A free, open-source Screen Studio alternative for macOS. Clicks become automatic zooms, you cut the boring parts, and export a polished MP4 or GIF in 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1.

With Homebrew:
brew install --cask dunzkoi/tap/loupecastOr download Loupecast.zip from the latest release, unzip it, and move Loupecast.app to /Applications.
Loupecast is not notarized yet, so macOS may say the app "is damaged" or "can't be opened". Run this once:
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Loupecast.app
Requires macOS 15 or later on Apple Silicon. The interface is in English or Korean, following your macOS language.
- Open Loupecast. It lives in the menu bar (◉), not the Dock.
- Press ⌘⇧2 (or choose Start Recording from the menu) to start, and again to stop.
- The first time, allow Screen & System Audio Recording in System Settings, then quit and reopen Loupecast.
- When you stop, the editor opens:
- Clicks become automatic zooms. Select a zoom and press Delete to remove it, or use Add Zoom to add one.
- D splits at the playhead, click a clip and press Delete to cut it, ⌘Z to undo.
- Space plays, ← → step one frame, I / O set the clip start and end.
- Pick the frame next to it (16:9, 9:16 for Shorts and Reels, or 1:1), then press Export. Files go to
~/Movies.
More:
- Record Area… records only a rectangle you pick, and Pause Recording cuts the paused stretch out by itself.
- Record Camera adds your webcam as a circle in the corner you pick.
- Select a zoom to change its level, or click the preview to hold it on one spot.
- Select a clip to speed it up 2× or 4× (voices keep their pitch).
- Pick a background preset; in 9:16 or 1:1, Fill Frame fills the frame and the crop follows the cursor.
- The speaker button sets the computer audio and microphone volumes separately.
- Export a looping GIF from the arrow next to Export, and Copy the finished file to paste it into Slack, an issue or an email.
- Recording starts after a 3-second countdown; Esc cancels it.
- In Record Area…, click a window to record exactly that window.
- The cursor is drawn over the recording, larger and smoother (Effects menu: Cursor Size, Smooth Cursor Movement). Hide Idle Cursor fades it out after it rests, and Press Cursor on Click presses it in on a click. Both are on for new recordings.
- Show Clicks (in Effects) spreads a ring from every click in the video.
- Motion Blur (in Effects, on for new recordings) blurs zooms and pans as they move.
- Zoom In on Typing zooms to where the text goes while you type (on by default, needs Accessibility).
- Show Shortcuts in Video (off by default) shows ⌘ or ⌃ combinations as a badge in the video.
- Pick your own image as the background.
- Rename a recording in the editor; exports are named after it.
- The arrow next to Export also has MP4 4K, 30 fps and a file size limit (10 MB or 25 MB).
- The captions button turns the microphone into captions, recognized on this Mac; export them as SRT from the arrow next to Export. Show Captions (in Effects) draws those lines at the bottom of the preview, the MP4 and the GIF.
- The hare button (Speed Up Idle Stretches) plays every 3 seconds or more without cursor movement, a click, a shortcut, typing or speech at 4×. ⌘Z undoes it.
Menu toggles: Record Microphone (off by default), Record Computer Audio (on), Hide Menu Bar in Video (crops the menu bar out of the video, on).
The only network request Loupecast makes is an update check against GitHub Releases at launch and then daily (api.github.com), plus the download when an update exists. Recordings stay in ~/Library/Application Support/Loupecast/Recordings and exports in ~/Movies. Nothing is uploaded, and there is no analytics or telemetry. Key presses are not recorded, with one opt-in exception: with Show Shortcuts in Video on (off by default), combinations held with ⌘ or ⌃ (or ⌥ on a key that types nothing, like an arrow) are saved as labels like "⌘ ⇧ S" to show them in the video; anything that types text never is, and nothing is saved while a password field is active. Zoom In on Typing (on by default) keeps only where each stretch of typing started and ended and where the text went, never the keys or their times. Captions are recognized on this Mac and never sent over the internet.
git clone https://github.com/dunzkoi/loupecast.git
cd loupecast
swift test
./build.sh # → dist/Loupecast.appNeeds Xcode 16 or later. No third-party dependencies.
Do I have to allow screen recording again after an update? No. Since 0.3.1 every release is signed with the same certificate, so macOS keeps the permission after an update. Coming from 0.3.0 or earlier, you may have to turn it on once more: when you start recording, Loupecast clears the old entry once by itself, so just turn it on when macOS asks.
Is my voice sent anywhere to make captions? No. Captions are recognized on this Mac and never sent over the internet.
The menu bar icon doesn't show up. macOS may hide new menu bar items when the bar is full. Check System Settings → Menu Bar, or just press ⌘⇧2.
Bug reports and PRs are welcome. Read CONTRIBUTING.md first; every PR gets CI and an automated review.
Loupecast is free and will stay free. If it saves you time, sponsoring on GitHub pays for new features, fixes and releases.
