Two fixes from Roslin's QA round on #398 (24 Sep), plus Chad's follow-up on the tooltip (16 Oct). The other half of the header and title fix is in the API and already merged: eten-tech-foundation/fluent-api#410.

Tooltips showed up outside the dialog (fixed)

The "Stored as \toc1" tooltips appeared above the dialog's top-left corner instead of next to their field. Same thing in Chromium and Firefox.

The trigger was the field Label, and our Label doesn't forward refs. Radix never got an element to measure, so the tooltip stayed where Radix parks it before positioning: left: 0; top: 0, shifted up by its own height. The dialog has a transform, so that spot is the dialog's corner. React warns about it in development ("Function components cannot be given refs"), which is how I found it.

Chad looked at the tooltip on QA (the old code) and asked for a plain tooltip like the rest of the app: right above the label, with the little arrow, and no special cursor on the label. So the info button from the first version of this PR is gone. Hovering the label itself shows the tooltip, and the old cursor-help question mark is gone too. The label sits in a span so Radix gets an element to measure, and the content uses the same props and portal as the milestone name tooltip in the project panel.

One trade-off: like that tooltip and the app's other text tooltips, it opens on hover only. A focusable span would add three tab stops per book, so each input carries "Stored as \tocN" as its accessible description instead. Keyboard and screen reader users get the marker from the field itself, and Tab goes straight from one field to the next.

Before, on main:

Before: the tooltip floats above the dialog's top-left corner

Now, next to the milestone name tooltip it copies:

The Long Name tooltip next to the milestone name tooltip

Short Name showed the book title (fixed)

When a book had no \toc2, the Short Name input showed the legacy \mt book title instead. Chad crossed that pre-fill rule out on 20 Aug, together with deriving \mt1 from the Short Name. After the API fix the title only goes to \mt1, so showing it as the Short Name would promise a \toc2 line the file doesn't have. The three inputs now show exactly what's stored.

This one is its own commit in case we'd rather keep the old behavior.

Tests

Unit tests hover each label and check that Radix actually positions the tooltip. The old trigger fails that check: its tooltip stays parked at translate(0, -200%). Another test checks each input's accessible description, and one checks that Short Name shows only the stored \toc2.

Validation on the PR head:

  • 18 E2E cases pass, 9 per browser in Chromium and Firefox, against an isolated web, API and PostgreSQL with a real project manager login.
    • Tooltips: hovering each of the three labels, and the last book of a 12-book list after a mouse-wheel scroll. Each tooltip has to open right above its own label, inside the dialog box, with the arrow, while the label keeps the normal cursor. A keyboard case checks the inputs' descriptions and that Tab goes from field to field.
    • Export: the three TOC fields edited in the dialog, with and without an authored \h/\mt, plus a second edit on top of the first, each checked in the file downloaded from Export Milestone.
    • Save and reload: values saved by closing the dialog, a value saved on blur with the dialog left open, and a book with only a title. After a page reload the dialog shows what's stored, Short Name stays empty for the title-only book, and its title is still \mt1 in the export.
  • On main all 6 tooltip cases fail: the tooltip opens above the dialog (y 5, with the dialog's top at 72), the label has the help cursor, and the inputs have no description. The 6 export cases fail there too, on the \h/\mt1 lines. I didn't run the save-and-reload cases on main.
  • Lint (0 errors), formatting and TypeScript pass. The full unit suite passes, 1816 tests.

Tested web 8b90ee6327f8ddeccf17e99b49cea2b2267121f6 with API eten-tech-foundation/fluent-api#410 at dff7bc8f371f4e61889a96ea8cee235d8e578337 (merged as 7504838). These are local checks only.

Side note: I couldn't reproduce Roslin's scrolling finding. With 12 books in the dialog, the mouse wheel reaches the last one in both browsers.

Fixes #398

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Book metadata fields now display only their stored table-of-contents values. The short-name field remains blank when no value is stored, rather than using the legacy book title. Running headers and book titles are not used to prefill these fields.
  • Accessibility
    • Field labels provide tooltips identifying their corresponding USFM markers. The markers are also available to screen readers without adding extra buttons.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the book metadata guidance to reflect which values appear in the fields.

The tooltip trigger was the field Label, which doesn't forward refs, so
Radix never got an element to measure. The tooltip stayed where Radix
parks content before positioning, and the dialog's transform put that
spot above the dialog's top-left corner (QA on #398).

Each label now has an info button as the trigger, like the Connectivity
Profile field and the info icon in the ticket's mockup. The button takes
focus, so the tooltip opens from the keyboard too.

Part of #398.
The Short Name input fell back to the legacy \mt book title when a book
had no \toc2. Chad crossed that pre-fill rule out of #398 on 20 Aug,
and the export now writes the title only to \mt1, so the dialog shows
the three TOC values exactly as stored.

Part of #398.

📝 Walkthrough

The dialog now displays stored TOC values without using the book title as a fallback. Each field’s label reveals its USFM marker in a tooltip, and the input exposes that marker as an accessible description.

Explanation

The PR satisfies the relevant coding requirements in #398. The dialog retains per-book accordions, three TOC inputs, and save-on-blur or close behavior. Each label uses a measurable span trigger, a portalled tooltip, and the correct \toc1, \toc2, or \toc3 marker. Each input exposes the marker through an accessible description. serverValues uses only stored TOC values, so Short Name no longer falls back to bookTitle. Tests cover tooltip positioning, accessible descriptions, stored values, and save behavior.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within #398. The component changes fix TOC tooltip behavior and stored Short Name display. The tests verify these requirements and accessibility. The documentation records the same TOC display rules. No unrelated product behavior is introduced.

Explanation

No functions found in the changed files to evaluate docstring coverage. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 0 functions across 2 files.

Verified the diagnosis and the fix locally; both hold up.

Tooltip fix — confirmed the root cause: Label in src/components/ui/label.tsx is a plain
function component and doesn't forward refs, so TooltipTrigger asChild never gave Radix an
element to measure and the content stayed parked at translate(0, -200%), which the dialog's
transform renders above its top-left corner. Button forwards refs, and the ghost Info
trigger matches the Connectivity Profile pattern in ProjectFormFields.tsx:135-156 almost
verbatim — good consistency. Nice that it also fixes keyboard access, and that the test asserts
the popper actually leaves the parking position, not just that the tooltip renders.

Short Name fix — removing the bookTitle seed is safe: dirtyFields skips fields with no
draft, so untouched fields still never PATCH, and a cleared-again field diffs '' vs ''.
bookTitle/tocShortName have no consumers outside this dialog and useBookDetails, so the
change is self-contained. Behaviour change is intentional and matches Chad's 20 Aug ruling
(toc saved as-is, mt left alone).

Non-blocking nits, take or leave:

  1. The dialog's TooltipProvider (line 262) uses Radix's default delay; the Connectivity
Profile instance this mirrors passes delayDuration={300}, as do ~10 other call sites.
Worth matching for consistent hover feel.
  2. The info-button + tooltip block is now a second copy of the ProjectFormFields idiom.
If a third appears, extracting an InfoTooltipButton would be warranted.
  3. docs/domain-rules.md §Saving documents the dialog's save rules — the new "inputs show
only stored \toc1–3; \h/\mt never seeded" invariant could be a one-line addition there,
since that file is the review checklist.

One flag for merge coordination: QA finding 5's write-side bug (toc2 landing in \h/mt1
slots) lives in fluent-api#410 — this PR fixes the display half, so the finding should stay
open until both ship and Roslin retests. Findings 1 and 3 correctly remain unclaimed here.

Also noting for QA: books with \mt but no \toc2 now show an empty Short Name where they
previously showed the title — intentional per the ticket, but worth an explicit re-verify so
it doesn't come back as a new finding.

Use the 300 ms tooltip delay that the Connectivity Profile field and
most other tooltips in the app use; the dialog had Radix's default.

Note in docs/domain-rules.md that the dialog shows only the stored
\toc1, \toc2 and \toc3 values and never pre-fills them from \h or \mt.

Part of #398.
Chad asked for a plain tooltip after seeing the dialog on QA: hovering
the label shows "Stored as \tocN" right above it, with the arrow and the
normal cursor, the way the milestone name tooltip works. The info
buttons are gone.

The label is wrapped in a span because Label doesn't forward a ref, and
the content reuses the milestone name tooltip's props and portal. A span
isn't focusable, so each input now carries the marker as its accessible
description for keyboard and screen reader users.

🤖 Automated review (Claude Code, code-review skill: Standards and Spec reviewed separately). Not a human approval. All suggestions are non-blocking.

I reviewed fef7d30 against main and issue #398, with all comments up to 16 Oct. Unit tests were not run in this pass. I relied on the validation in the PR description.

Standards

No breaches of a documented standard.

  • docs/domain-rules.md records the new display rule and cites the renamed test, which is what AGENTS.md asks for.
  • The direct Portal import from @radix-ui/react-tooltip already appears in ManageMilestoneBooksDialog.tsx and TruncatedText.tsx.
  • TooltipContent doesn't portal itself, so the content isn't portalled twice.
  • delayDuration={300} matches the other providers.

There are two possible duplication smells, both judgement calls. They're in the inline comments.

Spec (#398)

  • QA Create Basic Landing Page #2 (tooltip outside the modal): fixed. The trigger now passes Radix an element it can measure. TooltipContent always renders the arrow (tooltip.tsx), and side='top' and the removed cursor-help match what Chad asked for on 16 Oct. I couldn't compare against the mockup Chad mentioned on 24 Sep. Someone should check it by eye.
  • Removing the Short Name pre-fill from \mt: this follows Chad's 20 Aug change ("toc markers are just saved as they are and mt is left alone"). Before this PR, an untouched pre-filled title could be saved into \toc2 on the next edit, so the change also helps with QA Create New User/Reset Password Invite Email #5. bookTitle has no other readers in src, and the PATCH type only carries the three toc* fields.
  • Scope: the delay change and the doc line weren't in the spec. Both are small and they follow existing patterns.
  • Keyboard access: the tooltip opens on hover only, and keyboard users get the marker from each input's aria-describedby instead. On main, the Label trigger wasn't focusable either, so this isn't a regression. QA's "keyboard navigation works" result should still hold.

CodeRabbit feedback

I checked its one finding (add a focusable info button). It was correct that the span trigger can't take focus. But withdrawing it was the right call: Chad explicitly asked for no info icon, the old trigger had the same limitation, and the sr-only description gives the marker to keyboard and screen reader users. Nothing more to do there.

How this lines up with other reviews

  • @kaseywright's nits: Create Login Page #1 (delayDuration) and Create Manage Users Page #3 (domain-rules line) are handled in b756d73. Create Basic Landing Page #2 was about the old info button, but the same concern now applies to the portalled text tooltip, which is in its third copy. See the inline comment.
  • Kasey's flag about QA timing still applies: books that have \mt but no \toc2 now show an empty Short Name. That's intentional, but Roslin should re-check it explicitly so it doesn't come back as a new finding. QA findings 1 and 3 are not claimed here and stay with Roslin.

Inline notes (couldn't post as inline comments)

EditProjectMetadataDialog.tsx:294

🤖 Automated review, non-blocking. Possible Duplicated Code (judgement call).

This is now the third copy of the same portalled text tooltip. The other two are ManageMilestoneBooksDialog.tsx:66-80 and TruncatedText.tsx:85-99. All three use the same TooltipPortal > TooltipContent className='max-w-[420px] text-xs font-normal break-words' sideOffset={4} block, and the comment above even says "Same look as the milestone name tooltip". @kaseywright suggested extracting at the third copy (nit 2). The trigger changed since then, but the same reasoning holds. A TextTooltipContent, or something similar in src/components/ui/tooltip.tsx that wraps the portal and these classes, would keep the three in sync. Fine as a follow-up.

EditProjectMetadataDialog.tsx:305

🤖 Automated review, non-blocking nit. Possible Duplicated Code (judgement call).

`${inputId}-marker` is built twice, here and in the sr-only span's id (L315). t('storedAsMarker', { marker: meta.marker }) is also computed twice (L300 and L316). The ID pair is the one worth hoisting, because if one copy changes and the other doesn't, aria-describedby breaks without any visible sign. Something like this, next to inputId:

const markerId = `${inputId}-marker`;
const markerText = t('storedAsMarker', { marker: meta.marker });

TtsVerseControls.tsx does the same with reasonId.

The input's aria-describedby and the sr-only span's id came from the
same template literal written twice, so a change to one copy would
break the description without any visible sign. Both now read one
markerId, and the tooltip and the description share one markerText.
