Initially, surveys and a structured taxonomy of the "artificial mind" literature — books, arXiv preprints, and cognitive architectures. This will then grow to more detailed analyses and recommendations.
The phrase "artificial mind" turns out to be a strange object of study in its own right. It has attracted a handful of serious academic works across three decades — Franklin's Artificial Minds (1995), Hoya's Artificial Mind System (2005), Magnani's Semiotic Brains and Artificial Minds (2007/09), Raikov's Artificial Mind (2024), Louwerse's Understanding Artificial Minds Through Human Minds (2025) — a live population of GitHub cognitive-architecture projects (OpenCog/Hyperon, LIDA, OpenNARS, Numenta HTM), and a body of arXiv preprints that circle the same question under different names ("mind design space," "psyche," "cognitive architecture"). Almost none of these works cite one another. This repository collects and cross-references that literature, and will use it as the theoretical foundation for further analysis and, eventually, concrete recommendations.

- A structured taxonomy — a machine-readable comparison of the works surveyed, cross-tabulated by ontology of mind, architectural commitment, human/AI continuity, and treatment of phenomenality/consciousness.

This repository is also the theoretical home for Athena Relenium, an in-development cognitive architecture project grounded explicitly in the lineage surveyed here.
