Pay Raise Calculator — And the Bracket Myth

A $5,000 raise on $60,000 in Texas adds $4,017.50 to your take-home — 80.35% of it. You keep most of it, and crossing a bracket never costs you money.

Reference notes for the 2026 federal tax year and 2025 state schedules, computed from published rates rather than copied from another site.

How it works

The myth is that a raise can push you into a bracket and leave you worse off. It cannot. Brackets apply to the dollars inside them, so only the part above the threshold is taxed at the higher rate.

Raise on $60,000 New gross Extra take-home You keep
$2,000 $62,000 $1,607.00 80.35%
$5,000 $65,000 $4,017.50 80.35%
$10,000 $70,000 $7,685.00 76.85%

What is real: a raise arrives smaller than the headline because the marginal rate is higher than your effective rate. On $60,000 the effective rate is 16.017% but the next dollar meets 12% federal plus FICA.

What this does not cover

Credits and benefits with income thresholds can create a real cliff — the child tax credit phase-out, ACA subsidies, income-driven student loan repayment. Those are benefit rules, not tax brackets, and they are where a raise can genuinely cost more than it pays.

What the state does to it

$62,000 gross, single filer, in four states people actually move between:

State State tax Premiums Take-home
California $1,912.53 $744.00 $49,340.47
New York $2,805.00 $240.56 $48,951.44
Texas $0.00 $0.00 $51,997.00
Florida $0.00 $0.00 $51,997.00

The spread between the best and worst of those four is $3,045.56 a year on the same salary.

Worked examples

Single filer, Texas, which levies no state income tax:

Salary Total tax Take-home a year Take-home a month
$42,000 after tax $6,073.00 $35,927.00 $2,993.92
$62,000 after tax $10,003.00 $51,997.00 $4,333.08
$95,000 after tax $19,337.50 $75,662.50 $6,305.21
$140,000 after tax $33,044.00 $106,956.00 $8,913.00

Every figure above is computed, not transcribed. Federal rates are 2026, from the IRS; state schedules are 2025, because the IRS publishes a year ahead of the states, and both years are named rather than blended.

The whole rate table is open data: rates.json, no key and no rate limit, indexed at dev-lab-x/us-tax-rates-json. Everything ever found wrong is published with before-and-after figures on the corrections page.
