a7bbf360e (869 commits since the original base f88bf97b). No rebase, amend, squash, cherry-pick or force-push; 76cb8dfa is the merge's first parent and the push was a fast-forward.

Conflict resolution

One textual conflict, in cmd/server/openapi.go, in the Channels block of routeDescriptions():

cmd/server/db.go, store.go and websocket.go merged cleanly. The PR-owned files (channel_hash_hex.go, channel_hash_hex_test.go, channel_hash_hex_decoder_test.go) are byte-identical to 76cb8dfa. The PR's net diff against current master is 7 files, +890/−2, the same file set as before.

What master changed underneath the contract, and the decision for each

Area Change on master since f88bf97b Effect on this PR
Ingestor decoder source cmd/ingestor/decoder.go changed in one line only (decodeHeader now uses packetpath.RouteTypeFromHeader). channelHashHex := fmt.Sprintf("%02X", buf[0]) is still at decoder.go:567, and it is still carried onto CHAN at :587. None. The provenance is unchanged.
New ingest paths Client RX (cmd/ingestor/client_reception.go) decodes the raw packet via DecodePacket, so it carries the wire byte. Shared channel proposals add approved keys to the same decoder. The Companion bridge still builds CHAN without a raw packet (cmd/ingestor/main.go:1026-1056). None. Client RX and approved channels get the field. Companion rows stay absent, as already documented ("permanently and by design").
channel_hash semantics The write moved to cmd/ingestor/db.go:2653-2656 and is unchanged: the name for CHAN, enc_<HEX> for an undecryptable GRP_TXT. None.
SQLite GetChannelMessages Message map extended (first_seen, scope, routeType, entryPrefix, entryObserverPubkey, observedPathHashSizes, senderPathHashSize), and ping-bot reply aggregation was added. setChannelHashHex(m.Data, decoded[channelHashHexKey]) still runs right after the map is built (db.go:3775). It is additive and does not touch the new fields.
In-memory GetChannelMessages Same field additions. The ChannelHashHex interface{} decode member and the setChannelHashHex call merged cleanly (store.go:6445, :6578).
packetId divergence Still present on master: SQLite returns the observation row id (o.id), in-memory returns tx.ID. The OpenAPI "backend-dependent" wording is still accurate.
Response type Master introduced a named Go ChannelMessagesResponse{messages, total} (types.go), as part of Kpa-clawbot#1383. Same JSON shape as this PR's OpenAPI ChannelMessagesResponse schema. The OpenAPI components map and the Go type do not collide.
ChannelMessage schema Master did not add one. Kept as-is. It already declares additionalProperties: true, so master's extra message fields stay valid without being documented here.
WebSocket The store-backed poller branch was refactored into Poller.pollStore (websocket.go:370-411), with the same two Broadcast calls fed by IngestNewFromDB / IngestNewObservations. The store == nil fallback is unchanged. No new broadcast surface. Both clarifying comments (the store.go IngestNewFromDB payload unmarshal, and the websocket.go fallback branch) are still at the right boundaries. No WebSocket runtime change.
cmd/server/decoder.go PayloadJSON was removed. Nothing else changed. Not used by this PR. The limitation noted above still holds: server-side decodeGrpTxt does not feed this surface.

Verification (fresh, on 534cbb96)

Check Result
go vet ./..., cmd/server and cmd/ingestor clean
cmd/server go test -count=1 -race -timeout 20m ./... (as CI runs it) pass (578s)
cmd/ingestor go test -count=1 -timeout 20m ./... (as CI runs it) pass (139s): fully green
PR's own tests with -race (14 in cmd/server, 3 in cmd/ingestor) 17/17 pass
gofmt -l on all 7 changed files clean, except cmd/server/websocket.go. Its gofmt diff (Hub/Client struct field alignment) is identical on untouched master 6444294d, so it was not introduced here.
git diff --check origin/master..534cbb96 clean
conflict markers / debug prints / new TODOs / secrets none

Ingestor baseline: TestPruneOldNeighborMetrics, reported above as a pre-existing failure, passes on current master. The full cmd/ingestor suite is now green, and the earlier "not claimed fully green" caveat no longer applies.

Red-before (the PR's tests against master's production code, detached 6444294d):

  • PR test files only: cmd/server does not compile, because normalizeChannelHashHex is undefined. Red.

  • PR test files plus the pure helper channel_hash_hex.go, without the db/store/openapi wiring: 6 of the 14 server tests fail:

    • TestDBGetChannelMessagesChannelHashHexMatrix: all 5 present-value subcases fail.
    • TestStoreGetChannelMessagesChannelHashHexMatrix: all 5 present-value subcases fail.
    • TestChannelHashHexSecurityAndNameIndependence
    • TestChannelHashHexCollisionAcrossNamesIsPreserved
    • TestOpenAPIDocumentsChannelHashHex
    • TestOpenAPIDocumentsPacketIdBackendDivergence

The ones that pass are the validator unit tests, the absence and non-string subcases, and the routing/pagination regression, which are expected to hold without the wiring.

  • cmd/ingestor decoder tests: these 3 pass on master. They are characterisation tests that lock pre-existing decoder behaviour (buf[0]). This PR adds no ingestor production code, so they cannot be red-before.

Staging: Not performed by this refresh. The staging gate is still separate and unchanged.

Review fix (P3 ×2, 534cbb96 → 48a46edb)

This addresses the two non-blocking documentation findings from the independent review of 534cbb96: #11 (review). It is one ordinary commit. It changes OpenAPI description text only and adds tests; there is no runtime change.

  • sender_timestamp nullability (thread): both GetChannelMessages backends always emit the key, and serialize it as null when the decoded payload carries no sender timestamp. The description used to say "Absent". It now says the key is always present and null when unavailable. The schema was already nullable: true.
  • Channel-hash placement (thread): the phrase "transmitted in the clear in every packet header" was too broad. The byte is the first byte of the GRP_TXT/GRP_DATA payload envelope, written unencrypted ahead of the encrypted body (firmware Mesh::createGroupDatagram copies channel.hash into packet->payload before encryptThenMAC). It is not a field of every packet header. The non-secret conclusion is unchanged. The same phrase in this description's Security audit section is corrected as well.

Tests:

  • New TestOpenAPIDocumentsChannelMessageWireWording requires "null when unavailable" and rejects "Absent" for sender_timestamp. For channelHashHex it rejects "in the clear in every packet header" and requires "GRP_TXT/GRP_DATA payload envelope". Run against the old openapi.go it is red, with 4 assertion failures; on 48a46edb it is green.
  • New TestChannelMessagesSenderTimestampNullWhenUnavailable checks that both backends keep the key and serialize "sender_timestamp":null. It is green before and after, because it pins existing behaviour.

Verification on 48a46edb (fresh):

  • gofmt on both changed files: clean.
  • git diff --check: clean.
  • go vet ./... in cmd/server: clean.
  • The 16 channel-hash tests plus all TestOpenAPI* tests under -race: pass, 26 tests.
  • Full cmd/server go test -count=1 -race ./...: pass.
  • cmd/ingestor was not re-run, because this commit does not touch it.

Deployment

None performed. No staging or production system was contacted, deployed to, or verified. Unit, integration and fixture tests are not staging evidence. Staging deployment and contract verification are a separate gate owned by a different machine, to be run against a specific approved commit after independent review.

Channel messages carried no protocol-derived channel identifier. The only
channel identifier the API emitted for a decrypted channel was the
operator-assigned configuration label, which is not derived from the
channel and can be renamed independently on every side.

The one-byte channel hash is already read off the wire by the ingestor
decoder and stored in decoded_json; it was simply never emitted. Expose it
additively as channelHashHex on both channel-message query paths.

- add a single shared validator so the two paths cannot drift into separate
ad-hoc parsers: exactly two uppercase hex characters, "00" and "FF"
preserved, lowercase legacy values normalised, and missing/empty/wrong-
length/non-hex values reported as unavailable rather than guessed. The
six-character "enc_<HEX>" routing label is rejected by the same length
  check.
- emit it from DB.GetChannelMessages and PacketStore.GetChannelMessages,
both sourced from the decoded payload — never from the channel name,
from transmissions.channel_hash, or from a PSK.
- document the field in OpenAPI, along with the existing and unchanged
  timestamp / sender_timestamp clock semantics.

The field is one byte wide: collision-prone protocol evidence, not a unique
channel identity, and documented as insufficient on its own.

No existing field changes value, type or semantics. Channel routing still
keys on the existing name/hash label, and pagination, dedup, region
filtering and encrypted-channel behaviour are untouched.

2. Scope and provenance

Scope is clean. The diff touches exactly six files and contains no unrelated backend, database, migration, schema, CI or deployment change: no internal/dbschema change, no migration, no .github/, no config, no frontend. Non-test production delta is 6 lines (db.go +1, store.go +5) plus one new 58-line helper and the OpenAPI documentation.

Provenance verified against unchanged upstream code, not against the PR's own claims. channelHashHex originates only at cmd/ingestor/decoder.go:567 / :624 as fmt.Sprintf("%02X", buf[0]), where buf[0] is the channel-hash byte of the GRP_TXT / GRP_DATA envelope, and is carried verbatim onto the decrypted CHAN payload (decoder.go:587). Both call sites are pre-existing and untouched by this PR.

Confirmed it is never derived from any forbidden source:

  • Channel name — normalizeChannelHashHex takes a single interface{} and has no access to the name, key store or DB row. Independently confirmed at runtime: two rows with the same name and different wire bytes keep 11 / 22, and two rows with different names sharing byte A7 both keep A7.
  • transmissions.channel_hash — that column holds the operator channel name (or enc_<HEX>); it is the route key only. Routing by A7 / 00 / FF / enc_A7 resolves nothing.
  • PSK / channel key — no key material is read on this path.
  • Display text / heuristics — no fallback, no default, no reconstruction anywhere in the helper.

Format contract holds: exactly two uppercase hex characters; 00 is preserved as "00" (the sibling numeric ChannelHash field is omitempty and would silently drop a legitimate zero — using the hex string is the right call and is locked by test). Malformed or missing values yield an absent key, never a guess.

No secret exposure. No PSK, key, packet payload or credential is logged or emitted. Scans of the diff for secrets, debug prints, TODO/FIXME, and conflict markers: all clean. The only key-shaped literals are the synthetic leak-detection bait 00000000deadbeef00000000deadbeef and the pre-existing repo test key 2cc3d228…; neither can be confused with the real firmware default PSK 8b3387e9…, which already appears in the repo's own docs and config as a published firmware constant.

3. Path parity — verified independently, not by re-reading the PR's tests

Both query paths route through the same validator (setChannelHashHex → normalizeChannelHashHex), so drift is structurally prevented. I did not rely on that: I built an independent matrix of my own and ran it against the real DB.GetChannelMessages and PacketStore.GetChannelMessages (production code, real SQLite fixture + real PacketStore.Load()), on a scratchpad copy so the repository stayed untouched.

Including the byte values Phase 3 names that the PR's own matrix does not cover (01, 0A):

Input decoded_json.channelHashHex SQLite path In-memory path Parity
"00" 00 00 ✅
"01" 01 01 ✅
"0A" 0A 0A ✅
"0a" (lowercase) 0A 0A ✅
"FF" FF FF ✅
"ff" (lowercase) FF FF ✅
"A" (too short) absent absent ✅
"0AB" (too long) absent absent ✅
"0G" (non-hex) absent absent ✅
"" (empty) absent absent ✅
key missing entirely absent absent ✅
"enc_0A" (route label) absent absent ✅

Legacy Companion-bridge data specifically confirmed. I traced the Companion/MQTT bridge ingest (cmd/ingestor/main.go:895-906): it builds its CHAN payload from {type, channel, text, sender, sender_timestamp} only, with no channelHashHex key — correct, because the Companion device delivers already-decrypted text and CoreScope never sees the wire envelope byte. Its channel value is ch<idx>, an index label, correctly not used as a hash source. Both paths report such rows as absent, in parity. Nothing is guessed.

4. API / OpenAPI and live surface

  • ChannelMessage and ChannelMessagesResponse are added and documented; the response shape matches the actual handler (ChannelMessagesResponse{Messages, Total}, routes.go:3285). Verified — not assumed.
  • The field is documented as type: string, pattern: ^[0-9A-F]{2}$, explicitly optional (no required list — correct, since legacy and Companion-bridged rows legitimately omit it), explicitly non-secret, and explicitly COLLISION-PRONE / not a unique channel identity. That last point is the important one for the downstream MeshViewLive consumer and it is stated plainly.
  • The route description correctly separates the {hash} route key (channel name or enc_<HEX>) from the new on-wire field. This removes a genuine ambiguity.
  • No new WebSocket shape is invented — the diff contains no WebSocket change at all.
  • The WebSocket claim is accurate. I verified it rather than accepting it: store.go:2886-2890 unmarshals tx.DecodedJSON verbatim into decoded["payload"], so raw packet envelopes broadcast over WS already carry decoded.payload.channelHashHex for every ingestor-decoded packet. Leaving WS unchanged is the correct call.
  • Server-side decoder paths without channel identity are not falsely enriched. cmd/server/decoder.go's decodeGrpTxt has no channel keys, never produces a CHAN payload, and does not set the field; handlePostPacket inserts those rows with channel_hash NULL, which both channel-message paths exclude. The PR's own inline comment stating this is correct as written.

5. Test quality

The new tests exercise real production code, not source strings: real SQLite fixtures through DB.GetChannelMessages, and a real PacketStore.Load() through PacketStore.GetChannelMessages. Both storage paths are covered, plus an explicit cross-path parity assertion, the 00 case, malformed/legacy absence, one-byte collision preservation, routing/pagination regression, a no-secret-leak assertion, and an OpenAPI contract lock (including a guard that the field must never enter a required list). The ingestor-side tests pin the %02X producer contract independently. This is a genuinely good test set.

Honest baseline-failure status

cmd/ingestor is not fully green, and this PR should not be described as if it were.

--- FAIL: TestPruneOldNeighborMetrics (0.01s)
    observer_neighbor_metrics_test.go:128: expected 1 row pruned, got 2

I reproduced this once on a separate detached worktree at untouched base f88bf97b — the failure is byte-identical (same test, same line 128, same message). Classified as pre-existing and unrelated to this PR.

Root cause, for the record: the test hard-codes recent = "2026-07-26T12:00:00Z" and prunes with a 30-day retention. That row passed the 30-day boundary on ~2026-08-25, so the "recent" row is now pruned too and 2 rows are removed instead of 1. It is a time-bomb test that has now expired, not flakiness and not contention — it will fail deterministically from here on, on master and on every branch, until the fixture is made relative to now. Worth its own issue; out of scope for this PR.

6. P3 observations (non-blocking — none of these hold up the merge)

P3-1 — In-memory path drops a message outright if channelHashHex is a non-string JSON type.
store.go:5454 types the new field as string inside the struct json.Unmarshal target, and the loop does if json.Unmarshal(...) != nil { continue }. So a non-string value fails the whole unmarshal and discards the entire message; the SQLite path (map[string]interface{}) keeps the message and merely omits the field. Reproduced against real production code on both backends:

sqlite total=2 → rv_numeric channelHashHex=<nil>, rv_ok channelHashHex="A7"
in-mem total=1 → rv_ok channelHashHex="A7"
MESSAGE-COUNT PARITY BREAK: sqlite 2 vs in-memory 1

Why this is P3 and not P2: no CoreScope writer can produce it. Both decoders declare the field as a Go string, and decoded_json is only ever written from those marshals, so the value is always a string or absent. It also only affects the in-memory path, which the handler uses solely when s.db == nil. It is reachable only through hand-edited/externally-written rows or a future non-Go producer. Note that this is a behaviour change introduced by the PR — before it, the struct had no such field and the message survived. One-line hardening if you want it, mirroring the DB path exactly: type the field interface{} and keep passing it to setChannelHashHex, which already validates.

P3-2 — "legacy" understates when the field is absent.
The schema description says the field is "absent for legacy records whose decoded payload has no wire value". Accurate but incomplete: every message ingested through the Companion/MQTT bridge will also be absent — permanently and by design, not as legacy backlog, because that path never sees the wire byte. Since MeshViewLive #88 is the consumer, wording that reads as "old rows only" could invite an assumption that the field is present for current traffic. Suggest documenting absence as a normal, ongoing state for Companion-bridged messages.

P3-3 — The WebSocket surface is unvalidated pass-through.
WS emits decoded.payload verbatim, so it does not run through normalizeChannelHashHex. In practice the ingestor always writes canonical %02X, so the two surfaces agree today. But a lowercase or malformed stored value would be emitted raw on WS while REST suppressed it. Worth stating explicitly in the contract so the consumer does not treat the WS value as pre-validated. No change requested.

7. What was NOT done or verified

  • No deployment, and no staging or production contact of any kind. Nothing here is staging evidence. The staging gate is owned exclusively by MACBOOK.
  • No merge, no gh pr ready, no issue closure. PR API: expose on-wire channelHashHex on channel messages #11 remains OPEN/draft at the same head; CoreScope API: expose on-wire channelHashHex on decrypted channel messages #10 and MeshViewLive fix(live): restore the Multibyte only toggle before init awaits #88 remain OPEN.
  • No code change, commit, push or branch. The review worktree is detached and clean; my extra matrix ran on a scratchpad copy outside the repository.
  • No 10× repeat runs. Every check above was run once, as scoped.
  • Only the two affected modules (cmd/server, cmd/ingestor) were run. The other modules (cmd/migrate, cmd/decrypt, internal/*) were not run — they are untouched by this diff.
  • No frontend/JS tests, no end-to-end or live-traffic verification, no real-device or real-mesh packet capture.
  • Toolchain note: this machine had no Go installed, so the suites ran on a freshly installed go1.27.0 darwin/arm64. Both modules declare go 1.22. This is a newer toolchain than CI may use — results should be read with that in mind.

Recommendation

The change does exactly what CoreScope #10 asked for and nothing more: additive, wire-sourced, both paths at parity behind one shared validator, honest about collisions, absent rather than guessed, no secret exposure, and the WebSocket surface correctly left alone. No blocking findings — ready for a merge decision. The three P3 items above are optional follow-ups. The cmd/ingestor module is not fully green, but the single failure is a pre-existing expired time-bomb test reproduced identically on untouched f88bf97b.

Staging deployment and contract verification remain MACBOOK's exclusively, and MeshViewLive #88 implementation stays blocked until that verification is done.

Addresses the three non-blocking P3 observations from MACMINI's review
of PR #11 (github.com//pull/11#issuecomment-5420317166):

- P3-1: the in-memory GetChannelMessages decode target typed
channelHashHex as string, so a non-string stored value failed the
whole json.Unmarshal and silently dropped the containing message.
Retyped to interface{} (matching the SQLite path's
map[string]interface{} decode) and passed through the existing
setChannelHashHex validator unchanged, so a malformed value only
drops the optional field, never the message. Covered by a new
numeric/boolean/object/array/null matrix run against both backends
  plus a cross-path parity check.

- P3-2: the OpenAPI field description said absence was for "legacy
records", which undersells that Companion/MQTT-bridged messages are
permanently absent by provenance, not legacy backlog. Rewrote the
description to enumerate all absence causes, state plainly that
absence means unavailable (never zero) and that "00" is a valid
present value, and restate that the field is never derived from the
channel name, route label, PSK, or transmissions.channel_hash.

- P3-3: clarified in the OpenAPI description and with a code comment
at the WebSocket broadcast site (store.go) that the validated
  channelHashHex contract applies to
GET /api/channels/{hash}/messages only — the live WebSocket surface
passes decoded_json through unvalidated and must not be treated as
equivalent REST evidence. No WebSocket behavior change.

No unrelated changes. TestPruneOldNeighborMetrics remains a known
pre-existing failure on unmodified base f88bf97, unrelated to this
PR and not touched here.

Handoff — P3 correction pushed

Role: MINIMAX (MiniMax.local), original PR author, correcting the three P3 findings from MACMINI's independent review: #11 (comment)

Old SHA: 4c73571176d6efad8ea958dc4d87f5ea49e3e920
New SHA: 5a5a6ddbc2a89a4d575a5130bab9e23ed64fa902
Push: ordinary fast-forward correction commit — no amend/rebase/squash/force-push.

Delta (3 files, cmd/server only)

  • cmd/server/store.go — P3-1: in-memory GetChannelMessages decode target retyped channelHashHex from string to interface{}, matching the SQLite path's map[string]interface{} decode, so a non-string stored value only drops the optional field, never the message. Also added a code comment at the WebSocket broadcast site (P3-3) stating that surface is unvalidated raw pass-through.
  • cmd/server/openapi.go — P3-2 + P3-3: rewrote the channelHashHex schema description to (a) state absence always means "unavailable" never "zero", (b) enumerate legacy / malformed / permanently-absent-Companion-bridge as the three absence causes, and (c) state the validated contract covers GET /api/channels/{hash}/messages only, not the WebSocket surface.
  • cmd/server/channel_hash_hex_test.go — new numeric/boolean/object/array/null matrix run against both backends + cross-path parity (locks the P3-1 fix); TestOpenAPIDocumentsChannelHashHex extended to require the new wording.

PR body updated in place with a "Correction (P3 follow-up, commit 5a5a6ddb)" section covering all three items, fresh-vs-reused test evidence, and the known baseline TestPruneOldNeighborMetrics failure (unchanged, unrelated, not fixed here).

Independent delta review — P3 corrections (4c73571 → 5a5a6ddb)

Reviewer: MACMINI (Openclaws-Mac-mini.local, hostname verified), read-only independent reviewer — same reviewer that raised the three P3 findings. Not the author. No code change, commit, push, PR-body edit, ready-status, merge, deployment, or staging/production contact from this review.

Verdict: PASS — all three corrections are correct and complete. No P1, no P2.

READY FOR MACBOOK STAGING GATE — INDEPENDENT DELTA REVIEW PASSED

Four new P3 observations follow; none blocks the staging gate, and I explain below why each stays P3.

2. Delta and scope audit

Correction delta = 3 files, +140 / −5, all in cmd/server:

File Nature
cmd/server/store.go P3-1 one-line type change + P3-3 comment (comment-only at the WS site)
cmd/server/openapi.go P3-2 + P3-3 — one description string
cmd/server/channel_hash_hex_test.go new non-string matrix ×2 backends + parity, extended OpenAPI contract test

Confirmed absent from the delta: new endpoints, persistence/schema migration, auth/authorization change, WebSocket runtime change, staging/deployment configuration, unrelated refactor, secrets/credentials/payload logging, TODO/debug/conflict markers. git diff --check clean on both the delta and the cumulative diff; gofmt -l clean on all changed Go files (checked read-only, nothing written to the worktree, which remains clean and detached).

3. P3-1 — in-memory / SQLite parity: CORRECT

The fix is precisely the one recommended: ChannelHashHex in the in-memory decode target retyped string → interface{}, with the raw value still handed to the existing setChannelHashHex, mirroring the SQLite path's map[string]interface{} decode. I read both paths in the actual Go source rather than relying on the tests or the PR description.

Point by point:

  1. Arbitrary JSON type no longer fails the decode — interface{} accepts any JSON value, so json.Unmarshal succeeds and the message survives. ✅
  2. Validator unchanged and still strict — normalizeChannelHashHex is untouched; only the documented 2-char hex string is accepted. ✅
  3. Non-string → field absent, message preserved — verified, see table below. ✅
  4. No panic path — the validator's only type operation is the comma-ok assertion s, ok := v.(string), which is safe for nil, numbers, bools, maps and slices. No reflection, no bare assertion, no nil dereference. ✅
  5. Valid hashes, including "00", survive unchanged. ✅
  6. Both paths agree for all five non-string cases. ✅
  7. Persistence format untouched — the retyped field exists only in a local unmarshal target; nothing is re-marshalled or written back. No SQL, no insert, no schema change anywhere in the delta. ✅
  8. Tests drive the real backends — real SQLite fixture through DB.GetChannelMessages, real PacketStore.Load() through PacketStore.GetChannelMessages, and the real shared validator. Not a parallel implementation, not a source-string check. ✅

Manual re-derivation through both paths, comparing the serialized API result. As required, I did not stop at the PR's own tests: I drove the real HTTP handler GET /api/channels/{hash}/messages for the SQLite backend, and the real in-memory backend through ChannelMessagesResponse + json.Marshal, then compared the actual JSON. I also added cases the PR does not cover (float, nested-null object, empty array, empty object):

SERIALIZED API totals: sqlite total=11 msgs=11 | in-memory total=11 msgs=11
Stored channelHashHex SQLite (serialized) In-memory (serialized) Parity
167 (numeric) absent absent ✅
true (boolean) absent absent ✅
{"a":1} (object) absent absent ✅
["A","B"] (array) absent absent ✅
null absent absent ✅
1.5 (float) absent absent ✅
{"x":null} (nested null) absent absent ✅
[] / {} (empty) absent absent ✅
"00" "00" "00" ✅
"A7" "A7" "A7" ✅

Message counts are now equal (11 = 11). For reference, the same harness on 4c73571 produced sqlite 2 vs in-memory 1 — the regression is genuinely closed, and every other message field is byte-identical across backends except packetId, which is a separate pre-existing issue (P3-NEW-1 below).

4. P3-2 — OpenAPI absence semantics: CORRECT

Checked the schema and route description directly in cmd/server/openapi.go, against each requirement:

  • Absence documented as "unavailable" — "Absence always means "unavailable", never "zero"." ✅
  • Absence never equated with "00" or numeric zero — ""00" is a valid, meaningful present value, never an absence" plus the explicit never "zero". ✅
  • "00" documented as a valid present string ✅
  • Companion/MQTT permanence — "(3) every message ingested through the Companion/MQTT bridge — permanently and by design, not merely legacy backlog, because that path delivers already-decrypted text and never observes the raw packet envelope." ✅ This matches what I independently traced in cmd/ingestor/main.go:895-906, where the bridge builds its CHAN payload with no channelHashHex key at all.
  • No stale "legacy backlog may later acquire a value" claim — actively refuted by "its absence does not mean every new message eventually gets it". ✅
  • Schema type / optionality / runtime output agree — type: string, pattern: ^[0-9A-F]{2}$, no required list; runtime emits only a 2-char uppercase string or nothing, confirmed empirically above. ✅

I also searched the repository for contradictory descriptions of channelHashHex, zero/absence, legacy, and Companion/MQTT. The only other occurrences are JS test fixtures and proto/testdata packet captures carrying real channelHashHex values — no conflicting prose anywhere.

5. P3-3 — REST / WebSocket boundary: CORRECT

  • The validated contract is scoped to REST — the description now ends with "This validated contract covers GET /api/channels/{hash}/messages only." ✅ Confirmed in code that handleChannelMessages (routes.go:3285) is the only consumer of setChannelHashHex output.
  • WebSocket is raw pass-through — decoded["payload"] is the verbatim json.Unmarshal of tx.DecodedJSON; it never touches normalizeChannelHashHex. ✅
  • The correction changes documentation only at the WS site — the store.go WebSocket hunk is purely added comment lines; zero runtime change. ✅
  • The PR body no longer claims REST/WS parity — it now states the value is present there "but not with the same validation". ✅
  • Comment is accurate and cannot be misread as a guarantee — it says explicitly "Consumers must not treat a WebSocket channelHashHex as pre-validated REST evidence." ✅

6. Fresh validation (serial, once each, on 5a5a6ddb)

Module boundaries were resolved properly: this repo has 15 Go modules; the cumulative PR touches exactly two (cmd/server, cmd/ingestor), and the correction delta touches only cmd/server. Tests were run per-module, not from a presumed root module.

Known baseline failures — correct attribution

cmd/ingestor production code is byte-identical between base and head; the module's only difference is the added test file channel_hash_hex_decoder_test.go. Nothing in either failure can be attributed to this PR.

(a) TestPruneOldNeighborMetrics — reproduced baseline, deterministic.

--- FAIL: TestPruneOldNeighborMetrics
    observer_neighbor_metrics_test.go:128: expected 1 row pruned, got 2

Run isolated on 5a5a6ddb, then isolated on untouched f88bf97b in a separate detached baseline worktree: byte-identical failure (same test, same line, same message). Root cause as reported previously: the fixture hard-codes 2026-07-26T12:00:00Z against a 30-day retention, so it is an expired time-bomb that now fails deterministically everywhere. Not fixed here, not a PR regression. Reported as reproduced baseline — cmd/ingestor is not green, and this PR is not claimed green on that module.

(b) TestBackfillTxLastSeen_ResolvesFromMaxObservationTimestamp — pre-existing flaky, newly surfaced.

--- FAIL: TestBackfillTxLastSeen_ResolvesFromMaxObservationTimestamp
    tx_last_seen_backfill_test.go:63: last_seen = 100, want 300 (MAX of 100,300,200)

This did not fail in the first-round full run at 4c73571, and my first isolated sample failed on head while passing on base — which would have been a review finding. I did not stop at that sample. Repeating it isolated three times per side gives:

run 1 run 2 run 3
head 5a5a6ddb pass pass fail
base f88bf97b fail pass fail

It is nondeterministic on both sides — flaky, not head-specific, and therefore not a PR regression. Likely mechanism: OpenStore schedules the tx_last_seen_backfill_v1 async migration (cmd/ingestor/db.go:211) whose body is the very backfillTxLastSeen the test then calls directly, so the background migration races the test's own seeding. Worth its own issue; entirely outside this PR. It also means the full cmd/ingestor suite is currently nondeterministic, which anyone gating on it should know.

7. New P3 observations — all non-blocking

P3-NEW-1 — packetId differs between backends, and this PR's new schema documents it incorrectly. (Highest-priority follow-up.)
The new ChannelMessage schema documents packetId as "CoreScope row id of the transmission." On the in-memory path that is true (store.go uses tx.ID). On the SQLite path — the one production actually uses, since handleChannelMessages prefers the DB — db.go:3508 assigns pktID, which is scanned from o.id, the observation id, not t.id. Reproduced directly:

inserted DB transmission ids: pid_a=4 pid_b=5 pid_c=6
pid_a: sqlite packetId=5 in-memory packetId=4
pid_b: sqlite packetId=6 in-memory packetId=5
pid_c: sqlite packetId=7 in-memory packetId=6

Attribution, stated precisely: the code divergence is pre-existing — db.go:3508 and store.go are identical on untouched f88bf97b, and this PR's only db.go change is the single setChannelHashHex line. What is new in this PR is the OpenAPI sentence asserting a fact about packetId that does not hold on the primary backend.

Why I keep this P3 and not P2: no runtime behaviour changed, it is not a regression, there is no security dimension, the existing frontend already prefers packetHash for links (public/packets.js:3483), and the three corrections actually under review are each correct. Fixing it means either correcting one description string or changing a scan target — a separate change that would exceed this deliberately narrow correction commit. That said, this is a real contract inaccuracy on the field a correlation consumer would most naturally reach for, so if the developer prefers to correct the sentence before the staging gate, that is a reasonable call and I would not argue against it. MeshViewLive#88 should correlate on packetHash, not packetId.

P3-NEW-2 — only one of the two WebSocket broadcast boundaries carries the new comment.
decoded["payload"] is built and broadcast in two places: IngestNewFromDB (store.go:2897, now commented) and IngestNewObservations (store.go:3193, not commented). Both feed hub.Broadcast from the same poller (websocket.go:286 and :292). The runtime behaviour is identical at both — raw pass-through — and the client-facing OpenAPI text correctly describes the WebSocket surface as a whole, so no consumer is misled. This is purely internal comment coverage: a reader landing on IngestNewObservations gets no warning. Doc-only, non-blocking.

P3-NEW-3 — the OpenAPI contract test under-locks exactly the wording P3-2 was about.
TestOpenAPIDocumentsChannelHashHex asserts the description contains COLLISION-PRONE, Non-secret, legacy, Companion, permanently, WebSocket, and the literal "00". It does not assert the key sentence Absence always means "unavailable" — the central claim of P3-2. And the "00" check is already satisfied by the pre-existing example list ("00", "03", "A7", "FF"), so it does not actually prove that "00" is documented as a present value rather than an absence. The description itself is correct; the lock is just weaker than the requirement it guards, so a future edit could silently remove the "unavailable" semantics without failing the test. Non-blocking, and deliberately not over-specified — I am not asking for prose-brittle assertions, only for the one semantic phrase.

P3-NEW-4 — second baseline flake. TestBackfillTxLastSeen_ResolvesFromMaxObservationTimestamp (detailed in §6b). Pre-existing, unrelated, deserves its own issue.

8. What was NOT done or verified

  • No staging or production contact of any kind, and no deployment. Nothing here is staging evidence. The staging gate is owned exclusively by MACBOOK.
  • No code change, commit, push, branch, PR-body edit, gh pr ready, merge, or issue closure. My extra harness ran on a scratchpad copy outside the repository; the review worktree stayed clean and detached throughout.
  • No 10× loops. Every check was run once, except the three-per-side repetition used solely to diagnose the head-vs-base discrepancy in §6b, which single runs would have mis-reported.
  • Only the two modules the PR touches were tested. The other 13 modules were not run — untouched by this diff.
  • No frontend/JS tests, no end-to-end run against live traffic, no real-device or real-mesh capture.
  • The packetId divergence (P3-NEW-1) was not exhaustively traced through every other endpoint — I verified it only for GET /api/channels/{hash}/messages.
  • Toolchain: go1.27.0 darwin/arm64; both modules declare go 1.22. Newer than CI may use — read results with that in mind.

All three P3 corrections are correct, minimal, and properly tested against real backend code. The delta introduces no runtime change beyond the single in-memory type fix, no scope creep, and no new risk. No blocking findings.

READY FOR MACBOOK STAGING GATE — INDEPENDENT DELTA REVIEW PASSED

Merge decision and the staging deployment/verification of the exact approved commit remain MACBOOK's exclusively. MeshViewLive #88 stays blocked until that staging verification is done; #88 and CoreScope #10 both remain OPEN.

Corrects three P3 documentation findings from the independent delta
review of 4c73571..5a5a6dd: the packetId schema description now
documents its backend-dependent id semantics and points consumers
(including MeshViewLive #88) at packetHash for stable cross-backend
correlation; the fallback WebSocket broadcast path (used when the
in-memory store is nil) now carries the same raw/unvalidated-envelope
comment already present on the primary store-backed broadcast path;
and the OpenAPI contract test now locks the load-bearing "absence
always means unavailable, never zero" rule plus Companion/MQTT
permanent-absence wording, and the corrected packetId description.

No runtime behavior, JSON shape, or WebSocket payload change.

Micro-correction handoff — P3 contract-doc fixes

Head: 5a5a6ddb → 76cb8dfa (ordinary fast-forward commit, no amend/rebase/squash/force-push).

Addresses the three new P3 findings from the independent delta review (comment):

  1. packetId description corrected — now documents backend-dependent id semantics (SQLite: observation id, in-memory: transmission id) and points consumers at packetHash for stable cross-backend correlation.
  2. Missing WebSocket comment added — the fallback direct-DB broadcast path (cmd/server/websocket.go) now carries the same raw/unvalidated-envelope comment already present on the primary in-memory-store broadcast path (cmd/server/store.go). Comment-only, no WebSocket behavior change.
  3. OpenAPI contract test strengthened — now locks the exact load-bearing phrase "absence always means unavailable, never zero", Companion/MQTT permanent-absence wording, and a new focused assertion on the corrected packetId description.

Validation: OpenAPI/contract, channel-message handler/serialization, and WebSocket-related tests pass; full cmd/server suite passes; go vet clean on both changed modules; gofmt/git diff --check clean. Cumulative diff vs. 5a5a6ddb: 3 files, +63/−1, docs/comment/contract-test only — no runtime, JSON-shape, or WebSocket payload change.

Full details in the updated PR body under "Micro-correction (contract-doc fix, 5a5a6ddb → 76cb8dfa)".

Next action: independent micro-delta review, then the MACBOOK staging gate.

Independent micro-delta review — contract-doc corrections (5a5a6ddb → 76cb8dfa)

Reviewer: MACMINI (Openclaws-Mac-mini.local, hostname verified directly), read-only independent reviewer — the same reviewer that raised the three P3 findings this delta addresses. Not the author. No code change, commit, push, branch, PR-body edit, ready-status, merge, deployment, or staging/production contact from this review.

Verdict: PASS — the micro-delta is correct, complete, and does exactly what it claims. No P1, no P2.

2. Delta and scope audit

Micro-delta = exactly the three expected files, +63 / −1, all in cmd/server:

File Nature
cmd/server/openapi.go one description string literal (packetId)
cmd/server/websocket.go one 8-line comment block, comment-only
cmd/server/channel_hash_hex_test.go +4 assertions in an existing test, +1 new focused test

Confirmed absent from the delta: store/DB/handler runtime, API JSON shape, WebSocket runtime, migrations, endpoints, auth, deployment/CI, secrets/logging, unrelated refactor. cmd/server/db.go, cmd/server/store.go and cmd/server/channel_hash_hex.go are blob-identical between 5a5a6ddb and 76cb8dfa.

3. packetId verdict — the correction is accurate

Re-derived directly from both backend paths, not from the PR description:

  • SQLite path — cmd/server/db.go:3348/3356 selects SELECT o.id, t.id, … and scans position 1 into pktID (db.go:3402/3408); db.go:3508 emits "packetId": pktID. So packetId = observations.id, the observation row id.
  • In-memory path — cmd/server/store.go:5586 emits "packetId": tx.ID, the transmission row id.
  • Divergence is pre-existing, not introduced here: both sites are byte-identical on untouched f88bf97b, and the delta does not touch either file.
  • The correction changes no runtime value — the only openapi.go change is the description string (see §6).

packetHash as the correlation identity checks out: SQLite emits t.hash and the in-memory path emits tx.Hash — the same transmission hash on both paths — and cmd/ingestor/db.go:351 declares hash TEXT NOT NULL UNIQUE, so it is present and unique in production, not merely "usually there". The wording promises stability across backends without promising more availability than the code delivers.

Independent corroboration: CoreScope's own frontend already correlates on packetHash, not packetId (public/channels.js merge path, locked by test-channels-merge-1498-unit.js), and channels.js:689/709 synthesizes packetId from yet another source (c.packet.id) on the WS path. The corrected guidance for #88 matches what this repo already does in practice.

No contradictory prose survives anywhere: the old "CoreScope row id of the transmission." string is gone repo-wide, and docs/api-spec.md carries no competing description (type only).

4. WebSocket boundary verdict

I searched for the broadcast sites myself rather than trusting the PR body. hub.Broadcast( appears at three call sites, all in cmd/server/websocket.go inside Poller.Start:

Site Source Raw decoded_json pass-through? Caveat comment
websocket.go:286 (newTxs) PacketStore.IngestNewFromDB yes — store.go:2893-2896 yes, store.go:2886-2893 (added earlier in this PR)
websocket.go:292 (newObs) PacketStore.IngestNewObservations yes — store.go:3190-3195 no — see P3-1
websocket.go:323 (fallback) direct DB query, store == nil yes — verbatim tx row yes, added by this delta

The two annotated comments are semantically equivalent (raw/unvalidated envelope, no normalizeChannelHashHex/setChannelHashHex, REST goes through shared validation, parity must not be assumed). Neither claims runtime parity. The REST contract statement is correct: GET /api/channels/{hash}/messages is the path that runs through the shared validator in cmd/server/channel_hash_hex.go.

The delta changed only the comment at the fallback site — no filtering, serialization, payload or broadcast behavior changed (proven in §6).

5. Contract-test verdict

The assertions run against the real generated document, not a source-text grep: the tests call componentSchemas(), which is the exact function buildOpenAPISpec embeds at openapi.go:915 under components.schemas and handleOpenAPISpec serves; TestOpenAPISpecEndpoint additionally exercises the served endpoint. Nothing greps production source.

I verified the new assertions are genuinely load-bearing by mutation testing — in a scratchpad copy of the module, never in the repo or the review worktree (restored byte-identical afterwards, confirmed with cmp). Every removal or reversal of the load-bearing semantics fails the suite:

Mutation applied to the description Result
Absence always means "unavailable", never "zero". → Absence means the value is zero. FAILS ✔
permanently and by design, not merely legacy backlog → as part of the legacy backfill backlog FAILS ✔
drop Companion/MQTT provenance call-out FAILS ✔
its identity semantics are backend-dependent → … are consistent FAILS ✔
Must not be used as a cross-backend correlation key. → Safe to use as a correlation key. FAILS ✔
should use packetHash instead → should use this id instead FAILS ✔

And they are not unduly brittle to irrelevant punctuation — semantics-preserving edits still pass: reordering the "00"/"03"/"A7"/"FF" examples, dropping a trailing period, and swapping an em-dash for a comma elsewhere in the string all remain green (one deliberate exception in P3-3 below).

Absence/zero, "00"-is-present, permanent Companion/MQTT absence, backend-dependence, and the packetHash pointer are all locked. The tests document the backend divergence rather than hiding it.

Fresh runs on MACMINI, serial, once each:

  • OpenAPI contract tests (TestOpenAPI*, incl. both new/strengthened tests) — PASS
  • Channel-hash / channel-message handler + serialization tests — PASS
  • WebSocket tests (TestHubBroadcast, TestPoller*, TestParityWSMultiObserverGolden, TestIngestNewObservationsBroadcast, TestBroadcast*, …) — 16/16 PASS
  • Full cmd/server suite — PASS (see P3-5 for an honest caveat about behavior under CPU load)
  • go vet ./... — clean in both cmd/server and cmd/ingestor
  • git diff --check — clean on the delta and the cumulative diff
  • conflict-marker / TODO / debug-print / secret scan on added lines — clean

-race was not re-run, and I agree with that call: the delta contains zero executable change (§6), so it cannot alter concurrency behavior.

6. Non-runtime audit (AST-level, not eyeballed)

I parsed both revisions with go/parser without ParseComments and reprinted the AST, so comments are absent by construction and only executable structure is compared:

  • cmd/server/websocket.go — normalized AST output is identical between 5a5a6ddb and 76cb8dfa. The change is provably comment-only.
  • cmd/server/openapi.go — exactly one AST line differs, and within it the prefix ("packetId": map[string]interface{}{"type": "integer",) and suffix ("},) are byte-identical; only the description string literal value changed. A public documentation string, nothing else.
  • cmd/server/channel_hash_hex_test.go — top-level declarations differ by exactly one addition, TestOpenAPIDocumentsPacketIdBackendDivergence. No helper or existing declaration changed. Test-only file.

This confirms the intended boundary precisely: the generated OpenAPI document output does change (deliberately, that is the point of the fix), while message/handler/store behavior, JSON shape, WebSocket payload, and persistence/query semantics do not.

7. PR body and handoff comment

Old/new heads are stated correctly; the backend divergence is described accurately; #88 is pointed at packetHash; the runtime/non-runtime boundary is stated precisely; staging is repeatedly and correctly reserved to MACBOOK; no staging evidence is claimed anywhere, and unit/fixture tests are explicitly disclaimed as such. The body's disclosure of the pre-existing gofmt diff is accurate and matches my own measurement exactly. One completeness claim is overstated — P3-1.

8. P3 observations (none blocking)

P3-1 — a third raw pass-through broadcast boundary carries no caveat comment. websocket.go:292 broadcasts the output of PacketStore.IngestNewObservations, which at store.go:3190-3195 performs the identical raw decoded_json → decoded["payload"] unmarshal as the annotated IngestNewFromDB site, and therefore re-emits any stored channelHashHex unvalidated whenever a new observation of an existing transmission arrives. It has no caveat comment. Consequently the PR body's claim — "Searched all hub.Broadcast(...) call sites in cmd/server/websocket.go to confirm exactly these two boundaries exist and no third path was missed" — is inaccurate as written; there are three such boundaries and two are annotated. Why this stays P3: the code at that site is byte-identical to f88bf97b, so nothing regressed; and the consumer-facing contract is not misleading, because the OpenAPI channelHashHex description scopes its caveat to the entire WebSocket surface ("CoreScope's live WebSocket broadcast is a separate, unvalidated surface…"), not to individual call sites. No consumer, #88 included, can be misled by the missing in-code comment. Reported rather than edited, per review scope. Worth a one-line follow-up commit or its own issue, plus a correction to that sentence in the PR body.

P3-2 — proto/channel.proto:37 still describes packet_id as "Packet ID of the first observation". That single-meaning description is now inconsistent with the corrected, backend-dependent OpenAPI text (it happens to describe the SQLite path only). Pre-existing and untouched by this PR, and the proto/ schemas are not imported by cmd/server, so nothing is served from them — low impact, but worth aligning when the proto files are next revised.

P3-3 — one deliberate brittleness in the new assertions. The tests require the quoted forms Absence always means "unavailable" and never "zero"; a semantically identical unquoted rewording (Absence always means unavailable, never zero.) fails. This is intentional per the test's own comment ("lock the exact phrasing rather than just the loose keyword check"), and I agree the quoted terms are the load-bearing distinction — flagging it only so a future editor knows the quotes are load-bearing, not incidental.

P3-4 — pre-existing gofmt diff in cmd/server/websocket.go. gofmt -l flags the file under go1.27.0 for Client struct field alignment at ~line 75 (conn/send padded to 9 rather than 10 columns against closeOnce). The gofmt -d output is byte-identical at f88bf97b, 5a5a6ddb and 76cb8dfa, i.e. entirely unrelated to the delta's comment at line ~312. Correctly attributed to the baseline, correctly left unfixed. The PR body discloses this accurately; only the shorter handoff comment says "gofmt … clean" without the caveat.

P3-5 — cmd/server is not deterministically green under CPU contention, on head and on base. My first (cold) full-suite run failed; four subsequent uncontended runs passed. Under deliberate CPU load I reproduced the failure family on both sides: at 76cb8dfa, TestHandleNodePaths_HopName_CanonicalPathShowsTarget_1144 and later TestHandleAnalyticsSubpathDetailWithStore (1/3 contended runs); at untouched f88bf97b, TestHandleAnalyticsSubpathsWithStore (1/3 contended runs). All fail the same way — 503 {"error":"index loading","retryAfter":5} — a race between store-backed handler tests and the asynchronous index build. Not attributable to this delta, which contains zero executable change (§6), and reproduced on the untouched base. Reported honestly rather than smoothed over: the suite is green serially, but "full cmd/server suite passes" should not be read as deterministic under load. Deserves its own issue.

The two known cmd/ingestor baseline failures (TestPruneOldNeighborMetrics, TestBackfillTxLastSeen_ResolvesFromMaxObservationTimestamp) were treated as out of scope and not re-run; this delta touches cmd/server only.

9. Verdict and next action

The micro-delta does exactly the five things it set out to do: it documents the existing backend-dependent packetId semantics correctly, points #88 and other cross-backend consumers at packetHash, comments the fallback WebSocket raw/pass-through boundary, strengthens the OpenAPI contract tests, and changes the OpenAPI document output plus comments and tests — and nothing else.

READY FOR MACBOOK STAGING GATE — INDEPENDENT MICRO-DELTA REVIEW PASSED

No deployment and no staging/production contact from this review. Unit, integration and fixture evidence is explicitly not staging evidence. MACMINI holds no merge and no deploy authority.

Next action, in order: (1) merge decision on PR #11; (2) MACBOOK deploys the exact commit 76cb8dfa to staging and verifies the contract there — no other machine may perform or attest that gate; (3) only then may MeshViewLive #88 implementation start. CoreScope #10 and MeshViewLive #88 both remain OPEN; #88 implementation remains BLOCKED. No background process is running.

Parked on purpose: this is a prerequisite for a downstream messaging feature that is on hold for now. It will be updated against current master and re-tested when that work resumes.

Refresh PR #11 against current master. One textual conflict:

- cmd/server/openapi.go, route descriptions for the Channels group:
kept master's "GET /api/channels" description verbatim (approved and
hidden channels, #251) and kept this branch's
  "GET /api/channels/{hash}/messages" entry (route-key wording,
  ChannelMessagesResponse $ref, limit/offset/region query params).
gofmt realigned the /api/channels key; no wording changed.

db.go, store.go and websocket.go merged cleanly. The channelHashHex
setter still runs after master's expanded message map is built in
both GetChannelMessages paths; the ingestor decoder source (buf[0])
is unchanged on master.

Rapport — CS PR #11 channelHashHex refresh — head 534cbb9

Status: Refreshed against master and ready for a new independent review. Still a draft. Nothing was marked ready, merged or deployed.

This supersedes the "parked" note above: the downstream messaging work has resumed.

What changed since the August review (76cb8dfa)

The branch now has exactly one new commit: 534cbb96, a --no-ff merge of origin/master at 6444294d, with parents 76cb8dfa and 6444294d. There was no rebase, amend or force-push. The push was a fast-forward of 76cb8dfa..534cbb96.

  • PR-owned files are byte-identical to 76cb8dfa: cmd/server/channel_hash_hex.go, cmd/server/channel_hash_hex_test.go, cmd/ingestor/channel_hash_hex_decoder_test.go.
  • Only conflict: cmd/server/openapi.go, Channels route block. I took master's GET /api/channels description verbatim (channels: hide revoked shared channels from the channel list (historical messages keep them visible), and decide case handling of proposal names #251). I kept this branch's GET /api/channels/{hash}/messages entry unchanged. gofmt realigned one map key.
  • Auto-merged, logic unchanged:
    • db.go: one setChannelHashHex line, now after master's expanded message map at :3775.
    • store.go: the interface{} decode member and the setter at :6445 and :6578, plus the existing comment.
    • websocket.go: the existing fallback-branch comment.
  • Net PR diff vs current master: 7 files, +890/−2. Same file set as reviewed.

The per-area audit of what master changed underneath the contract is in the PR body, under "Refresh against master". It covers the decoder source, the client RX and channel-proposal ingest paths, channel_hash semantics, both GetChannelMessages backends, the packetId divergence, the named Go ChannelMessagesResponse, and the WebSocket pollStore refactor. Short version: nothing master changed alters the contract's provenance, validation or surface.

Suggested review delta

git diff 76cb8dfa 534cbb96 -- cmd/server/openapi.go

That shows the conflict resolution. The other files carry only master's own changes.

git diff 6444294d 534cbb96

That shows the PR's full net effect on top of current master, 7 files.

git diff 76cb8dfa 534cbb96 --stat -- cmd/server/channel_hash_hex.go cmd/server/channel_hash_hex_test.go cmd/ingestor/channel_hash_hex_decoder_test.go

That one should print nothing, because those three files are unchanged.

Points worth a reviewer's eye:

  1. In both GetChannelMessages paths, the channelHashHex set still happens on the final message map, and master's ping-bot aggregation (pendingPings) does not bypass it.
  2. Poller.pollStore (websocket.go:370-411) is master's refactor of the store-backed broadcast that the store.go comment already covers. No third broadcast surface exists.

Verification on 534cbb96 (fresh)

  • go vet ./...: clean in both cmd/server and cmd/ingestor.
  • cmd/server, go test -count=1 -race ./...: pass.
  • cmd/ingestor, go test -count=1 ./...: pass, fully green. TestPruneOldNeighborMetrics now passes on master.
  • The PR's own 17 tests under -race: pass.
  • gofmt: clean, apart from websocket.go's struct-alignment diff, which is identical on master.
  • git diff --check: clean.
  • Red-before against master 6444294d:
    • Tests only: cmd/server does not compile.
    • Tests plus the pure helper, without the wiring: 6/14 server tests fail. They are the DB matrix, the store matrix, security/name-independence, collision, and the two OpenAPI contract tests.
    • The 3 ingestor decoder tests pass on master. They are characterisation tests of pre-existing decoder behaviour.

Not done: staging or any deployment, ready-for-review, merge.

Reviewed exact head 534cbb96b7b1132631c8e5e97ecf27a2f4ee6b57 against base 6444294d938083f6d935d0445c27bc6a7bbf360e. No blocking runtime, security, or performance findings in this change. Two non-blocking documentation corrections are attached inline.

The shared validator preserves 00, normalizes lowercase, and rejects missing/malformed/non-string values without discarding the containing message. Both REST storage paths use it; channel names, routing labels and PSKs are not used to reconstruct the byte. The one-byte collision limitation and the separate, unvalidated WebSocket surface are correctly called out.

Independent source checks also traced the value through the actual MeshCore group-packet envelope, the ingestor decoder, and stored decoded payload.

Fresh verification on an isolated export of this exact commit:

  • Full cmd/server suite: PASS (41.940 s).
  • Targeted channel-hash/parity/OpenAPI tests under -race: PASS.
  • Ingestor wire-byte contract tests under -race: PASS.
  • go vet ./... in both modules and parent-to-head whitespace check: clean.
  • A review-only probe confirmed that an unavailable sender timestamp serializes as sender_timestamp: null in both storage paths.

I did not rerun the complete ingestor suite or perform staging/browser validation for this API-only review. GitHub CI run 37596452394 was still in progress at the last check; these local results are not a claim that CI has passed. This review does not merge or deploy the PR.

[P3] Document an unavailable sender timestamp as null, not absent

Both DB.GetChannelMessages and PacketStore.GetChannelMessages always insert the sender_timestamp key into the response map. When the decoded payload has no value, JSON serialization emits "sender_timestamp": null; a review-only probe confirmed this in both paths. The schema already allows null, so please change the description from 'Absent' to 'null when unavailable'. This is a documentation mismatch, not a new runtime regression.

Fixed in 48a46edb. The sender_timestamp description now says the key is always present and its value is null when unavailable; it no longer says "Absent". TestOpenAPIDocumentsChannelMessageWireWording fails on the old wording and passes on the new one. TestChannelMessagesSenderTimestampNullWhenUnavailable locks the runtime side: both backends keep the key and serialize "sender_timestamp":null. No runtime change.

Always exactly two uppercase hex characters when present, including a leading zero (\"00\", \"03\", \"A7\", \"FF\") — \"00\" is a valid, meaningful present value, never an absence. Optional, and its absence does not mean every new message eventually gets it: the field stays absent whenever the wire byte was never available or could not be trusted, which includes (1) legacy records stored before this field existed, (2) malformed stored values, rejected rather than guessed, and (3) every message ingested through the Companion/MQTT bridge — permanently and by design, not merely legacy backlog, because that path delivers already-decrypted text and never observes the raw packet envelope. Absence always means \"unavailable\", never \"zero\". Non-secret — the byte is transmitted in the clear in every packet header and no channel key or PSK is read or exposed to produce it. Never derived or reconstructed from the operator-assigned channel name, the {hash} route/path label, transmissions.channel_hash, or a channel key/PSK — only ever copied from the value the ingestor decoder read off the wire. COLLISION-PRONE: one byte is not a unique channel identity — distinct channels collide, so this field is an evidence component to be combined with other signals, never sufficient on its own to identify a channel. This validated contract covers GET /api/channels/{hash}/messages only. CoreScope's live WebSocket broadcast is a separate, unvalidated surface: it passes each packet's raw decoded_json through verbatim as decoded.payload, so a channelHashHex value observed there has not gone through this validator and must not be treated as equivalent REST evidence.",

[P3] Describe the byte as part of the group-packet payload envelope

The phrase 'transmitted in the clear in every packet header' is too broad. MeshCore places the channel-hash byte at the start of the GRP_TXT/GRP_DATA payload envelope (Mesh::createGroupDatagram writes channel.hash into packet->payload), and the ingestor reads that byte in decodeGrpTxt. It is not a universal header field on adverts, ACKs, direct messages, etc. Please narrow the wording to the cleartext group-packet envelope. The non-secret conclusion and this PR's runtime behavior remain correct.

Fixed in 48a46edb. The channelHashHex description now says the byte is the first byte of the GRP_TXT/GRP_DATA payload envelope, sent unencrypted ahead of the encrypted body, and explicitly not a field of every packet header. I checked this against firmware Mesh::createGroupDatagram, which copies channel.hash into packet->payload before encryptThenMAC. The non-secret conclusion is unchanged. TestOpenAPIDocumentsChannelMessageWireWording rejects the old "in every packet header" phrase and requires the envelope wording; it fails on the old text. The same over-broad phrase in the PR description's Security audit section is corrected too. No runtime change.

…ement

Review follow-up for PR #11 (two non-blocking P3 documentation findings).
OpenAPI description text only; no runtime change.

- sender_timestamp: both GetChannelMessages backends always emit the key
and serialize it as null when the decoded payload has no sender
timestamp. The description said "Absent"; it now says the key is always
  present and null when unavailable.
- channelHashHex: "transmitted in the clear in every packet header" was
too broad. The byte is the first byte of the GRP_TXT/GRP_DATA payload
envelope, written unencrypted ahead of the encrypted body
(firmware Mesh::createGroupDatagram), not a field of every packet
header. The non-secret conclusion is unchanged.

Tests: TestOpenAPIDocumentsChannelMessageWireWording fails on the old
wording and passes on the new. TestChannelMessagesSenderTimestampNull-
WhenUnavailable locks the null serialization in both backends; it passes
before and after, because it pins existing behaviour.

Review feedback addressed (commit 48a46edb)

This addresses review #11 (review). The commit changes OpenAPI description text only and adds tests; there is no runtime change.

  1. sender_timestamp: the description now says the key is always present and null when unavailable, instead of "Absent". (thread)
  2. channelHashHex: the byte is now described as the first byte of the GRP_TXT/GRP_DATA payload envelope, sent unencrypted ahead of the encrypted body, and not a field of every packet header (firmware Mesh::createGroupDatagram). The non-secret conclusion is unchanged. The same phrase in the PR description is corrected too. (thread)
  3. Tests:
    • TestOpenAPIDocumentsChannelMessageWireWording is red on the old wording and green on the new.
    • TestChannelMessagesSenderTimestampNullWhenUnavailable pins "sender_timestamp":null in both backends.
    • Full cmd/server suite under -race: pass.

The PR stays a parked draft. I have not marked it ready, merged it, or deployed it. I left both threads unresolved for the reviewer.

Review — CS-Macmini PR#11 — head 48a46ed

Dom: APPROVE med nits

Independent, read-only review. Branch codex/expose-channel-hash-hex, head 48a46edb (confirmed unchanged by git ls-remote before and after the review). Reviewed as the merge of the head into current origin/master eb8f54bb: git merge-tree --write-tree produces tree 7aaaad24 with no conflict, and a local git merge --no-ff in a throwaway clone produces the identical tree. Net diff vs. current master is 7 files, +962/−2, the same file set the PR body claims. No push, no merge, no PR change, no issue created, no staging or production contact, no API key used.

Findings

# Sev Area Finding
F1 nit (fix before merge) cmd/server/openapi.go The published API spec now names a private downstream repository and issue number in ChannelMessage.packetId.description. This repository is public and the spec route is unauthenticated, so the name is served to every API consumer. The PR body is careful to say only "a client application" / "the downstream client"; the shipped documentation is not.
F2 nit docs/api-spec.md Not updated. The GET /api/channels/:hash/messages section enumerates the response fields in a jsonc block and does not list channelHashHex; it also still omits the region query parameter this PR documents in OpenAPI. The two documents now disagree on the same endpoint, and issue scope asked for "OpenAPI/schema/docs updated".
F3 nit tests Nothing pins the field through the HTTP endpoint. All 16 new server tests call DB.GetChannelMessages / PacketStore.GetChannelMessages directly; no test asserts channelHashHex in the serialized response body, nor that annotateMessageAreas / annotateBotReplyTouchedAreas leave it intact.
F4 nit tests The new decoder tests bypass DecodePacket, so none of the PR's own tests pins the payload offset — the thing that makes the value "the wire byte". channel_hash_hex_decoder_test.go hands decodeGrpTxt a pre-sliced payload. See mutant M2 below.
F5 nit tests The issue's regression list is only partly covered. Region filtering and encrypted-channel list behaviour get no test here; dedup/repeats only indirectly (as a field name in the parity assertions).
F6 nit tests Both parity tests are green-before: they pass against master's production code too, because both backends agree on "absent". They do not themselves demonstrate the new behaviour — the two matrix tests are the load-bearing ones.
F7 nit process Commit authorship. 3 of the 5 commits are authored and committed as Dennis Jakobsen <dennisjakobsen@MiniMax.local>, 1 as dborup <3627142+...@users.noreply.github.com>; only 48a46edb uses the required dborup <kontakt@meshview.dk>.
F8 observation cmd/server/db.go vs store.go Path parity does not extend to undecryptable channels. The SQLite path serves enc_<HEX> route keys and now emits channelHashHex on those rows too; the in-memory path filters on decoded.Type == "CHAN" and never serves them. Pre-existing divergence, the emitted value is correct and never enc_-prefixed, but it is a surface the PR body scopes out ("decrypted channel messages") and it has no test.

No correctness defect found in the field's value, its validation, or its absence semantics.

F1 is trivially fixable and the contract test does not depend on it: TestOpenAPIDocumentsPacketIdBackendDivergence asserts only backend-dependent, cross-backend and packetHash. [T] I deleted the repository/issue clause from the description and TestOpenAPIDocuments* + TestChannelHashHex* stayed green.

1. Wire correctness

Verified against the firmware, not against the PR's description of it.

  • [A] Frame layout re-derived from firmware/src/Packet.cpp (readFrom): header(1) [+ transport_codes(4) when route is TRANSPORT_FLOOD/TRANSPORT_DIRECT] + path_len(1) + path(hash_count × hash_size) + payload. hash_size = (path_len >> 6) + 1, hash_count = path_len & 63.
  • [A] firmware/docs/payloads.md "Group text message" / "Group datagram": channel hash is the first payload byte, 1 byte, "first byte of SHA256 of channel's shared key". firmware/src/MeshCore.h has PATH_HASH_SIZE 1; Mesh.cpp reads it as pkt->payload[i++] on receive and createGroupDatagram copies channel.hash into packet->payload before encryptThenMAC. So the corrected PR wording ("first byte of the GRP_TXT/GRP_DATA payload envelope, sent unencrypted ahead of the encrypted body, not a field of every packet header") is accurate, and the non-secret conclusion holds.
  • [A] cmd/ingestor/decoder.go DecodePacket advances the offset by 4 for transport routes, then by the path byte's own hash_size × hash_count, bounds-checks, and passes buf[offset:] to decodePayload. decodeGrpTxt/decodeGrpData then read buf[0]. The transport-route offset and the variable path hash size are therefore both handled before the byte is read.
  • [T] I wrote an independent oracle that recomputes the offset straight from the firmware layout (including isValidPathLen's 4-reserved / MAX_PATH_SIZE 64 rule) and ran it over 165 real GRP_TXT packets from test-fixtures/e2e-fixture.db through the production DecodePacket: every one matched the oracle and the channelHashHex already persisted in decoded_json. Path hash widths exercised: 154 packets at 1 byte, 11 at 2 bytes. One fixture frame claims 74 path bytes and is correctly rejected by the pre-existing path-validity guard.
  • [T] No transport-routed GRP_TXT exists in the fixture DB, so I synthesised TRANSPORT_FLOOD (0x00) and TRANSPORT_DIRECT (0x03) frames with a 2-byte-wide, 2-hop path: channelHashHex is A7 as the layout requires, and the transport codes parse.
  • [T] Live cross-check on a local Go server with the prepared fixture DB: #wardriving → 81, #chat → B8, #bot → CA, #test → D9, public → 11, each equal to the byte my oracle reads at the computed offset from that row's raw_hex.

The value is never derived from the name: normalizeChannelHashHex takes a single interface{} and has no access to the name, transmissions.channel_hash, or any key. Confirmed by mutant M4.

2. API contract

  • Additive and optional, missing where unknown, never wrong. [T] normalizeChannelHashHex rejects nil, "", 1/3-char, non-hex, enc_A7, a full SHA digest, and non-string JSON (number, bool, object, array, null); setChannelHashHex then leaves the key absent rather than defaulting. Lowercase legacy values normalise to uppercase. "00" survives, which is the reason the hex string rather than the omitempty int is the contract field. [T] Live sweep of all 5 channels, 81 messages: every value matches ^[0-9A-F]{2}$, zero violations; enc_<HEX> rows carry the bare byte with no prefix.
  • Typed struct field, no new map[string]interface{}. [A] Partly. The in-memory decode target gains a real struct member (ChannelHashHex interface{}); the SQLite side reads the already-unmarshalled decoded_json map. But the outgoing channel-message object is map[string]interface{} on both paths on master already (ChannelMessagesResponse.Messages is []map[string]interface{}), and this PR adds a key to it rather than introducing a typed ChannelMessage Go type. No new map[string]interface{} is introduced in production code: the only new occurrences are the OpenAPI schema literals, which is how every schema in that file is written. The interface{} rather than string typing is deliberate and correct — a string field would fail the whole Unmarshal and silently drop the entire message on a non-string stored value, which the matrix tests now cover on both backends.
  • Consistency. [T] Live /api/spec: ChannelMessage and ChannelMessagesResponse exist, the route's 200 response $refs ChannelMessagesResponse, limit/offset/region are declared as query params plus hash as a path param, channelHashHex carries type: string + pattern: ^[0-9A-F]{2}$, additionalProperties: true is set and there is no required list, so legacy records stay valid. The route description correctly states that {hash} is the operator label / enc_<HEX> route key and not the on-wire hash. The gap is docs/api-spec.md — see F2.
  • WebSocket section correct? [A] Yes. Both broadcast boundaries pass raw data through: store.go IngestNewFromDB sets decoded["payload"] from the verbatim unmarshalled decoded_json and also ships the decoded_json string on the nested packet object; the websocket.go store == nil fallback broadcasts the DB row map as-is. Neither calls normalizeChannelHashHex, so a lowercase or malformed stored value that REST suppresses is emitted there unchanged — exactly what the PR body and the two new code comments say. There is no semantic channel-message broadcast shape, so "audited, deliberately unchanged" is an accurate description rather than an omission. One nit already noted upstream: this is documented but not tested, and F8 means the two REST backends do not agree on which channels are served either.
  • Both prior review threads (sender_timestamp nullability, channel-hash placement) are genuinely addressed in 48a46edb: [T] the live response keeps the key and serialises "sender_timestamp":null on undecryptable rows, and the description now says "The key is always present; its value is null when unavailable". Both threads are still unresolved in the UI (marked outdated).

3. Tests — red before, green after

[T] Red-before, reconstructed on the merged tree by restoring db.go, store.go and openapi.go to current master and keeping the test files plus the pure helper. 7 tests fail:

--- FAIL: TestDBGetChannelMessagesChannelHashHexMatrix
--- FAIL: TestStoreGetChannelMessagesChannelHashHexMatrix
--- FAIL: TestChannelHashHexSecurityAndNameIndependence
--- FAIL: TestChannelHashHexCollisionAcrossNamesIsPreserved
--- FAIL: TestOpenAPIDocumentsChannelHashHex
--- FAIL: TestOpenAPIDocumentsPacketIdBackendDivergence
--- FAIL: TestOpenAPIDocumentsChannelMessageWireWording

Without the helper file the package does not compile at all. Both query paths and the OpenAPI contract are therefore red-before and green-after. The ingestor decoder tests are characterisation tests over pre-existing code and cannot be red-before, as the PR body states. See F3/F6 for what is not pinned.

[T] Green-after on the merged tree, all fresh, -count=1:

Suite Result
cmd/server go test ./... pass (38.6s)
cmd/ingestor go test ./... pass (105s), fully green
go vet ./..., both modules clean
sh test-all.sh pass, 232/232 files
node test-frontend-helpers.js pass, 709/709
gofmt -l on the 7 changed files clean except websocket.go, whose Hub/Client field alignment is dirty identically on untouched master — pre-existing, confirmed
scripts/check-xss-sinks.sh --diff origin/master clean (no public/** changes at all)
Fork guards 9 in deploy.yml, 1 in release-fast-path.yml, untouched by this PR
Closing keywords in the PR body none ("Relates to #10")
Hardcoded colors n/a, no CSS/JS touched

[T] E2E against a local Go server with e2e-fixture.db prepared as CI does (freshen, the #1486/#1791 seed SQL, corescope-migrate, seeds 2073 and 199), server stopped afterwards by port lookup: test-channel-issue-1087-e2e 3/3, test-channel-issue-1111-e2e 2/2, test-channels-client-state-152-e2e 6/6, test-channel-fluid-e2e 15/15, test-channels-154-155-e2e 8/8, test-issue-1367-channels-chat-app-e2e 9/9, test-channels-observed-path-hash-size-e2e 8/8, test-channels-list-render-e2e 8/8, test-channels-ws-batch-e2e 6/6. All green. The PR adds no E2E of its own.

[T] Regression checks done live rather than in a test, covering the issue's list that F5 leaves unpinned: pagination (limit=5&offset=0 vs offset=5 → 5 + 5 rows, no overlap, total stable at 17), region filter (unknown region → total: 0), and routing by the wire hash (/api/channels/81/messages → total: 0, the route key is still the name).

CI per job, run 37599695299, head 48a46edb [K]: Go Build & Test pass (18m8s), Playwright E2E pass (25m24s), Docker build pass, Release/Deploy/Badges skipped. No failed steps in any job, so neither of the known flaky tests (Hash Stats sort, backfill write-hold) needed a retry.

Mutants

Five of my own, on the merged tree. Four are killed by the PR's own tests; one survives them.

# Mutation Result
M1 decodeGrpTxt: read the hash from the wrong offset (buf[1] instead of buf[0]) killed — all 3 ingestor contract tests fail (ChannelHashHex = "88", want A7), and my own fixture/transport tests fail too
M2 DecodePacket: drop the 4-byte transport-code skip, so the hash is read 4 bytes early on transport routes survives the PR's 3 new decoder tests (they bypass DecodePacket). Killed by my synthetic transport test and by pre-existing decoder_test.go / client_rx_minimised_test.go. This is F4.
M3 setChannelHashHex: fall back to a name-derived byte when the stored value is unusable killed — 6 absence subcases fail on each backend, plus the 5 non-string subcases on each
M4 Feed both call sites a value derived from the channel name instead of the wire byte killed — TestChannelHashHexSecurityAndNameIndependence, TestChannelHashHexCollisionAcrossNamesIsPreserved, both matrices, both non-string matrices, TestChannelHashHexNonStringParity
M5 Drop the uppercase normalisation (strings.ToUpper) killed — 3 TestNormalizeChannelHashHex subcases plus the lowercase legacy normalized row on both backends

4. Performance and read-only

[A] No extra per-message lookup: setChannelHashHex is one type assertion, a 2-character loop, an uppercase and a map write, called once per newly created message entry on each path (the dedupe branches reuse the existing entry, which is correct — the SQLite path keys on transmission_id and the in-memory path on sender + ":" + hash, so every row sharing a key shares the same decoded_json). No query, no join, no N+1. The in-memory decode struct gains one interface{} member, which is a negligible allocation.

[A] cmd/server stays read-only: the diff adds no INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE/Exec. The production diff is one line in db.go, a struct member plus one call plus a comment in store.go, a comment in websocket.go, the schema/description text in openapi.go, and the new helper file. cmd/ingestor gains no production code at all. No behaviour change beyond the purpose was found: the openapi.go Response/QueryParams additions feed only the spec generator, and the /api/channels conflict resolution kept master's description verbatim.

What I did not verify

  • Staging or production. Nothing was deployed or contacted; no API key used. That gate is separate and not mine.
  • The downstream client's correlation logic, which lives outside this repository.
  • The in-memory (PacketStore) path live. It is covered by the new unit tests on both matrices and both parity tests, but my live server ran DB-backed, so the in-memory branch of the handler was only exercised in-process.
  • The WebSocket surface live. I verified the two broadcast boundaries and their payload construction by reading the code; I did not drive live packets through a socket, because that needs an ingestor feeding new rows.
  • The full Playwright matrix locally. I ran 9 channel-related E2Es; the rest I take from the green CI job.
  • -race, which CI's Go job runs and I did not repeat.
  • The claimed original red-before at the first base (f88bf97b) and the historical TestPruneOldNeighborMetrics baseline failure. I reconstructed red-before against current master instead, and the ingestor suite is fully green there, so the earlier caveat no longer applies.
  • route_mask, ping-bot reply aggregation and the other message fields master added underneath this contract beyond confirming the new call site still runs after the map is built and does not touch them.
