by sub chapters i mean something like the following (ss taken from mdBook documentation site):
this idea could possibly work by adding a sub_chapters key under sidebar, and by allowing decimals in the position value under sidebar.matches, like so:

number_special_files = true
numbered = true
ordering = "custom"
sub_chapters = true
[[sidebar.matches]]
new_title = "Configuration"
path = "configuring.md"
position = 4
[[sidebar.matches]]
new_title = "Session Management"
path = "session-management.md"
