perf(storage): read eligible disk GETs on the connection worker - #314
Conversation
Keep primary arena directories at a stable address and publish page descriptors atomically. Concurrent resolution requires callers to protect entry and arena lifetimes; private auxiliary arenas retain incremental directory growth.
Select 32 read stripes and a 32-bucket floor through a compile-time parameter only for RecordIndex. Preserve empty bucket allocation, recovery sizing, shrink limits, and first-insert admission estimates. Read states remain closed pending integration of the concurrent reader protocol.
Close remote pin admission before testing whether a sealed staging buffer can be released. Both flush completion paths use the same helper so the last remote unpin either precedes the zero-count check or notifies the owner; write buffers cannot be stranded behind release_pending with no wakeup. Initialize GET tracing before remote admission and attach it to fast hits, misses, and errors. Preserve the original request start across fallback while resetting per-path stages. Trace-only I/O completion records the actual CQE time; trace-disabled builds retain the existing awaitable layout and I/O path. Validation: 856 Debug unit tests, 20 trace-enabled awaitable tests, remote GET and defrag payload end-to-end tests. Live trace logs contain all 1,025 requests in each of fast miss, durable hit, and indirect-key owner fallback workloads, with the expected remote/hit/disk ratios.

WalkthroughThis change adds concurrent read admission for primary indexes, carries Redis slots into transaction locks, and adds an eligible standalone GET path on the connection worker. It also changes block-pin coordination and SPDK qpair assignments, updates connection cleanup behavior, and adds tests and architecture documentation. ChangesConcurrent Storage Read Path

Suggested reviewers: Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to Single-owner EXEC transactions may do extra per-partition lock work and briefly turn away unrelated remote GETs. This is a performance concern, not a correctness one. It should be addressed or accepted before merge. Pre-merge checks |

🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick winCarry the Redis slot in
DedupExecLocksrefs. The multi-shard EXEC path now passes
storage::RedisSlot(...)toAddKey(Lines 10328-10347). The single-owner EXEC path is different. It acquiresDedupExecLocks(cmd_keys, ctx.watched_), and that function buildstx::KeyRef{fp, mode, db}without a slot. Each ref therefore getsslot_ = kLogicalStorageShards.ChangeReadIntentandReadIntentReadyinsrc/storage/engine/init.cpp(Lines 2112-2129) then loop over every partition on the worker. They do this for each close, each readiness poll, and each release. With one worker, that is 16,384 partitions per key, three times per EXEC. Single-owner EXEC is the common case, so this adds latency in proportion to the partition count. It also closes the key's stripe in every partition, which turns away unrelated remote GETs.Store the slot when
ExecKeyis built, or compute it here, and pass it intoKeyRef. For merged refs, use the sentinel only when the slots differ.Proposed fix

91-94: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick winMake the concurrent FLUSHDB reader reject stale values after its first miss.
The comment says stale bytes must never reappear after FLUSHDB. The background reader does not check this. It accepts
beforeandafteron every iteration, including after it has already seenNone. A remote GET that returns pre-flush bytes after the detach therefore still passes the overlapping phase. The later admin pass at Lines 95-96 runs only after the race is over.Once
readseesNone, it should accept onlyNone. Every key inkeys[:1000]is cleared by the same FLUSHDB, so one shared "seen a miss" flag is enough.🧪 Proposed change

329-343: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low valueMake the probe wait for the index-writer drain, not the first closed bit.
Settakes its key lock first, andTryFastPathcloses the same stripe through the read-intent hook before anyAwaitIndexWrite. The probe releases the reader as soon as it seeskClosed. That bit is set by the transaction intent, so the drain is handled by theTxShardqueue andReadersDrained.AwaitIndexWritethen never waits onWaitForReaders. The test passes, but it does not exercise the index-writer drain that its error text describes.Add a test-only signal after
AwaitIndexWriteobserves!guard.ready(), and release the reader only after that signal. Or rename the test to say that it covers transaction intent admission.Based on learnings: "a task can exit early at an initial guard check without ever reaching the later code path the test intends to exercise; instead, add an explicit test-only synchronization point."

Context
A GET whose key belongs to another worker currently routes its storage work through that owner even when the connection worker can issue the disk read itself. This adds cross-worker scheduling to eligible disk reads.
Behavior before and after
Standalone GET can snapshot an eligible remote index entry and read its immutable record directly on the connection worker. The fast path supports durable, complete-key, non-grouped, non-external Strings whose block owner is also the key owner, provided the connection worker has device access. Unsupported records, conflicting admission, expiration, exhausted read buffers, and stale populations use the existing owner route. Index misses obey the same admission and population checks.
Implementation
Design decisions and alternatives
Index guards protect only synchronous lookup and location capture; physical pins protect the subsequent I/O lifetime. Writers may append while a previously admitted disk read finishes. Local and remote validators retain independent implementations and scheduling boundaries: local completion polling parses metadata, while CRC and payload copying stay in the caller's scheduled slice. Existing specialized reader-wait helpers and their fast paths are retained.
Documentation and comments
Updated request-serving, transaction, and storage architecture documents, plus the multi-device operations guide. Ownership, admission, rehash, pin lifetime, and close-before-count invariants are documented beside the implementation. No durable record-format change or new runtime option.
Test plan
Validation on head
a2ba846c2:GroupedRdbStreamE2e.*suite passed (8 passed, one opt-in skip). The aggregate grouped deadline is now 1800 seconds for slower CI runners. The initial full run is not claimed as green.git diff --checkpassed.Commands used:
The earlier
571067cbcvalidation passed both remote-GET and defrag-payload E2E tests, covering transactions, FLUSHDB, recovery, and cross-worker payload lifetime. The flush regression rejects the old pin-close ordering with a stranded staging buffer. The unchanged
ParseRecord,FinishRecord, andDecodeRemoteValueimplementations previously produced identical machine code and relocation targets to their pre-cleanup versions under Release-O3, trace disabled, without LTO. This is a scoped code-generation check, not a throughput result. Final-head SPDK throughput benchmarks were not run.CI rerun for this head is in progress; its final result is not yet available.
Risk assessment
The principal risks are cross-worker index/block lifetime, transaction admission, and notification ordering during flush, defrag, and population replacement. Expanded SPDK access consumes spare controller qpairs. Prefetch effectiveness and overall throughput depend on workload and hardware; this PR makes no measured speedup claim for the final head.
Rollback plan
Revert this PR; no data migration is required.
