Relates to #310

Cause

A test that points the standard logger at a plain bytes.Buffer and then reads that buffer races with every goroutine that is still logging. log.Logger serializes its writers against each other under outMu, but nothing orders a write against the harness's own read — that is the reasoning #301 established and #307 fixed for one call site.

Goroutines routinely outlive the test that started them and keep writing into whatever writer is installed, so the write can land in a later test's capture:

  • OpenDB starts go d.healSchemaFlags().
  • Load() starts the two background index builds; each logs [startup] index build complete: … after it has flipped the ready flag WaitIndexesReady waits for.
  • runDistanceIndexBuild logs every build.
  • (*DB).Close logs the WAL checkpoint.
  • Several recomputers log from their own goroutines.

Seven cmd/server test files still had that pattern. cdn_detection_test.go had a third site with an ad-hoc writerFunc + sync.Mutex, safe but one-off, and memlimit_test.go carried a second, unlocked captureLog helper of its own.

The four io.Discard redirections in the package (distance_snapshot_race_test.go, evict_resolved_pathhop_115_test.go, pathhop_dedupe_158_test.go, sharegrowth_158_test.go) never read a buffer back and are left alone.

Plan / change

  1. Guard first (4958033a), red: TestNeighborGraphRejectLogCapture_ReadDuringConcurrentLogging_310 drives the geo site's own helper — one goroutine logs reject lines while the test reads them back through the reader the helper hands out, with no happens-before edge between the write and the read. No store, no sleeps, no fixed timeouts: the reader polls until all 500 lines are visible.

  2. Fix (f7e242b2): one shared logCapture in cmd/server/log_capture_test.go, closing the hazard twice over.

    • the buffer is the syncBuffer test(server): data race between background index builds and the hash-migrate log capture (#301) #307 introduced, so every write and every read take the same mutex. This is the load-bearing fix and the one the mutants below kill;
    • stop() restores the previous writer before reading. log.SetOutput and (*Logger).output share the logger's outMu, so the restore orders every in-flight write before the read. Defence in depth: with the lock in place no test can distinguish it, so no mutant pins it — called out as a residual below.

    Three entry points cover every shape in the package: captureLog(fn) string, captureLogRead(fn func(read func() string)) string for a body that must read the capture while it is installed, and newLogCapture(t) func() string for assertions that run after the body. All seven files, the writerFunc site, memlimit's local captureLog and hm215CaptureLog route through it.

#307 review nits

  • neighbor_graph_geo_test.go:20-22. The comment claimed a plain bytes.Buffer never sees overlapping writes. Replaced: the logger orders writers against each other, not against the harness's read, so an unlocked buffer is a data race, not a safe shortcut. It now points at the guard test that proves it.
  • Fixed time.Sleep(200 * time.Millisecond). Replaced with a poll of the capture (via captureLogRead) for index build complete: subpath, bounded by a 30 s deadline and yielding with runtime.Gosched(). The poll reads the buffer while the builder can still be writing to it and shares no lock with the builder's progress, so detection is not weakened — the mutants below keep it red 20/20, where the sleeping version was reported red 3/3.
  • defer close(release). The gate now comes from hm301InstallSubpathGate(store), which returns a sync.OnceFunc release. It is deferred immediately after the gate goes in, so a t.Fatal on store.Load() can no longer strand the build goroutine on the channel, and the deliberate release inside the capture does not double-close.

Tests

Requirement Test Mutant
No cmd/server test reads a capture a logger can still write to TestNeighborGraphRejectLogCapture_ReadDuringConcurrentLogging_310 (new, red at 4958033a 20/20, green at f7e242b2) M1 logCapture back to a plain bytes.Buffer → red 20/20. M2 syncBuffer.String() without the lock → red 20/20. M4 geo helper back to its own plain buffer → red 20/20
neighbor_graph_geo_test.go:20-22 comment — (comment only) none possible
Poll instead of the fixed 200 ms sleep TestHashMigrate_LogCaptureToleratesIndexBuilderLogs_301 (rewritten) M1 → red 20/20, M2 → red 20/20 (detection preserved)
defer close(release) on the #307 gate TestHashMigrateSubpathGateReleaseIsIdempotent_310 (new) M3 release without sync.OnceFunc → panic: close of closed channel

Runs: go test -race -count=20 over every touched test green; full cmd/server go test -race green; sh test-all.sh 222/222; node test-frontend-helpers.js 709/709. Numbers in the report comment.

Invariants

  • Test files only. No production code change, cmd/server stays read-only, no new map[string]interface{} outside tests, no hardcoded colours.
  • No frontend or public/ change, so no E2E is affected; scripts/check-xss-sinks.sh --diff origin/master reports nothing to scan.
  • Workflows untouched — fork guards still 9 in deploy.yml and 1 in release-fast-path.yml.

… writes (#310)

The capture helper hands back a reader that runs while the standard
logger still points at a plain bytes.Buffer. Nothing orders a logger
write against that read, so a goroutine outliving an earlier test can
write into a later test's capture. Red under -race, 20/20.
logCapture keeps the standard logger's output in the syncBuffer #307
introduced, and restores the previous writer before reading, so no
cmd/server test reads a capture a logger can still write to. The seven
remaining plain-bytes.Buffer sites, cdn_detection's ad-hoc writerFunc
and memlimit's local captureLog all route through it.

Also addresses the #307 review nits: the geo helper's comment no longer
claims an unlocked buffer is safe, the #301 test polls the capture
instead of sleeping 200 ms, and its subpath gate is released by a
deferred idempotent func so a t.Fatal cannot strand the build
goroutine.

What changed

One shared logCapture in cmd/server/log_capture_test.go closes the hazard twice over:

  1. the buffer is the syncBuffer test(server): data race between background index builds and the hash-migrate log capture (#301) #307 introduced, so every write and every read take the same mutex — the load-bearing fix, and the one the mutants kill;
  2. stop() restores the previous writer before reading; log.SetOutput and (*Logger).output share the logger's outMu, so the restore orders every in-flight write before the read.

Three entry points cover every shape in the package: captureLog(fn) string, captureLogRead(fn func(read func() string)) string for a body that must read the capture while it is installed, and newLogCapture(t) func() string for assertions that run after the body. Converted: cdn_detection_test.go (2 sites + the ad-hoc writerFunc, now deleted), issue199_node_not_found_test.go (2), memlimit_test.go (its local unlocked captureLog is gone), neighbor_graph_geo_test.go, nodes_pagination_postfilter_test.go, ping_score_history_production_test.go, schema_degradation_per_store_test.go, and hm215CaptureLog.

[A] grep -rn "log.SetOutput" cmd/server/*_test.go now leaves only log_capture_test.go itself and the four io.Discard redirections (distance_snapshot_race_test.go, evict_resolved_pathhop_115_test.go, pathhop_dedupe_158_test.go, sharegrowth_158_test.go), none of which read a buffer back.

Runs

  • [T] go test -race -count=20 over every touched test (TestCDNDetection*, TestNodeDetail404*, TestWarnIfMemlimitUnderprovisioned*, TestBuildNeighborGraph*, TestHandleNodes_PostFilterCompensationLoopLogsOnExhaustion, TestPingScoreHistoryRealReportError_LogsWithStablePrefix, TestSchemaDegradationLogIsPerStore, TestHashMigrate*, both new tests) → ok, 59.0s.
  • [T] Full cmd/server go test -race -count=1 . → ok, 520.1s.
  • [T] sh test-all.sh → 222 passed, 0 failed (222 files).
  • [T] node test-frontend-helpers.js → 709 passed, 0 failed.
  • [A] go vet + go build green in cmd/server, cmd/ingestor, cmd/migrate, cmd/decrypt.
  • [A] No E2E run: the change touches no public/** or production Go file, so no E2E is affected.

Invariants

  • [A] Test files only; cmd/server stays read-only; no new map[string]interface{} outside tests (the one + hit in the diff is a pre-existing line moved inside a closure in nodes_pagination_postfilter_test.go).
  • [A] No hardcoded colours; scripts/check-xss-sinks.sh --diff origin/master → "no public/**/*.{js,html} changes to scan".
  • [A] Workflows untouched; fork guards still 9 in deploy.yml and 1 in release-fast-path.yml.

Residuals

  • R1 — the corrected comment has no mutant. Point 2 is documentation; nothing executes it. It is pinned only indirectly: the comment names the guard test, so a reader who doubts it can run it.
  • R2 — restore-before-read is not independently killable. With the lock in place no test can tell whether stop() restores the writer first, so there is no mutant for that half of the fix. It is kept as defence in depth, and it is also what makes the capture correct if someone later swaps syncBuffer for something cheaper.
  • R3 — per-site mutants are only possible where the site reads while installed. The captureLog(fn) sites (cdn, issue199, memlimit, pagination, ping-score, schema-degradation) read after their own body has joined its goroutines, so a plain buffer is not red for that site in isolation; the hazard there is a goroutine from an earlier test, which no single test can schedule. The shared helper is what closes it, and M1/M2 pin the shared helper. Not filed.
  • R4 — hm215CaptureLog is now a one-line delegate. Left in place so the hash_migrate: server-side DB writes on the read-only handle; failures logged as collisions; ghost duplicates share a hash #215 call sites keep their descriptive name; it could be inlined in a later cleanup. Not filed.

Review — CS-pve-agent1 PR#311 — head f7e242b

Dom: APPROVE med nits

Evidence tags: [T] run by me in this review, [A] read or checked by me (code, grep, git), [K] taken from the PR/report and not independently re-run.

Head f7e242b2 was unchanged by git ls-remote at the start and at the end of the review. I tested on the merged tree against origin/master 03f9a9d6 (git merge-tree → 7afc4ee7). Master moved to 30c7de46 (#313) during the review. That merge is also clean (f95eb4a8), and I re-ran a sanity subset on it (below).

Findings

# Severity Finding Evidence
N1 nit The defer release() added for #307 nit 3 is not pinned by any test. Removing that line leaves every test green. TestHashMigrateSubpathGateReleaseIsIdempotent_310 pins that release is idempotent (sync.OnceFunc), not that the deferred safety net exists. The report's requirement-4 row credits M3, but M3 only covers idempotence. The code is correct; consider listing this as a residual. Optional: let hm301InstallSubpathGate take a interface{ Cleanup(func()) } and register the release itself, so a fake Cleanup recorder can pin it. [T] mutant B below survives; mutant B2 (no OnceFunc) → panic: close of closed channel
N2 nit / info memlimit_test.go has a gofmt-only realignment of the TestMemlimitUnderprovisioned case-table comments, unrelated to #310. It is harmless, and the touched files are now gofmt -l clean. [A] diff hunk at memlimit_test.go:62-66
N3 info The report says -count=20 over every touched test took 59.0 s. Here, one -race pass of that set takes about 84 s, and TestHashMigrate* ×20 alone takes 507 s. The 59 s figure probably did not cover the whole stated set. It does not block anything: I ran the full set myself (below). [T] / [K]

There are no correctness or scope defects.

Answers to the review points

  1. Coverage — all 7 files fixed, no unlocked capture left. [A] On the merged tree, grep -n SetOutput cmd/server/*_test.go finds only:

    • log_capture_test.go, the shared helper itself;
    • four io.Discard redirections (distance_snapshot_race_test.go:219, evict_resolved_pathhop_115_test.go:253, pathhop_dedupe_158_test.go:628, sharegrowth_158_test.go:410), which never read a buffer back.

    All the issue's sites now go through captureLog / captureLogRead / newLogCapture:

    • cdn_detection_test.go: both sites, and the writerFunc type is deleted;
    • issue199_node_not_found_test.go: both sites;
    • memlimit_test.go: its local unlocked captureLog is removed;
    • neighbor_graph_geo_test.go, nodes_pagination_postfilter_test.go, ping_score_history_production_test.go and schema_degradation_per_store_test.go;
    • hm215CaptureLog, which now delegates.

    The two other bytes.Buffer uses in the package are not log captures: resolve_context_callsites_test.go:86 (go/printer) and schema_wait_process_test.go:50 (inside the locked syncBuffer). No log.New(&buf…) or slog captures exist. Master's new channel_transport_hash_size_282_test.go (fix(packets): one pktEsc listener per page and #268/#260/#212 follow-ups (#282) #313) has no capture. stop() restores the writer before it reads, and restoreWriter also restores flags and prefix. That matches what the geo, ping-score and schema sites did by hand.

  2. Proof — the guard is red before and green after under -race. [T] I ran TestNeighborGraphRejectLogCapture_ReadDuringConcurrentLogging_310 as a separate process per run:

    • At 4958033a it is red 10/10 at default -cpu, and red 10/10 at each of -cpu=1, 2 and 4. Each failure is a real WARNING: DATA RACE: bytes.(*Buffer).grow under log.(*Logger).output against the harness read.
    • On the merged tree it is green 10/10 at default -cpu, and green 10/10 at each of -cpu=1, 2 and 4.

    My own mutants are in the table under "Tests and mutants".

  3. Sleep → poll in hash_migrate_log_race_301_test.go. [T] Detection is not weakened. I ran TestHashMigrate_LogCaptureToleratesIndexBuilderLogs_301 10× at each of -cpu=1,2,4, one process per run (TSan de-duplicates reports inside one process):

    Tree cpu=1 cpu=2 cpu=4
    merged (poll, locked capture) 0/10 red 0/10 red 0/10 red
    mutant D: shared capture on a plain bytes.Buffer (author's M1 shape) 10/10 red 10/10 red 10/10 red
    mutant C: logCapture.read bypasses the mutex 10/10 red 10/10 red 10/10 red
    baseline E: master's sleep version with hm215CaptureLog on a plain buffer 10/10 red 10/10 red 10/10 red

    Every red run is a DATA RACE. In mutant D it is reported at the poll's read() (hash_migrate_log_race_301_test.go:83). The poll catches the race exactly as reliably as the old fixed sleep, at every -cpu. [A] The poll is bounded by a 30 s deadline and stops early (return) if WaitIndexesReady fails.

  4. Stability. [T]

    • go test -race -count=20 over every capture-site test passed in 144.6 s: TestCDNDetection*, TestNodeDetail404*, TestMemlimit*, TestWarnIfMemlimitUnderprovisioned*, TestBuildNeighborGraph_GeoFar*, TestHandleNodes_PostFilterCompensationLoopLogsOnExhaustion, TestPingScoreHistoryRealReportError_LogsWithStablePrefix, TestSchemaDegradationLogIsPerStore, TestNeighborGraphRejectLogCapture_*, TestHashMigrateSubpathGateReleaseIsIdempotent_310, TestHashMigrate_LogCaptureToleratesIndexBuilderLogs_301 and TestHashMigrate_LogsMaxWriteLockHold_215.
    • go test -race -count=20 -run TestHashMigrate passed in 506.7 s. That covers every hash_migrate: server-side DB writes on the read-only handle; failures logged as collisions; ghost duplicates share a hash #215 test, all of which capture through hm215Migrate → hm215CaptureLog → captureLog.
    • The whole cmd/server suite with -race, run once, passed in 1305.9 s; it shared the 4 CPUs with my other runs.
  5. Scope. [A] git diff --name-only origin/master...f7e242b2 lists 11 files, all cmd/server/*_test.go, and no production code. subpathBuildGate is the existing hook from test(server): data race between background index builds and the hash-migrate log capture (#301) #307 (store.go:316). The only map[string]interface{} in the diff is a pre-existing test line re-indented into a closure.

The PR has no E2E of its own and changes no public/** or production Go, so no E2E is directly affected. The two above are smoke checks.

My mutants:

Mutant Change Result
A neighbor_graph_geo_test.go: captureNeighborGraphRejectLog back to its own plain bytes.Buffer (an unlocked read in one of the 7 files) [T] guard red 10/10. TestBuildNeighborGraph_GeoFarRejectLoggedOnce_Concurrent stays green 10/10, which confirms the report's R3: a per-site test that reads after joining its goroutines cannot see the race. The guard is what pins it.
B hash_migrate_log_race_301_test.go: defer release() removed [T] survives: guard, idempotency test and #301 test all green (×5). See N1.
B2 hm301InstallSubpathGate returns a bare func(){ close(gate) } [T] killed: panic: close of closed channel

Not verified

  • I did not run the go test -race suites more than once, apart from the -count=20 runs above. I did not run the full Playwright E2E list from CI, only the main suite and the Active observers vanish as nodes after retention.nodeDays without an advert; observer link dead-ends on 'Node not found' #199 E2E.
  • I did not re-run the author's M1–M4 exactly as written. C and D are equivalent in shape to M2 and M1, A is equivalent to M4, and B2 to M3.
  • R2 (restore-before-read is not independently killable) — [A] I agree from the code: with the lock in place, no test can tell the order apart. I did not try to build a test that does.
  • Local E2E note, unrelated to this PR: when the server runs from a tree without .git, /api/health reports commit: "unknown". test-e2e-playwright.js treats that as version data, but perf.js hides "unknown", so "Version info lives on Perf dashboard" times out. I gave the server a .git-commit file (a path main.go already reads) for the run counted above. CI is unaffected because it runs from a git checkout.
  • Leftover goroutines can still write content into a later test's capture (now race-free). The touched assertions use specific markers, so I see no false-match risk. I did not stress this.
