perf: reduce ScanHashMap entry span allocation overhead - #366
Conversation
Request 960 KiB for sixteen-page entry spans and use mi_expand to confirm the full MiB is usable. Fall back to the full-size allocation for Debug padding and direct OS allocations, releasing the temporary retained charge before retrying. Cover span capacity, final-byte access, page reuse, retained accounting, and admission rejection with regression tests.

WalkthroughThe arena now tries compact aligned storage, expands it when possible, and falls back to a full-size allocation when needed. Tests cover cleanup, accounting, retry behavior, and small-slot reuse across logical pages. ChangesSpan allocation and page reuse

TryAllocateRetainedBytesreservesAllocatorUsableSizeForRequest(bytes) + alignment. Compute both charges in the test, leave a small metadata margin after the compact charge, and assert that the full-size charge exceeds that remaining budget. This proves that the compact request can be admitted while the fallback is rejected.Keep the null assertion in the non-expandable branch. Do not assert that every allocation succeeds.

Context
ScanHashMap requests 1 MiB aligned to 64 KiB for each sixteen-page entry span. The pinned release mimalloc's normal arena path retains 1088 KiB for this request, leaving 64 KiB unused.
Behavior before and after
Request 960 KiB and confirm that the allocation can hold the full MiB with
mi_expand. On the local ARM64 release build, backing allocation falls from 1,114,112 to 1,048,576 bytes per span: 64 KiB (5.9%) saved with the same sixteen-page capacity. When expansion is unavailable, use the original full-size request.
Implementation
The expansion check runs once per new span, with the failure branch marked
[[unlikely]]. Before a fallback allocation, release the temporary storage and its retained charge. Keep admission headroom sufficient for the full-size fallback.Tests cover the final byte of page sixteen, page reuse, actual accounting, and cleanup and retry after admission rejection. Test-local memory settings are restored by RAII, including on fatal assertions. The rejection test derives both admission charges from the allocator and verifies the budget lies between them.
Design decisions and alternatives
Keep allocator ownership and reclamation in mimalloc. Debug padding disables expansion, and direct OS allocation can lose usable capacity to alignment, so a runtime check is necessary. Direct
mmapallocation would require separate mapping, reclamation, and accounting behavior.Documentation and comments
Updated nearby comments explain allocation rounding, expansion constraints, fallback ownership, and admission. This changes a local allocation strategy; the documented worker-local arena ownership, handle format, and allocator integration remain valid, so no architecture update is required.
Test plan
Local ARM64 validation on the current test changes:
The focused harness compiles the current ScanHashMap tests with
-fsanitize=undefined -fno-sanitize-recover=alland warnings treated as errors. It links both release and Debug mimalloc and runs each normally and withMIMALLOC_DISALLOW_ARENA_ALLOC=1: all four runs pass all 40 tests. Formatting and whitespace checks pass.Full Debug validation of the allocation implementation at
db2b5a5d4, withLAVIK_ENABLE_WERROR=ON:All 1027 registered unit tests passed through CTest in 36.31 seconds. Both added regression tests were also verified to fail against unchanged main with release mimalloc.
Risk assessment
Debug padding and direct OS allocation can require an extra allocation/free pair before the fallback. The release footprint measurement concerns allocated span capacity; end-to-end RSS and SET tail latency have not been measured.
Rollback plan
Revert the PR to restore the original full-size span request.
