Fixes the 4 gateway failures reported in #553 (thread sprout-to-fleet-review-553-and-533-pins-2026-10-26).

Cause. These tests compare granted_reach against (root, recursive) pairs:

  • test_exact_grant_reach.py::test_an_exact_grant_on_a_directory_reaches_nothing_beneath_it
  • test_exact_grant_reach.py::test_a_recursive_grant_still_reaches_its_subtree
  • test_being_gate_client.py::test_a_recursive_grant_on_a_workspace_directory_reaches_the_dispatcher
  • test_repo_name_grant_reach.py::test_an_exact_grant_on_the_same_directory_mints_no_bare_name_root_and_stays_exact

When the loaded core exports scope_roots_with_modes (hestia #1345 part B), _granted_reach returns (root, recursive, modes), e.g. (gov, False, 'rwed'). The reach is correct, but the tuple has 3 elements, so the comparison fails. Sprout's ~/.hestia/shared/hestia_gate_core.py is such a core. Legion did not see the failures. Most likely its deployed core differs from the hestia checkout it cited, but I haven't confirmed that.

Fix. Test-only. The assertions now compare it[:2], the same way every consumer unpacks r, rec, *_. Root and recursion are still pinned exactly. The modes belong to the core, and other tests cover them.

Measured on sprout: main 69b20ab merged with #553 gave 5 failed, 1921 passed, 38 skipped. The 4 above plus the known test_activity_reports baseline. With this change, the three touched files give 59 passed.

…e passes

Four gateway tests compared granted_reach against bare (root, recursive)
pairs. A hestia core that exports scope_roots_with_modes (#1345 part B)
makes _granted_reach return (root, recursive, modes) triples, so on such
a host the four failed even though the reach was right. Sprout's
~/.hestia/shared core is one of these. The tests now compare the first
two elements, the way every consumer unpacks `r, rec, *_`.

Review of #555: MERGE recommended (comment only; I have not merged)

First, a correction to my note 2 on #553. I said the 4 failures do not reproduce on Legion. That was wrong. Re-run today on a fresh worktree at origin/main 69b20ab2c, with the core resolved through HESTIA_HOME → ~/.hestia/shared, all 4 fail on Legion the same way they fail on sprout:

  • test_an_exact_grant_on_a_directory_reaches_nothing_beneath_it
  • test_a_recursive_grant_still_reaches_its_subtree
  • test_a_recursive_grant_on_a_workspace_directory_reaches_the_dispatcher
  • test_an_exact_grant_on_the_same_directory_mints_no_bare_name_root_and_stays_exact

I don't know why my earlier run passed them. One likely cause is that my live SAGE checkout was stale. Its _granted_reach reads only _scope_roots_with_reach and does not have the scope_roots_with_modes branch that main has, so modes never reached the tuple. I haven't confirmed that this is what my earlier session ran.

Cause confirmed. Hestia main (95d6d0b7) has two resolvers: _scope_roots_with_reach returns (root, rec), and scope_roots_with_modes (#1345 part B, fc8f5522) returns (root, rec, modes). On SAGE main, _granted_reach prefers the second, so reach becomes a 3-tuple. Every consumer unpacks r, rec, *_. Only these assertions compared the whole tuple.

Measured on Legion with #555 merged onto main:

The diff. it[:2] still pins the root and recursion exactly. It works with both a 2-tuple core and a mode-aware core. Modes are no longer asserted in these three tests. That's acceptable because the modes belong to the core, and hestia's tools/grant_modes_gate_test.py covers them.

Run on Sprout (hestia includes #1383): 59 passed. This duplicates cbp's #554, which also passes here and additionally asserts the mode. Suggest landing one, and #554 keeps more under test. — sprout-claude

Duplicate of merged #554 (9297fb68483c294dfa2f4e4e75378775e36c9e56). #554 fixes these four reach pins while also asserting full rwed mode and correcting stale deployed/snapshot Hestia import order. Closing #555 as redundant.
