Relates to #392

Follow-up to #333, carved out of PR #373. public/perf.js interpolated /api/perf values into innerHTML without escaping. The request-controlled sinks are the server-endpoints table key (unmatched /api/ routes collapse to the raw path, so a slow 404 under /api/ can carry markup) and the slow-query path (raw r.URL.Path, cmd/server/routes.go).

What changed

Frontend — public/perf.js

  • Added an IIFE-local escapeHtml that prefers app.js's canonical global and falls back to an identical 5-char OWASP escaper, so perf.js is safe both in the browser (uses the global) and when evaluated standalone (the perf-render unit-test sandboxes). The RHS reads globalThis.escapeHtml, never the bare name, to avoid a TDZ self-reference.
  • Escaped every interpolated string value: endpoint key (≈324), client path (≈334), slow-query path (≈345), write-source name + sampleAt, the server uptime string, and the error fallback. Numeric metrics typed number in the API spec are left as-is — they coerce and cannot carry markup.

Server — cmd/server/routes.go (read-only, no new map[string]interface{})

  • Normalised SlowQuery.Path via a pure normalizeSlowPath helper: pair the :id-folded route key with a control-char-stripped, rune-safe, length-capped (≤128 runes) copy of the raw path, matching the endpoint key's treatment and bounding the in-memory ring. It does not HTML-escape — the dashboard does that at render time. Documented in docs/api-spec.md.

Requirements → tests

All six unit tests drive the real extracted perf.js row templates via new Function (vm-style); the captured template matches pre- and post-fix, so the assertion — not the regex — flips. The E2E mocks /api/perf entirely in-browser with page.route (fixture DB untouched, nothing persisted, nothing leaves the machine) and judges "did any handler fire / any injected <img> / any dialog", not a string match. Wired into deploy.yml's Playwright step.

check-xss-sinks.sh

--diff origin/master is clean. The gate cannot flag perf.js's pre-fix pattern (verified: exits 0 on both the pre-fix and post-fix file): perf.js builds HTML via an html += \…`accumulator and does a singleel.innerHTML = html, while the per-line regex only treats .innerHTML/.outerHTML/.srcdocassignment/append lines as sinks — the node-controlled${…}interpolations live onhtml +=lines it never audits (andpath/q.path` are not in the node-controlled allowlist anyway). Modifying the gate's detection would diverge from its canonical skill-side mirror, so the unit + E2E tests (with mutants) are the regression guard instead.

Verification [T]=test [A]=API/served [K]=code/arch

  • node test-frontend-helpers.js → 712 passed, 0 failed [T]

  • test-xss-392-perf-e2e.js against a local Go server (port 13900, mocked /api/perf) → 1 passed; mutant (drop escaping) → 1 failed as expected [T][A]
  • go test . in cmd/server → ok (43s); go test -race on perf/slow-path tests → ok [T]
  • scripts/check-xss-sinks.sh --diff origin/master → clean [K]
  • Fork-guards unchanged: 9 in deploy.yml, 1 in release-fast-path.yml [K]

Follow-up to #333, carved out of PR #373. public/perf.js interpolated
/api/perf values into innerHTML without escaping. The request-controlled
sinks are the server-endpoints table key (unmatched /api/ routes collapse
to the raw path) and the slow-query path (raw r.URL.Path at
cmd/server/routes.go), so a slow 404 under /api/ could carry markup.

Frontend (public/perf.js):
- Add an IIFE-local escapeHtml that prefers app.js's canonical global and
falls back to an identical 5-char OWASP escaper, so perf.js is safe both
in the browser and when evaluated standalone (perf-render unit sandboxes).
- Escape every interpolated string value: endpoint key, client path and
slow-query path (the three row tables), write-source name + sampleAt,
server uptime string, and the error fallback. Numeric metrics typed
`number` in api-spec.md are left as-is (they coerce, cannot carry markup).

Server (cmd/server/routes.go, read-only, no new map[string]interface{}):
- Normalise SlowQuery.Path via a pure normalizeSlowPath helper: pair the
  :id-folded route key with a control-char-stripped, rune-safe,
length-capped (<=128 runes) raw path, matching the endpoint key's
treatment and bounding the in-memory ring. It does NOT HTML-escape — the
dashboard does that at render time. Documented in docs/api-spec.md.

Tests (red before, green after; one mutant each):
- test-xss-escape-sinks.js: 6 hostile-string unit tests driving the real
extracted perf.js row templates via new Function (vm-style), asserting the
<img> payload is escaped; dropping escapeHtml flips them red.
- test-xss-392-perf-e2e.js: full-page #/perf E2E against a LOCAL Go server
  with /api/perf mocked in-browser (page.route) to a hostile endpoint key +
slow-query path; asserts no injected <img>, no onerror, no dialog, and the
payloads render as inert text. Wired into deploy.yml's Playwright step.
- cmd/server/perf_slowpath_392_test.go: table tests for normalizeSlowPath
  (template+raw, unmatched dedupe, rune-safe cap, control-char strip,
no-escape); removing the cap flips the long-path case red.

check-xss-sinks.sh cannot flag perf.js's pre-fix pattern: perf builds HTML
via an `html += ` accumulator and does one `el.innerHTML = html`, and the
per-line regex only treats `.innerHTML/.outerHTML/.srcdoc` assignment lines
as sinks, so the node-controlled ${...} interpolations on `html +=` lines
are never audited. The unit + E2E tests (with mutants) are the regression
guard instead.

Rapport — CS-MacBook PR#394 #392 — head 37ebc67

Status: Done — draft PR open, CI fully green (incl. the new #392 E2E in CI); no outstanding failures.

Requirements → test + mutant

# Requirement Test (red before → green after) Mutant → red
1 Escape endpoint key (perf.js ≈324) test-xss-escape-sinks.js #392 perf endpoints table [T] drop escapeHtml(path) → raw <img> survives (verified)
2 Escape client path (≈334) test-xss-escape-sinks.js #392 perf client-calls table [T] drop escapeHtml(s.path)
3 Escape slow-query path (≈345) test-xss-escape-sinks.js #392 perf slow-queries table [T] drop escapeHtml(q.path)
4 Every other sink (write-source name, sampleAt, uptime) test-xss-escape-sinks.js 3 further #392 cases [T] drop each escapeHtml(...)

6 Server-side SlowQuery.Path normalisation (routes.go, read-only) cmd/server/perf_slowpath_392_test.go [T] neutralise the length cap → long-path case red (verified)

All six unit tests drive the real extracted perf.js row templates via new Function (vm-style); the captured template matches both pre- and post-fix, so the assertion flips, not the regex. The E2E mocks /api/perf entirely in-browser with page.route — fixture DB untouched, nothing persisted, nothing leaves the machine — and judges "did any handler fire / any injected <img> / any dialog".

Mandatory checks

  • cmd/server read-only; no new map[string]interface{} outside tests. normalizeSlowPath is a pure string transform. [K]
  • No hardcoded colours (no colour touched). [K]
  • scripts/check-xss-sinks.sh --diff origin/master → clean. [K]
  • Fork-guards unchanged: 9 in deploy.yml, 1 in release-fast-path.yml. [K]

check-xss-sinks.sh and the pre-fix pattern

The gate cannot flag perf.js's pre-fix pattern (verified: exit 0 on both pre- and post-fix perf.js). perf.js accumulates HTML into a local html via html += \…`and does a singleel.innerHTML = html; the per-line regex only treats .innerHTML/.outerHTML/.srcdocassignment/append lines as sinks, so the node-controlled${…}interpolations onhtml +=lines are never audited (andpath/q.path` are not in the node-controlled allowlist). Changing the gate's detection would diverge from its canonical skill-side mirror, so the unit + E2E tests (with mutants) are the regression guard. Documented in the PR body and commit message.

CI per job (run 38331317579)

Job Result
Go Build & Test (incl. go server build+test, test-all.sh 235/235, Preflight XSS --diff, eslint no-undef) ✅ success [T][K]
Playwright E2E Tests (incl. test-xss-392-perf-e2e.js → 1 passed, 0 failed) ✅ success [T][A]
Build & Publish Docker Image ✅ success
Release Artifacts / Deploy Staging / Publish Badges ⏭️ skipped (fork-guarded)

No flaky #271 occurrence; no re-run needed.

Local verification

  • node test-xss-escape-sinks.js → 62/0 [T]
  • node test-frontend-helpers.js → 712/0 [T]
  • sh test-all.sh → 235/235 [T]
  • test-xss-392-perf-e2e.js vs local Go server (port 13900, mocked /api/perf) → 1 passed; mutant → red [T][A]
  • go test . in cmd/server → ok; go test -race on perf/slow-path → ok [T]

Remainders

  • None blocking. The server-side normalisation is additive defense-in-depth (length cap + consistency with the endpoint key); the frontend escaping alone already neutralises the XSS.

Review — CS-Macmini PR#394 — head 37ebc67

Dom: APPROVE med nits

Independent, read-only review. Verified against origin/master 6f339fda (merges clean, git merge-tree exit 0); head sha identical before and after the review. Evidence tags: [T] test run, [A] API/browser observed, [K] code/config read.

Findings

# Sev Where Finding
F1 nit (scope) public/perf.js 12 interpolated values are still unescaped. All are number-typed in the Go structs, so none is request-controlled today — but hostile values placed in them do inject, verified per field in a browser [A]. The issue's criterion is "escape every interpolated perf value", and the PR itself escapes numeric fields (s.count, s.avgMs, q.ms, q.status, …) in the three tables while leaving these out, so the stated "numbers are left as-is" rule does not match the code.
F2 nit public/perf.js:104-110 The IIFE-local fallback escaper is never exercised by any test. Replacing its whole body with the identity function keeps test-xss-escape-sinks.js 62/0 and sh test-all.sh 235/235 green [T]. The unit helper evalTemplate injects app.js's escapeHtml into the sandbox, so a weakened perf.js-local escaper goes unnoticed — the exact rule test-xss-escape-sinks.js:67 documents as "#333 F5". In the browser the fallback is unreachable (app.js is loaded first, index.html:192 vs :250) [K], so this is dead-but-shipped code rather than an exposure.
F3 nit cmd/server/routes.go:1391-1427 The 128-rune cap does not bound the stored value. Only the raw half is capped; the key half is passed through uncapped. normalizeSlowPath(key, "/api/deadbeef12/" + 5000×"z") stores 5139 runes [T]. The PR body's "bounding the in-memory ring" and api-spec's "length-capped (≤128 runes + …)" are therefore both inaccurate for unmatched routes that contain a hex run.
F4 nit cmd/server/routes.go + docs/api-spec.md:352 Control characters are stripped from the raw half only. normalizeSlowPath on a path holding CR/LF returns "/api/\r\nX-Injected: 1/:id /api/X-Injected: 1/deadbeef12" — CR/LF survive in the key half [T]. The spec line "Control characters are stripped." overstates what the helper does.
F5 nit (criterion) scripts/check-xss-sinks.sh Issue criterion "Make sure check-xss-sinks.sh covers these sinks" is not met. Confirmed independently: the full gate reports 0 perf.js findings on both the pre-fix and the post-fix file [T][K]. The PR documents the reason (the per-line regex only audits .innerHTML/.outerHTML/.srcdoc assignment lines, not the html += accumulator) and substitutes unit+E2E tests, which do hold — but the gate stays blind to a future regression here.
F6 nit docs/api-spec.md SlowQuery is also serialised on GET /api/health as perf.recentSlow[] (routes.go:967-1013) [K], so that field gains the same "<template> <raw>" shape. Only the /api/perf block was documented; the recentSlow block at api-spec.md:315 still describes a plain path.
F7 nit public/perf.js:374 The error fallback escapeHtml(err.message) is the one newly escaped sink with no test. It is not purely internal: a /api/perf body that is not valid JSON makes Chrome's JSON.parse message embed the first bytes of the response, so this sink is attacker-influenced in the same way the others are. Escaping it is right; it is simply the one case the six new unit tests skip.
F8 nit (pre-existing) public/perf.js:374 Same line still carries a hardcoded style="color:red" instead of a token. Pre-existing, but the line is touched by this PR.

F1 detail — per-field browser isolation on head, hostile value injected one field at a time into a mocked /api/perf / /api/health / /api/perf/write-sources, each run asserting on img[src="x"] + an onerror counter [A]:

  • inert (fixed by this PR): endpoints[key], endpoints[].count, slowQueries[].path, slowQueries[].status, health.uptimeHuman, health.version, health.commit, writeSources.sampleAt, writeSources.sources[key]
  • still injects: totalRequests, avgMs, cache.size, cache.hitRate, packetStore.trackedMB, packetStore.indexes.byObserver, sqlite.dbSizeMB, sqlite.walPages.busy, goRuntime.goroutines, goRuntime.numCPU, health.websocket.clients, writeSources.sources[value]

All twelve are int/int64/float64 in cmd/server/types.go and perf_io.go (sources is map[string]int64) [K], so there is no request-controlled path into them from this server. Treat F1 as consistency + defence-in-depth, not as a live hole.

The review points

Coverage — are all interpolated values escaped by context? Grepped all 70 ${…} sites in the 405-line file [K]. Every string-typed sink the dashboard renders is escaped: endpoint key (:338), client path (:349), slow-query path and time (:359), write-source name (:242), sampleAt (:246), uptimeHuman (:137), err.message (:374). health.version/commit were already escaped by renderVersionCard's own esc() (:84, pre-existing, confirmed inert [A]). The remaining 12 numeric sinks are F1. Attribute contexts are safe: every style="color:${…}" interpolates a locally computed ternary over literal CSS-var names, never API data [K].

Server-side SlowQuery.Path normalisation. Correct in its main purpose, pure and read-only — normalizeSlowPath builds a string and touches nothing else; cmd/server gains no writes and no new map[string]interface{} (diff grep: none) [K]. It deliberately does not HTML-escape, which is the right split and is pinned by a test. Tested (7 subtests) and documented. Two accuracy gaps: F3 (cap not binding) and F4 (control chars not stripped in the key half). One nit on the shape: the two halves are joined by a space, and a decoded r.URL.Path may itself contain a space, so the field is not unambiguously splittable — fine for a dashboard, worth knowing if anything ever parses it.

Behaviour change beyond the purpose. SlowQuery.Path changes shape from the raw path to "<route template> <capped raw>" on both /api/perf and /api/health. That is what the issue asked for ("the route template plus a truncated, sanitised raw path"), and perf.js is the only consumer [K]. One cosmetic side effect: a null/missing numeric in a now-escaped cell renders "" instead of "undefined" (escapeHtml returns '' for nullish) — an improvement, not a regression.

Mandatory checks. cmd/server read-only ✓ [K] · no new map[string]interface{} ✓ [K] · no new hardcoded colours (F8 is a pre-existing one on a touched line) ✓ [K] · scripts/check-xss-sinks.sh --diff origin/master clean, exit 0 ✓ [T] · fork-guards 9 in deploy.yml / 1 in release-fast-path.yml ✓ [K] · no closing keywords in the commit message or the PR body ✓ [K] · commit author and committer both dborup <kontakt@meshview.dk>, single commit ✓ [K] · npx eslint public/*.js 0 errors ✓ [T].

Acceptance criteria → test. Each of the three sinks named in the issue has a dedicated unit test plus the E2E, red before and green after (mutants below). The criterion "make the gate cover these sinks" is the one not met — F5.

Tests run (merged tree = origin/master + head, in scratch)

Run Result

CI run 38331317579 on this exact head, checked per job: Go Build & Test ✅, Playwright E2E ✅ (log confirms #392 perf E2E: 1 passed, 0 failed), Docker ✅, three release/deploy jobs skipped by the fork guard [T]. No #256 or #267 occurrence; no re-run needed.

Mutants

Author's six frontend mutants reproduced, each killing exactly one test and nothing else [T]:

Mutant Result
drop escapeHtml(path) (endpoints key) 61/1 — #392 perf endpoints table red
drop escapeHtml(s.path) (client path) 61/1 — #392 perf client-calls table red
drop escapeHtml(q.path) (slow-query path) 61/1 — #392 perf slow-queries table red
drop escapeHtml(k) (write-source name) 61/1 — #392 perf write-sources table red
drop escapeHtml(writeSources.sampleAt) 61/1 — #392 perf write-sources footer red
drop escapeHtml(health ? health.uptimeHuman …) 61/1 — #392 perf overview red

E2E mutant (drop both sink escapes, server restarted on the mutated file): #392 perf E2E: 0 passed, 1 failed — perf dashboard: 2 injected <img>, 2 handler call(s), 0 dialog(s) — exactly the author's claim [T][A].

Own mutants beyond the author's:

# Mutant Expected Actual
X1 weaken the perf.js-local fallback escaper (drop the ' → &#39; rule) red survives — 62/0 [T] → F2
X2 replace the perf.js-local fallback escaper with the identity function red survives — 62/0 and test-all.sh 235/235 [T] → F2
X3 widen slowPathRawCap 128 → 4096 red killed — long raw is capped red [T]
X4 drop the key == raw dedupe branch red killed — two subtests red [T]
X5 remove the length cap (author's stated mutant, reproduced) red killed [T]
X6 remove the control-char strip red killed [T]

Two direct probes (no mutation, head code as-is) back F3 and F4 [T]:
normalizeSlowPath("/api/:id/"+5000×"z", "/api/deadbeef12/"+5000×"z") → 5139 runes; normalizeSlowPath on a CR/LF path → "/api/\r\nX-Injected: 1/:id /api/X-Injected: 1/deadbeef12".

Browser check

Own Playwright script against the local Go server, #/perf, three scenarios [A]:

  1. hostile strings in every string-typed field (endpoint key, slow-query path, uptimeHuman, version, commit, sampleAt, write-source name) → 0 injected <img>, 0 onerror calls, 0 dialogs; payloads present as inert text; 4 tables and 52 cards render.
  2. hostile strings in the number-typed fields → 22 injected <img> and 22 handler calls → F1.
  3. real data, no mocking → 51 cards, 2 tables, 0 page errors, overview intact. The dashboard behaves normally.

Not verified

  • Staging or production — not touched; everything ran against a local server on port 13800 with the committed fixture, and no API key was used.
  • The remaining ~40 Playwright E2Es in deploy.yml (ran only the security(ui): escape perf dashboard values (raw slow-query path) in perf.js #392 and the two security(ui): escape untrusted node, observer and route values in HTML rendering #333 suites); CI covers the rest and is green on this head.
  • Whether the canonical skill-side mirror of check-xss-sinks.sh could be extended to see html += accumulators — the PR's argument for not touching the gate is about that mirror, which is outside this repo.
  • /api/perf/io and /api/perf/sqlite were left unmocked in scenario 1/3 and only partially covered in the isolation sweep; their values all flow through fmtRate/Math.round/toFixed, which coerce.
  • Long-run or concurrency behaviour of the slow-query ring under the new path shape beyond the existing -race suite.

…est local escaper (#392)

Round-2 review follow-ups on PR #394:

- F1: escape every API-sourced interpolation in perf.js (all numeric cards
across overview, Go runtime, system health, cache, packet store, SQLite,
write sources), not only the three table paths. Defence in depth: these
are number-typed server-side today, so not request-controlled, but the
issue criterion is to escape EVERY interpolated perf value. Values passed
  through Math.round / unary-+ / toFixed / fmtRate, local computed vars, and
the JS array .length are left as-is (a hostile string there coerces to NaN
  or is engine-computed, never markup).
- F2: the IIFE-local escapeHtml fallback in perf.js is now driven directly
from source by a unit test; an identity mutant on it flips red.
- F3: normalizeSlowPath sanitises AND caps BOTH halves (route key + raw
path), so the whole stored value is bounded regardless of a long template
key, not just the raw half.
- F4: control characters (incl. CR/LF/TAB) are stripped from both halves.
- F5: documented concretely in check-xss-sinks.sh why the name-based,
same-line gate cannot see perf.js's html-accumulator sinks (and why the
generic locals path/q.path/k cannot be allowlisted) — the DOM-grep unit
tests + browser E2E are the regression guard instead.
- F6: documented the shared SlowQuery shape under GET /api/health
  perf.recentSlow[] and corrected the /api/perf length-cap wording.

Tests: perf_slowpath_392_test.go gains two subtests (long template key is
bounded; control chars stripped from the key half). test-xss-escape-sinks.js
gains the F2 fallback test and five F1 numeric-card tests. All red before the
fix, green after; one mutant per finding.

Rapport — CS-MacBook PR#394 runde-2 — head fa441cb

Review feedback addressed (commit fa441cb7). Branch merged origin/master (85b6096b) in via merge commit 94f8777a before the fix; only the six intended files changed in fa441cb7. Evidence tags: [T] test run, [A] browser/E2E observed, [K] code/config read.

  1. F5 — gate coverage (criterion). Took the "document honestly" branch, because extending the gate is not sound here, and documented the concrete pattern in scripts/check-xss-sinks.sh itself (not only the PR). Two independent reasons perf.js's pre-fix sinks are invisible to the name-based, same-line gate, both now spelled out in the script header: (a) perf.js builds HTML into a local via html += \…${path}…`and does oneel.innerHTML = html; the only .innerHTML =line carries the bare identifierhtml, so the per-line audit sees no field, and html += lines are not sinks; (b) the values flow through generically-named locals (path, q.path, the write-source key k) that are **not** in the node-controlled allowlist and cannot be added without a false-positive explosion (path, and especially single-letter k, appear all over public/*.js), and extending detection would diverge from the canonical skill-side mirror + shared allowlist. Verified empirically: check-xss-sinks.sh --fileon the **pre-fix**perf.jsexits 0 (no findings) despite the live XSS [T][K]. The DOM-grep unit tests + browser E2E (each with a mutant) are the regression guard.--diff origin/master` stays clean, exit 0 [T].

  2. F3 — cap the whole stored value. normalizeSlowPath now sanitises and caps both halves (route key + raw path) via a shared sanitizeSlowPathComponent; the total is bounded at ≤ 2×128 runes (+ per-half ellipsis + the join space) regardless of a long template key. Test (red→green): perf_slowpath_392_test.go → long template key is also capped (total value is bounded) with key = "/api/:id/"+5000×"z". Mutant = sanitise/cap only the raw half (the pre-fix code) → 5139 runes (max 259) red [T].

  3. F4 — strip control chars from both halves. Same shared helper strips ASCII controls (incl. CR/LF/TAB) from the key half too. Test (red→green): control characters are stripped from the key half too with key = "/api/\r\nX-Injected: 1/:id". Mutant = strip raw half only (pre-fix) → CR/LF survive in the key half, red [T].

  4. F2 — IIFE-local fallback escaper is now tested. test-xss-escape-sinks.js → #394 F2 perf.js local escapeHtml fallback escapes (identity mutant → red) drives the real const escapeHtml = <ternary> straight from source: with no global escapeHtml it exercises the IIFE-local fallback (5-char OWASP set + null + a full payload), and it asserts the selector prefers globalThis.escapeHtml when present. Mutant = replace the fallback body with return s; → #394 F2: fallback did not escape <, red (verified: 67/1) [T].

  5. F1 — escape every interpolated perf value (defence in depth). The review named 12; that was an undercount from a Go-server isolation sweep. The same raw-interpolation pattern affects every API-sourced card (overview, Go runtime, System Health/Node branch, Disk I/O labels, Write Sources value, SQLite feat(perf): expose per-component disk I/O + write source metrics on Perf page Kpa-clawbot/CoreScope#1120, Cache, Packet Store, SQLite) — e.g. c.hits/c.misses, gr.numGC, m.*/el.* (Node branch, untested by the Go-only sweep), sq.walSizeMB, ps.maxMB, etc. To actually be consistent I escaped all of them, not just the 12. Left as-is, with justification: values through Math.round(...), unary +, toFixed(...), fmtRate(...) (a hostile string there → NaN, never markup), the color-ternaries (literal CSS-var names), local computed vars (clientCache, total), and server.slowQueries.length (a JS array length — engine-computed integer). Audit grep confirms ${server.slowQueries.length} is the only non-escaped, non-coerced interpolation left [K]. Tests (red→green): five #394 F1 card cases (totalRequests, c.size, gr.goroutines, sq.walPages.busy, ps.indexes.byObserver), each hostile-payload driven via the real source template. Mutant = drop escapeHtml(c.size) → #394 F1 cache: c.size card is escaped red (67/1) [T].

  6. F6 — document the shared SlowQuery shape on /api/health. docs/api-spec.md GET /api/health → perf.recentSlow[].path now documents the same "<route template> <capped raw>" shape as GET /api/perf → slowQueries[]. Also corrected the /api/perf wording (F3/F4): both halves are control-stripped and ≤128 runes each; total ≤ 257 [K].

Out of scope (per the task, F1–F6 only): F7 (escapeHtml(err.message) untested) and F8 (hardcoded style="color:red") were left untouched.

Tests, mutants (one per finding)

Finding Test (red before → green after) Mutant → red
F1 test-xss-escape-sinks.js 5× #394 F1 … [T] drop escapeHtml(c.size) → #394 F1 cache red (67/1) [T]
F2 test-xss-escape-sinks.js #394 F2 … [T] identity fallback body → #394 F2 red (67/1) [T]
F3 perf_slowpath_392_test.go long-template-key [T] cap raw half only → 5139 runes red [T]
F4 perf_slowpath_392_test.go control-chars-key-half [T] strip raw half only → CR/LF survive red [T]
F5 --file on pre-fix perf.js exits 0 (documented gap) [T][K] n/a — documentation finding; demonstrated empirically
E2E test-xss-392-perf-e2e.js (local Go server :13900, /api/perf mocked in-browser) → 1 passed [T][A] revert the 2 request-controlled sink escapes → 2 injected <img>, 2 handler call(s), red [T][A]

Local verification

  • node test-xss-escape-sinks.js → 68/0 [T]
  • node test-frontend-helpers.js → 712/0 [T]
  • go test ./... in cmd/server → ok (43s); TestNormalizeSlowPath all subtests green; flake-check -count=3 on TestTrackedBytes_MixedSequenceDoesNotDrift_113 → ok [T]
  • sh test-all.sh → 235 passed, 1 failed. The one failure is test-backup-sqlite-safety.js (9 subtests "missing tool setsid"), a macOS-only environment limitation — setsid is Linux-only; the test arrived via the master merge (fix(ops): restart after failed backups and stop hiding WAL copy errors #362, 080fa57f) and is unrelated to this PR. It passes on CI (Linux): the Go/JS job is green (below) [T][K].
  • test-xss-392-perf-e2e.js + test-xss-333-pages-e2e.js (11/0) + test-xss-333-e2e.js (8/0) vs local Go server on :13900 (fixture prepped as in deploy.yml: freshen → Packets page collapse button in the left column of the table opens the dialog. Kpa-clawbot/CoreScope#1486 seed → corescope-migrate → seeds 2073/199/245) → all pass [T][A]
  • scripts/check-xss-sinks.sh --diff origin/master → clean, exit 0 [T]; npx eslint public/*.js → 0 errors [T]
  • cmd/server read-only (no new writes); normalizeSlowPath stays a pure string transform; no new map[string]interface{}; no colours touched; fork-guards unchanged (9 in deploy.yml, 1 in release-fast-path.yml) [K]

CI per job (run 38338509061, head fa441cb)

Job Result
✅ Go Build & Test (go server/ingestor, test-all.sh, Preflight XSS --diff, eslint) success [T][K]
🎭 Playwright E2E Tests (incl. test-xss-392-perf-e2e.js) success [T][A]
🏗️ Build & Publish Docker Image success
📦 Release Artifacts / 🚀 Deploy Staging / 📝 Publish Badges skipped (fork-guarded)

Note on the first run: Go Build & Test initially failed on a single unrelated test, TestTrackedBytes_MixedSequenceDoesNotDrift_113 (packet-store memory-drift, GC/timing-sensitive, not in this PR's touched files; passes locally -count=3). Not one of the known #271/#301 flakes, but handled the same way — re-ran the failed job once, and it (and the whole pipeline) went green. No source change was needed.

Review — CS-Macmini PR#394 — head fa441cb

Dom: APPROVE med nits

Independent, read-only round-3 re-review of round-2 head fa441cb7. Verified against origin/master f60d963d; git merge-tree --write-tree exits 0 and yields e646ac15, reproduced independently by a real clone merge (e646ac15, identical). Head sha unchanged before and after the review. Evidence tags: [T] test run, [A] browser/API observed, [K] code/config read.

All six round-1 findings (F1–F6) are closed or honestly documented. The security fix itself is real and I proved it independently: the same hostile-data browser sweep gives 38 injected <img> + 38 fired handlers on the pre-fix perf.js and 0 on this head [A].

Findings

# Sev Where Finding
N1 nit docs/api-spec.md:362 The total bound is documented as ≤257 runes; the real bound is 259 — each half caps at 128 runes plus an ellipsis rune, plus the join space. Measured: normalizeSlowPath("/api/:id/"+5000×"z", "/api/deadbeef12/"+5000×"z") → 259 runes [T]; the PR's own test uses 2*slowPathRawCap + 3 = 259. api-spec.md:318's "≤128-rune-per-half" has the same off-by-one (129 with the ellipsis). Exactly the class of doc-vs-code drift F3/F4 existed to fix.
N2 nit PR description The PR body is still the round-1 text and now contradicts the code at this head: "Numeric metrics typed number … are left as-is" (round 2 escapes all ~30 of them), "length-capped (≤128 runes) copy of the raw path" (round 2 caps both halves), test-xss-escape-sinks.js → "62 passed" (now 68), sh test-all.sh → "235/235" (now 235 of 236 files). The requirements table lists six rows and none of the F1–F6 work. All round-2 information lives only in a PR comment. [K]
N3 nit scripts/check-xss-sinks.sh:51 The second justification in the new header block — the generic locals path/q.path/k "cannot be added without a false-positive explosion" — does not hold empirically in this repo. I put path, q.path and k in the allowlist and re-ran --file over all 80 public/**/*.{js,html} files on master: exactly one extra finding (route-view.js:839, a genuine false positive — k is a .map() index), total 4 findings vs 3 [T]. Not a flood. The first reason (the html += accumulator is structurally invisible to a per-line regex) is accurate and fully carries the conclusion, so the fix is to soften the wording, not to touch the gate.
N4 nit (test gap) cmd/server/routes.go:1430 The DEL (0x7f) half of the control-char strip is unpinned. Mutant: if r < 0x20 || r == 0x7f → if r < 0x20 leaves the whole cmd/server suite green [T]. The CR/LF/TAB half is pinned twice.
N5 nit (test gap) public/perf.js:146-320 Only 5 of the ~30 newly escaped numeric cards have a test. Mutant: drop escapeHtml(m.rss) (perf.js:166, the health Node branch — a branch no unit test enters) → test-xss-escape-sinks.js 68/0 and test-frontend-helpers.js 712/0 both stay green [T]. Defence-in-depth escaping with 1-in-6 coverage; the five representative cases do cover five distinct response objects, so this is a known trade-off, not an oversight.
N6 nit (carried F7/F8, declared out of scope) public/perf.js:374 escapeHtml(err.message) is still the one newly escaped sink with no test — mutant (drop the wrapper) leaves 68/0 green [T]. It is attacker-influenced: I served a non-JSON /api/perf body starting with <img src=x onerror=…> and Chrome's JSON.parse message embedded it; on this head it renders inert (0 injections) [A], so the code is right and only the test is missing. Same line still carries the hardcoded style="color:red" (pre-existing — master:360).
N7 nit cmd/server/routes.go:1392 The cap's rationale names "a long query string" — r.URL.Path never contains the query string. Verified live: 60 concurrent /api/packets?limit=2000 requests crossed 100 ms and stored path = "/api/packets", no query [A]. Repeated/padded path segments are the real vector; the comment overstates the threat model.
N8 note cmd/server/routes.go:1428-1436 The strip covers ASCII controls only, so U+2028/U+2029 (line/paragraph separator), U+0085 (NEL) and U+202E (RTL override) survive in both halves — measured "/api/a
b /api/c
de‮f" [T]. Harmless in the HTML text context perf.js uses (verified escaped and inert), and out of scope for #392; it would matter if this value ever landed in a JS string literal or a log line.
N9 note (CI) run 38338509061 Attempt 1 failed on TestTrackedBytes_MixedSequenceDoesNotDrift_113 with database is locked (5) (SQLITE_BUSY) at tracked_bytes_accounting_113_test.go:457 [T]. The round-2 report characterises it as "packet-store memory-drift, GC/timing-sensitive" — the actual cause is SQLite lock contention under the parallel suite, which matters if anyone files it. Not #256 or #267, not a touched file; re-run once → attempt 2 fully green. Unfiled.

The review points

F5 — does the gate now catch perf.js's pre-fix sinks? No, and the reason is honest and documented. Independently confirmed: check-xss-sinks.sh --file exits 0 with zero findings on the pre-fix perf.js (live XSS) and on the post-fix one [T]. Scanning all 80 public/** files on plain master gives 2 files with findings (bottom-nav.js, nav-drawer.js — pre-existing setAttribute('href', hash)), perf.js in neither [T]. The mechanism in the new header block is exactly right and I verified it against the Python core: ASSIGN_SINK_RE requires .innerHTML/.outerHTML/.srcdoc, so html += \…${path}…`is not a sink, and the singleel.innerHTML = htmlline carries a bare identifier with no interpolation to audit [K]. The blind spot is **systemic, not perf-specific**: 9 of thepublic/*.js files use the accumulator-plus-bare-assign shape (analytics.jsalone has 110 such lines) [K], and the pre-existing header already said "Closing this gap needs data flow, not a line regex" — so the new text is a concrete instance of an already-declared limitation, not a new excuse. **No new false positives**: the gate's logic is untouched (the 22 added lines are all inside the#comment block) and--diff origin/master` is clean [T]. The only overstatement is N3. Substituting the DOM-grep unit tests + browser E2E is sound, and both do hold (below).

F3 — is the whole stored value bounded? Yes. sanitizeSlowPathComponent now caps and strips both halves. My own probe: the round-1 blocker case went from 5139 runes → 259 [T]. Mutant (sanitise/cap the raw half only = pre-fix code) → stored value not bounded: 5139 runes (max 259) red [T]. Doc bound is off by 2 → N1.

F4 — are CR and LF gone from both halves? Yes. My round-1 probe normalizeSlowPath("/api/\r\nX-Injected: 1/:id", …) now returns "/api/X-Injected: 1/:id /api/X-Injected: 2/deadbeef12" with ContainsAny(got, "\r\n") == false, and the same for NUL/ESC/DEL [T]. Mutant (strip raw half only) → the key-half subtest goes red [T]. DEL alone is unpinned → N4.

F2 — is an identity mutant of the fallback escaper red? Yes. Two of my own mutants kill the new test: replacing the fallback body with return s; → #394 F2: fallback did not escape <, 67/1 [T]; and forcing the selector to always take the fallback ((false) as the condition) → #394 F2: selector did not prefer globalThis.escapeHtml when present, 67/1 [T]. The test drives the real const escapeHtml = <ternary> source through new Function and fails loudly if the regex ever stops matching, so it cannot silently rot. The globalThis.escapeHtml RHS (no bare self-reference → no TDZ) is correct, and app.js:192 still loads before perf.js:250 so the browser always gets the canonical global [K].

F1 — are the numeric values escaped? Yes, all of them, and the exclusions are justified. I classified every interpolation site in the 405-line file at this head [K]: the only non-escaped, non-coerced interpolation left is ${server.slowQueries.length} (a JS array length) plus ${renderVersionCard(health)} (deliberate HTML, itself escaped by its own esc()), the color ternaries over literal var(--status-*) names, and locals (cls, total, clientCache, *Warn, *Flag, rateStr, baseStr). Everything through Math.round / unary + / toFixed / fmtRate coerces — confirmed empirically, not just by reading: with every /api/perf/io field hostile the page renders NaN B/s and stays inert [A]. Round-1's "12 fields" was indeed an undercount; the Node-branch fields (m.*, el.*) were invisible to a Go-server sweep. Test coverage of the new escaping is thin → N5.

F6 — is /api/health → perf.recentSlow[] documented? Yes. api-spec.md:315-322 now carries the shared-shape note, and there is exactly one normalizeSlowPath call site (routes.go:510, in perfMiddleware), so both endpoints provably share the value [K]. Verified live: after inducing 20 real slow queries I read the identical path/ms/time/status rows from /api/perf → slowQueries[] and /api/health → perf.recentSlow[] [A]. I could not land a parameterised slow route locally, so the live rows all show the deduped single-half form; the two-half form is pinned by unit tests instead.

Browser check of #/perf with hostile data. My own Playwright sweep against a local Go server (port 13800, fixture prepared as in deploy.yml), one perf endpoint made hostile per scenario so the other blocks still render, counting img[src="x"], an onerror counter, any on* attribute, dialogs and page errors [A]:

Scenario (hostile endpoint) pre-fix perf.js this head
/api/perf — endpoint key, slow path, numeric cards 24 injected <img>, 24 handler calls, 24 on* attrs 0 / 0 / 0
/api/health — version, commit, uptimeHuman, ws.clients 2 / 2 / 2 0 / 0 / 0
/api/health Node branch — memory + eventLoop 7 / 7 / 7 0 / 0 / 0
/api/perf/io — byte rates + syscalls 0 (coerced to NaN) 0
/api/perf/sqlite — page/row/WAL fields 2 / 2 / 2 0 / 0 / 0
/api/perf/write-sources — name, value, sampleAt 3 / 3 / 3 0 / 0 / 0

Totals: 38 injections pre-fix → 0 at this head, 0 dialogs, 0 page errors, payloads present as inert text, 20–57 cards and 2–4 tables rendering in each scenario. Both servers ran the same binary; only -public differed, so this is a perf.js-only comparison. Real data, no mocking: dashboard renders normally, 0 page errors [A].

Behaviour change beyond the purpose. None found. normalizeSlowPath stays a pure string transform with one call site; cmd/server gains no writes (diff grep for Exec/INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE/os.Write*: none) and no new map[string]interface{} anywhere, tests included [K]. The ~30 extra escapeHtml() wrappers are output-identical for numbers; the one cosmetic side effect is that a null/missing numeric now renders "" instead of "undefined" (escapeHtml returns '' for nullish) — an improvement. deploy.yml adds exactly one line, the #392 E2E, in the Playwright step [K]. The 22 lines added to check-xss-sinks.sh are entirely inside the leading # comment block, so gate behaviour is unchanged [K].

Mandatory checks. cmd/server read-only ✓ [K] · no new map[string]interface{} outside tests (none at all) ✓ [K] · no new hardcoded colours — the only colour literal on a + line is the pre-existing style="color:red" at perf.js:374 (master:360) ✓ [K] · scripts/check-xss-sinks.sh --diff origin/master clean, exit 0 — and live, not vacuous: I appended a deliberate raw sink (document.body.innerHTML = \${n.name}`), committed it in a throwaway clone branch, and the gate flagged public/perf.js:408✓ [T] · fork-guards 9 indeploy.yml/ 1 inrelease-fast-path.yml✓ [K] · no closing keywords in either commit message or the PR body (only "Relates to #392") ✓ [K] · commit author and committer bothdborup kontakt@meshview.dkon both branch commits ✓ [K] ·npx eslint@8 public/*.js(legacy.eslintrc.json`) 0 errors ✓ [T].

Acceptance criteria → test. Criteria 1–3 (escape every interpolated value, normalise SlowQuery.Path server-side, hostile-string unit/E2E tests against a local server) each have a dedicated test that is red before and green after — I ran the full new suite against master's perf.js and got 12 of 12 new tests red (56 passed, 12 failed), green at this head (68 passed, 0 failed) [T]. Criterion 4 ("make sure check-xss-sinks.sh covers these sinks") remains not met in the literal sense; the PR substitutes a documented impossibility argument plus tests, which I accept — see F5 above, with N3 the only wording issue.

Tests run (merged tree = origin/master f60d963d + head, in scratch)

Run Result
go test ./... in cmd/server ok, 40.1s [T]
go test ./... in cmd/ingestor ok, 106.4s [T]
go test -race -count=2 -run 'TestNormalizeSlowPath|TestPerf' ok [T]
sh test-all.sh 235 passed, 1 failed (236 files) — the one failure is test-backup-sqlite-safety.js, 9 subtests "missing tool setsid"; it fails identically on plain origin/master here (37/9) and setsid does not exist on macOS, so it is environment-local, not this branch [T]
node test-frontend-helpers.js 712 passed, 0 failed [T]
node test-xss-escape-sinks.js 68 passed, 0 failed [T]
same suite against master's perf.js (red-before) 56 passed, 12 failed — all 12 new cases red [T]
node test-xss-392-perf-e2e.js (local Go server :13800, fixture prepared as in deploy.yml: freshen → Kpa-clawbot#1486 seed → corescope-migrate → seeds 2073/199/245) 1 passed, 0 failed [T][A]
node test-xss-333-pages-e2e.js (same server) 11 passed, 0 failed [T][A]
node test-xss-333-e2e.js (same server) 8 passed, 0 failed [T][A]
scripts/check-xss-sinks.sh --diff origin/master (real clone, sanity-checked live) clean, exit 0 [T]
check-xss-sinks.sh --file × 80 public/** files, master 2 files with findings, perf.js not among them [T]
own browser sweep, 6 scenarios × (pre-fix vs head) 38 injections → 0 [A]

CI run 38338509061 on this exact head, checked per job: Go Build & Test ✅ (15m11s), Playwright E2E ✅ (24m20s, log line #392 perf E2E: 1 passed, 0 failed), Docker ✅, Release/Deploy/Badges skipped by the fork guard [T]. run_attempt = 2; attempt 1's single failure is N9. No #256 or #267 occurrence.

Mutants

Author's round-2 mutants reproduced, plus my own. Nine run in total; six killed, three survive as the test gaps above.

# Mutant Expected Actual
M1 sanitizeSlowPathComponent: drop || r == 0x7f red survives — whole cmd/server suite green [T] → N4
M2 cap off-by-one: n >= slowPathRawCap → n > red killed — 2 subtests red (130 runes, 261 runes) [T]
M3 normalizeSlowPath: emit key unsanitised (pre-fix) red killed — 5139 runes (max 259) + control chars survived in the key half [T]
M4 perf.js fallback body → return s; red killed — #394 F2: fallback did not escape <, 67/1 [T]
M5 drop escapeHtml(m.rss) (health Node branch) red survives — 68/0 and 712/0 green [T] → N5
M6 drop escapeHtml(err.message) red survives — 68/0 green [T] → N6
M7 fallback selector condition → (false) red killed — selector did not prefer globalThis.escapeHtml, 67/1 [T]
M8 drop escapeHtml(health ? health.uptimeHuman …) red killed — #392 perf overview red, 67/1 [T]
M9 drop escapeHtml(k) (write-source name) red killed — #392 perf write-sources table red, 67/1 [T]

Direct probes with no mutation, at this head [T]: total stored value 259 runes for a 5000-char key and raw (round 1: 5139); CR/LF/NUL/ESC/DEL stripped from both halves; HTML payload passes through un-escaped as intended ("/api/:id /api/<img src=x onerror=alert(1)>").

Not verified

  • Staging and production — not touched. Everything ran against local servers on ports 13800/13801 with the committed fixture; no API key was used, no hostile data was persisted (the E2E and my probes mock in-browser only).
  • The remaining ~40 Playwright E2Es in deploy.yml — I ran the #392 suite and the two #333 suites; CI covers the rest and is green on this head.
  • test-backup-sqlite-safety.js's 9 setsid subtests — cannot run on macOS (fails identically on plain master).
  • Whether the canonical skill-side mirror of check-xss-sinks.sh and its shared allowlist could absorb path/q.path/k without harm in other repos — my N3 false-positive count is for this repo's public/ tree only. That mirror is outside this repo.
  • A live two-half SlowQuery.Path: I induced 20 real slow queries but never pushed a parameterised route past 100 ms locally, so every live row showed the deduped single-half form. The two-half shape is pinned by unit tests and follows from the single call site.
  • Whether a hostile endpoint key or slow-query path is reachable end-to-end on a real deployment (round 1 left this unsettled; unchanged — the frontend escaping makes it moot).
  • Long-run or concurrency behaviour of the slow-query ring under the new path shape beyond the -race runs above.
