ArcGIS cartographic outputs from my BSc Geography thesis on Household Water Consumption Patterns in Idah Local Government Area, Kogi State, Nigeria (2020).
This repository showcases the GIS maps and thematic charts produced during my undergraduate research on domestic water access and consumption in Idah LGA.
- Institution: Prince Abubakar Audu University (formerly Kogi State University), Anyigba
- Year: 2020
- Sample: 400 households across 9 communities

Figure 1: National Context Map
Nigeria shown in pale yellow with Kogi State highlighted in pink (WGS 84 projection).

Figure 2: State Context Map
Kogi State LGAs in yellow; Idah LGA highlighted in red with inset for clarity.

Figure 3: Detailed Study Area Map
Idah LGA showing 9 surveyed communities (blue dots), River Niger, road network, and neighbouring LGAs.

Figure 4: Daily Household Water Consumption Pattern
Average litres per household per day across the 9 communities. The overall mean is equivalent to 105.1 litres per person per day, derived from household-level data.

Figure 5: Major Domestic Water Sources
Percentage reliance on Borehole (blue), River (orange), and Well (green). Boreholes (48.6%) and Rivers (47.5%) dominate.

Figure 6: Accessibility – Distance to Water Source
Percentage of households with water source within 100 m. Clear spatial inequality within the LGA.

Figure 7: Time Taken to Fetch Water
Percentage of households fetching water in less than 10 minutes. Mirrors accessibility patterns.
- Software: ArcGIS Desktop
- Projection: WGS 84 (EPSG:4326)
- Data: Administrative boundaries + primary household survey (400 respondents)
- Design: Standard cartographic principles (legend, scale bar, north arrow, balanced layout)
- Average daily water consumption: 105.1 litres per person
- Main sources: Borehole (48.6%) vs River (47.5%)
- Strongest driver: Household size (33.6%)
- Near-perfect positive correlation between supply and consumption (r ≈ 1.0)
