What changes

Adds TrustedRuntimeApp::submit_intents_with_runtime_wal_ack(Vec<IngressEnvelope>). It accepts several intents in order and returns after one storage sync has made all of their acceptance transactions durable. Unit 1 of #787.

How

  • FilesystemWalStore gains begin_deferred_commit_sync / finish_deferred_commit_sync. While deferral is on, a commit record is appended without its own sync_all; finish syncs the segment once and records CommitFileSynced evidence for every deferred transaction. A later ordinary commit sync also covers any still-deferred record, and rotate_segment syncs deferred records before sealing.
  • The batch call turns deferral on, runs the existing single-submission path for each envelope, then finishes with one sync. No acknowledgement is returned before that sync succeeds.
  • No format change. Each intent writes the same acceptance transaction as a single submission. Recovery is unchanged.

Semantics

  • A batch is not atomic across a crash. Each transaction is atomic through its own commit record and a torn tail is truncated as before, so a prefix can survive. None of it was acknowledged; each survivor recovers as AcceptedPending — the same posture as a single submission whose process died between commit and acknowledgement.
  • On an intake or append error the call returns the error and no handles. Submissions before the failing one stay accepted, and are synced, because their records are in the log. Resubmitting returns the existing submission.
  • If the final sync fails, the error is returned and nothing is acknowledged.

Evidence

Guarded Docker worker (Linux VM), release build, compare-and-set workload, 120 frames, one run, frame p50:

Actions per frame Store Single submissions Batched
8 tmpfs 1.88 ms 1.84 ms
8 VM disk 6.44 ms 3.55 ms
32 tmpfs 8.29 ms 8.35 ms
32 VM disk 22.99 ms 10.69 ms

On disk at 32 actions the submission phase falls from 15.70 ms to 3.26 ms. The remaining 7.4 ms is the tick's own WAL record, which is unit 2 of #787. tmpfs is unchanged, as expected: it has no sync cost.

Tests

  • batched_submission_makes_every_acceptance_durable_with_one_sync: counts commit syncs through a host-test counter. Three single submissions force three; a batch of five forces one; a fresh host then recovers all eight as AcceptedPending.
  • batched_submission_failure_acknowledges_nothing_and_can_be_retried: an injected append failure on the first envelope returns an error with no witnessed submissions; the retried batch succeeds; resubmitting one envelope returns its existing submission as a duplicate.

Guarded worker on the final source: host loop 52; WAL hardening 128; warp-core lib 707 and 737; compare-and-set 7; pipeline 42; cargo fmt --check; strict Clippy on the library and on the host test target.

Risk and review focus

This changes when a commit record is synced, so it needs a durability review. Questions worth checking:

  1. Can anything observe a deferred commit as durable before finish succeeds? The WAL adapter records an acceptance in durable_submission_acceptances when it is appended; within a batch call no tick runs in between, and a later tick's own commit sync covers the same segment.
  2. Mid-batch failures other than the first envelope are not covered by a test, because the fault plan can only fail the next operation.
  3. A failed final sync is not covered by a test; there is no fault target for it yet.

Documentation impact

docs/topics/WAL.md and CHANGELOG.md updated. The design page in #788 says no batch call exists; I will correct its Current implementation section when both have landed.

Refs #787.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Submit multiple intents together and receive acknowledgements after a shared storage sync. Duplicate submissions retain their status, and returned handles follow input order.
  • Reliability
    • Improved recovery of stored activity after interruptions. The system now verifies recovered data is synced before treating it as durable, and blocks further WAL operations after a storage failure until reopened.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified batch acknowledgement, partial acceptance, failure, and recovery behavior.

A host that submits many intents in one frame waited for one storage sync
per submission. submit_intents_with_runtime_wal_ack accepts the intents in
order, appends each one's ordinary acceptance transaction with its commit
record unsynced, then syncs the segment once and acknowledges the batch.

The bytes on disk are the transactions single submission writes, so recovery
is unchanged. A batch is not atomic across a crash: each transaction is
atomic through its own commit record, a torn tail is truncated as before, and
a surviving prefix recovers as accepted and pending with nothing
acknowledged. On an intake or append error the batch returns the error and no
handles; earlier submissions stay accepted and are synced, and resubmitting
returns the existing submission. Segment rotation syncs deferred commit
records first.

Tests count commit syncs: three single submissions force three, a batch of
five forces one, and a fresh host recovers all eight as accepted and pending.
A batch whose first append fails acknowledges nothing and succeeds on retry.

Measured in the guarded worker (Linux VM, release build, filesystem WAL on
the VM disk, 120 frames, one run, frame p50): 8 actions per frame 6.44 ms ->
3.55 ms; 32 actions per frame 22.99 ms -> 10.69 ms. This is unit 1 of #787.

📝 Walkthrough

The filesystem WAL now supports deferred commit syncing and syncs existing segments before recovery reads. The trusted runtime WAL adds batched submission acknowledgements, which use one shared sync and define handling for refusals and storage failures.

Changes: WAL durability and batch acknowledgements

Layer / File(s) Summary
Filesystem commit sync and recovery
crates/warp-core/src/causal_wal.rs, crates/warp-core/tests/causal_wal_hardening_tests.rs, docs/topics/WAL.md, CHANGELOG.md
The filesystem store can defer commit syncs and sync them together. A failed deferred sync blocks further operations on that store instance. Recovery and writer takeover sync existing segments before reading recovered history. Tests and documentation cover these behaviors.
Trusted runtime batch acknowledgements
crates/warp-core/src/trusted_runtime_host.rs, crates/warp-core/tests/trusted_runtime_host_loop_tests.rs, .github/workflows/ci.yml, docs/topics/WAL.md, CHANGELOG.md
The trusted runtime accepts batches using deferred commits and one shared sync. Tests and documentation cover duplicate submissions, pre-storage refusals, storage failures, and recovery. CI runs Clippy and tests for both relevant targets.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 6c3f6

The batch acknowledgement feature appears consistent with its documented durability contract. One remaining gap is in the lower-level filesystem WAL API. If an immediate commit's sync fails while earlier deferred commits are pending, the store does not lock itself. A later successful sync can then report those earlier commits as durable when they may have been lost. The runtime does not use that call order today, so this is a bounded follow-up.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 6c3f6

Batching retains admission controls and returns acknowledgements only after successful synchronization. Storage failures retract newly accepted intake and require reopening before further writes. No introduced security concern was substantiated, but caller-trust assumptions and production crash behavior remain incompletely established.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated changed scope is submission intake within a trusted local host and durability of records in its configured filesystem log. Caller-selected targets still resolve through the existing runtime head and worldline routing. Deployment-wide exposure and tenant isolation cannot be established from this evidence.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — ExactHead routing is documented for control, debug, or admin use, but the shared admission path resolves it without an explicit caller-authority parameter. The full PR base already exposed this behavior through single submission; batching inherits it rather than demonstrating a new authorization bypass. Whether callers are trusted for this routing remains unspecified.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The deferred commit path retains writer-epoch and transaction-capability checks. A failed shared sync cannot produce synchronized-commit evidence and latches the store against further writes. Rotation, manifest publication, and epoch closure synchronize pending commits before advancing durable metadata.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — If app-facing callers are not trusted for administrative target selection, enforce a capability boundary for ExactHead routing. Otherwise, explicitly establish that caller-trust assumption. This addresses an inherited authority-policy ambiguity, not a substantiated batching vulnerability.

Address independent review of batched submission.

An acceptance appended without its own sync was recorded as durable at once,
so a scheduler pass could have admitted an Action whose acceptance was not on
stable storage. Unsynced acceptances are now tracked separately. They stop a
second append of the same submission and are never treated as durable; they
are promoted only after the shared sync, or a later synced commit on the same
segment, succeeds.

Deferral is no longer a store-wide flag that an early return or panic could
leave set. The caller chooses per append whether the commit record is synced,
and one call syncs every deferred record. Closing an epoch and rotating a
segment sync deferred records first. The commit-marker fault point fires only
for a commit that was synced, and a new fault target fails the shared sync.

A failed shared sync is no longer hidden behind an earlier intake error. It
rolls back the in-memory intake of every submission the call accepted and
latches the adapter: further WAL work, and reconciliation from a merely
readable log, are refused with StorageSyncFailed until the host reopens the
WAL.

Tests: sync failure restores the exact runtime, refuses later work, and a
fresh host recovers what storage holds; a repeated envelope inside a batch
appends once; an empty batch forces no sync; deferred commits carry no sync
evidence until synced; a synced commit and an epoch close cover them.

agy review at b57ce566: REQUEST CHANGES — addressed in the latest commit.

Finding Disposition
P0: an unsynced acceptance was recorded as durable, so a tick could admit an Action whose acceptance was not on stable storage Fixed. Unsynced acceptances are tracked separately, are never treated as durable, and are promoted only after the shared sync or a later synced commit on the same segment succeeds. has_submission_acceptance, which tick admission uses, sees durable acceptances only.
P1: a failed sync was swallowed when an earlier intake error existed Fixed. The sync error takes precedence and is returned.
P1: no guard; deferral could stay on after a panic Fixed by removing the sticky flag. The caller chooses per append whether the commit record is synced; one call syncs all deferred records.
P1: close_epoch did not sync deferred commits Fixed. close_epoch and rotate_segment sync deferred records first. Test added.
P2: CommitMarkerSynced fired for an unsynced marker; no fault target for the shared sync Fixed. The marker fault fires only for a synced commit; new DeferredCommitSync target.
P3: conflict with the WAL topic's "no half-visible runtime state" Fixed for the sync-failure case: the in-memory intake of every submission the call accepted is rolled back (exact-state test), and the adapter latches StorageSyncFailed so nothing is reconciled from a merely readable log. For a refused envelope, earlier envelopes are synced and stay fully accepted and durable; the WAL topic now says so.
P3: test gaps Added: failed shared sync; repeated envelope inside a batch; empty batch; deferred commits carry no sync evidence until synced; synced commit and epoch close cover them. Still not covered: a failure on an envelope other than the first, because the fault plan can only fail the next operation.

Guarded worker on the final source: host loop 54; WAL hardening 130; warp-core lib 707 and 737; compare-and-set 7; pipeline 42; fmt and strict Clippy on library and both test targets. Batched frame time is unchanged by the rework (VM disk, 32 actions per frame: 10.72 ms p50). A fresh review of the new head is pending.

Address the second independent review of batched submission.

When an append failed in the middle of a batch, the host reconciled the adapter
from the log, as it does for a single submission. That counted every readable
acceptance as durable, including the earlier acceptances of the same batch
whose sync had not happened yet. If the shared sync then failed, those
acceptances stayed marked durable after their intake was rolled back.

An append error in a deferred batch now fails closed in the same way as a
failed sync: the adapter latches StorageFailed (renamed from
StorageSyncFailed), drops its unsynced acceptances, the in-memory intake of
everything the call accepted is rolled back, and nothing is reconciled from
the log until the host reopens the WAL.

The filesystem store also latches after a failed sync of deferred commit
records. It never evidences those records as synced, and refuses to append,
sync, rotate or close: a later successful sync cannot vouch for what an earlier
sync failed to write.

The fault plan can let a number of operations through before failing, so a
test can fail the second commit of a batch. Hosted CI now runs the trusted
host loop tests and the WAL hardening tests with fault injection enabled; it
ran neither before.

Second agy review at defaece7: REQUEST CHANGES — addressed in d4f7cc12.

Finding Disposition
P1: an append error mid-batch reconciled the adapter from the log, which counted the earlier, still unsynced acceptances of the same batch as durable; a subsequent sync failure left them marked durable Valid, fixed. An append error while syncs are deferred now fails closed like a failed sync: the adapter latches StorageFailed (renamed from StorageSyncFailed), drops its unsynced acceptances, rolls back the intake of everything the call accepted, and reconciles nothing from the log until the WAL is reopened. New test batched_submission_append_failure_fails_closed_until_the_wal_is_reopened commits the first acceptance unsynced, fails the second commit, and checks exact runtime restoration, refusal of a retry, and recovery by a fresh host.
P1: rollback_intent_submission leaves the envelope in HeadInbox::pending Not reproduced. The review cites inbox.ingest(envelope) at coordinator.rs:3025; that is the body of WorldlineRuntime::ingest, a different function. submit_intent_inner (coordinator.rs:2706) calls would_accept and records the witnessed submission; it never ingests into an inbox. An envelope reaches an inbox only through ticketed ingress during a scheduler pass. Both failure tests also compare the whole runtime's debug rendering, heads and inboxes included, before and after.
P2: the store kept deferred transaction ids after a failed sync, so a later sync would evidence them Valid, fixed. After a failed deferred sync the store drops those ids, never evidences them, and refuses to append, sync, rotate or close until reopened. Test filesystem_failed_deferred_sync_is_never_evidenced_and_closes_the_store.
P3: commits() shows unsynced commit records Documented on the method: it returns what the log holds, not what is durable.
P4: single-run VM figures in a commit message Accepted as stated. The figures are labelled as one run in a VM; the commit cannot be amended under this repository's rules.

Also in this commit: the fault plan can let n operations through before failing, which closes the earlier gap (no test could fail an envelope other than the first); and hosted CI now runs trusted_runtime_host_loop_tests and causal_wal_hardening_tests with fault injection enabled. It ran neither with that feature before, so none of this PR's failure tests were enforced by CI.

Guarded worker on the final source: host loop 54; WAL hardening 130 (default) and 131 (host_test); warp-core lib 707 and 737; compare-and-set 7; pipeline 42; fmt; strict Clippy on the library in three feature sets and on both test targets.

Address review: after a failed sync the failure was remembered only in
memory. A host that reopened the WAL read the still-readable records and
reported them as durable acceptances without their ever having been synced; a
later power loss could lose a submission that had been acknowledged as a
duplicate of a durable one. The same held for a writer that had simply stopped
between writing a record and syncing it.

A filesystem writer that takes the writer lock now syncs every segment file,
and the directory that names it, before it reads the log as recovered history.
If that sync fails the writer does not take the log over.

Tests: a record left unsynced is synced on takeover; an injected sync failure
refuses the takeover.

Address the third independent review of batched submission.

After a failed deferred sync the store refused whole-transaction appends, but
the lower-level port that coordinators write through, append_frame and
flush_commit, was not guarded. A commit flushed that way would have been
evidenced as synced on a store that had just failed a sync. Both are refused
now.

A deferred batch latched the adapter on any append error, including one raised
before anything reached storage. Storage had not failed in that case, and the
adapter stayed unusable until reopened. Only a storage error latches now. An
append refused before storage rebuilds the writer cursor from the log, and
that rebuild no longer counts a readable acceptance as durable while its sync
is still owed. The intents before the refusal are synced and stay accepted.

Third agy review at d4f7cc12: REQUEST CHANGES — addressed in the latest commit. That review also read the code behind the disputed claim from round two and found that submit_intent_inner never ingests into an inbox, so no envelope is left behind by rollback.

Finding Disposition
P3: after a failed deferred sync, append_frame and flush_commit on the store port were not guarded, so a commit written that way would be evidenced as synced Fixed. Both check the latch. The store-level test now writes through the port after the failure and checks that it is refused and that no sync evidence appears.
P4: an append error raised before anything reached storage latched the adapter although storage had not failed Fixed. Only a storage error latches. A refusal before storage rebuilds the writer cursor from the log; that rebuild no longer counts a readable acceptance as durable while its sync is still owed. New test batched_submission_refused_before_storage_keeps_earlier_intents_and_the_wal: the earlier intent is synced and stays accepted, the WAL keeps working, and the refused intents are accepted on retry.

Between the second and third reviews, a Codex thread found that a reopened host trusted readable-but-unsynced records as durable. That is fixed in df8e5bab: a writer that takes over a log syncs its segment files first, and does not take over if that sync fails.

Guarded worker on the final source: host loop 55; WAL hardening 130 (default) and 132 (host_test); warp-core lib 714 and 744; compare-and-set 7; pipeline 42; fmt; strict Clippy on the library in three feature sets and on both test targets. Address review.

After a storage failure the running adapter still answered recover_read_only
and recover_evidence_catalog_read_only from the log. It could report the batch
it had just rolled back as accepted and pending, and return a recovery
certificate over records it does not know to be durable. Both now refuse with
StorageFailed.

publish_manifest synced and renamed a manifest without first syncing commit
records whose sync was deferred. A power loss could keep a manifest that names
a commit the segment lost. Publication now syncs deferred commits first.

Address the fourth independent review of batched submission.

A host opened an existing log, ran recovery and read its acceptances before
the writer lock was taken and the segments were synced. The adapter now syncs
existing segments when it opens the store, before any recovery read, and does
not open a log it cannot sync.

An append refused before storage rebuilt the writer cursor only for the
filesystem store. The in-memory adapter kept an empty context index and
refused every later append while reporting itself healthy. The cursor is now
rebuilt for both stores.

truncate_tail_after is refused after a failed deferred sync, like the other
store writes.

Fourth agy review at 0f266786: REQUEST CHANGES — addressed in the latest commit. The review verified the durability posture of unsynced acceptances and the fail-closed latch, and found three gaps.

Finding Disposition
P1: an append refused before storage rebuilt the writer cursor only for the filesystem store, so an in-memory adapter kept an empty context index and refused every later append while reporting itself healthy Fixed. The cursor is rebuilt for both stores. Test batched_submission_refused_before_storage_keeps_an_in_memory_wal_usable.
P2: publish_manifest and truncate_tail_after were not refused after a failed deferred sync Fixed. publish_manifest now syncs deferred commits first (which checks the latch; from a Codex thread, commit 1ea3c6a3), and truncate_tail_after checks the latch. The store-level test exercises both.
P2: a host ran recovery and read acceptances before the writer lock was taken and the segments were synced, contrary to the WAL topic Fixed. The adapter syncs existing segments when it opens the store, before any recovery read, and does not open a log it cannot sync. Test a_host_does_not_open_a_log_it_cannot_sync. Not changed: writable recovery (which can truncate a torn tail) still runs before the writer lock is taken. That order predates this PR and changing it is a separate change to writer takeover.

Guarded worker on the final source: host loop 57; WAL hardening 131 (default) and 133 (host_test); warp-core lib 719 and 749; default-feature integration tests; compare-and-set 7; pipeline 42; fmt; strict Clippy on the library in three feature sets and on both test targets.

refused and no CommitFileSynced entry is recorded for the deferred transaction.

Fifth agy review at 6c3f6fb3: APPROVE. "There are no P0, P1, or P2 defects in this PR's own changes." Two P4 observations about code that predates this PR, neither blocking: writable recovery (possible torn-tail truncation) runs before the writer lock is taken in TrustedRuntimeWal::from_config; and the evidence-catalog rebuild anchor in refresh_cursor_from_store_for_writer is read before the cursor is updated. Both are recorded on #787.

Since that head, main (#792, #794) was merged in; the only conflict was CHANGELOG.md. Revalidated in the guarded worker on the merge: host loop 57; WAL hardening 131 and 133; warp-core lib 719 and 749; default-feature integration tests; compare-and-set 7; pipeline 42; fmt; strict Clippy.

Address review.

A synced commit whose sync failed left earlier deferred records pending, and a
later successful sync would have evidenced them, although the failed sync had
covered them too. The store now latches in that case, as it does after a
failed deferred sync.

Truncation is refused while a commit sync is owed. It could remove a deferred
record, and a later sync would then evidence a record the log no longer holds.

After a storage failure the host no longer returns its cached causal frontier
as a basis. That frontier can name records that are not durable.

CHANGELOG.md; both sides are retained.

Address review: seal_segment returned a seal covering a transaction whose
commit record had not been synced. rotate_segment already synced first; the
direct sealing surface did not.

Address review: the live catalog had already observed transactions whose sync
then failed, and kept a Fresh posture, so its accessors still offered exact
committed segments for a batch the host had rolled back.

On a storage failure the adapter now drops the catalog and reports
NeedsRebuild, naming the last commit that a successful sync is known to cover.

Delta reviews (agy): APPROVE at 1b37d17f and again at a1903e8b, each stating no P0–P2 defect in the delta. The second listed every WalStorePort method and public FilesystemWalStore method with its disposition while a deferred commit sync is owed.

One commit since: on a storage failure the adapter drops the live evidence catalog and reports NeedsRebuild (from a Codex thread). Guarded worker on that head: host loop 57; WAL hardening 133 and 136; warp-core lib 719 and 749; default-feature integration tests; compare-and-set 7; pipeline 42; fmt; strict Clippy.

Batched submission landed in #791. Correct the status line and the current
implementation section, and replace the proposal that a later sync may make a
failed batch durable: a later sync cannot vouch for records an earlier sync
failed to write, so the host takes the batch back and must reopen the WAL.
