docs(design): revise DL-0159 after review - #383
Conversation
Review ruling: enhance. Approve schema 2's direction; correct before freezing it; withdraw the previous save and recovery guarantees. - Identity follows Echo's ContentAddressV1; a head's id commits to the fact it stores and its actual edges, including the empty-root case. - New accepted host basis (Buffer -> HostBasis) with explicit transitions; lastExport only records what Jim last exported. - Filesystem claims separated: observation, attribution, exclusion. v1 export is best effort and says so; an exclusive profile obstructs when unavailable. Recovery classifies observations and never invents an Export. One unresolved, fenced export per file binding. - Explicit v1 resource envelope; ResourceLimitExceeded, ClosureInsufficient and MalformedRope stay distinct. - Reachability starts at the worldline root; retained material is named and acquired before the operation that needs it. - Path classification by observable mechanics; the divergence barrier follows the disputed dependency. - Two acceptance gates: representation and file crossing. Drafts: ContentAddressV1 helper, HostBasis fact and edges, head identity from stored fact and edges, author-side effect normalization, envelope check, closure failures classified. Draft README drift repaired. Owner issues: echo#926 echo#927 echo#928 edict#260 edict#261 edict#262 edict#263 #377 #378; ideas #379-#382.

@codex review please, focus on whether DL-0159 now satisfies each MUST in the review (filesystem claims, accepted host basis, export lifecycle, ContentAddressV1 identity incl. empty head, resource envelope and failure classes, worldline-root reachability, retained material, classification and barrier, two gates), and whether the draft .edict changes match the document. |

Review comments at @docs/design/0159-edict-rope-representation.md:
- Line 171: Update the jedit.text.buffer reachability design to support multiple
buffers from the worldline root by defining a unique per-buffer attachment
identity or traversable collection, consistent with Echo’s source-and-edge-type
slot identity. Extend the reachability fixture to explicitly specify two buffers
and their distinct reachable attachments.
Review comments at @edict/replace-range/draft/Reference.edict:
- Around line 77-80: Update the reference edit flow around newHeadId to omit the
Root edge and empty Text node effect when the edit deletes all text, producing a
rootless empty Head per DL-0159. Also adjust the read path around the existing
Head/root lookup so a rootless empty Head is accepted and remains usable by the
next edit.

## Cycle Doctrine
A good jedit design doc is specific enough that another engineer or agent can
write the RED test from it without asking what behavior is supposed to exist. A
bad design doc mostly says that a document exists, a feature would be nice, or a
user will be happier, without naming the contract, failure mode, lower mode, or
proof.

108-114: 🎯 Functional CorrectnessThe proposed closure contract for an absent
Rootis not established by the supplied source. The draft defines a rootless emptyHead, then passesheadReftoecho.closure, but no inspected contract states whether that call returnsTree::Emptyor fails. The requested explicit empty-head branch is therefore not supported as a required fix.edict/replace-range/draft/Text.edict: 1
85-86: 🎯 Functional CorrectnessSpecify the
contentAddressedge-order contract.ContentAddressV1 hashes edges in edge-type ID and target-ID order.
contentIdpasses its list directly toecho.contentAddress, but the proposed Edict primitive does not state whether it sorts the list or requires preordered input. Define this contract. If it requires preordered input, sort incontentIdand add vectors for both edge orders.
Second review ruling: approve the architecture; correct four points. - Overwrite carries two preconditions: expectedAcceptedBasis (B's identity and generation, deciding outcome applicability) and expectedHostContents (the observed H it replaces), with overwriteAuthority bound to H's observation. H is never accepted to pass the check; a confirmed Overwrite of S advances the basis from B to S. - Observation ordering and applicability: observations name their file binding and receiving basis, record order where the adapter can, and an older or unordered observation cannot replace the current host view, head, or conflict judgment; adoption revalidates or re-observes. The generation orders Jim's transitions, not observations. - The worldline-root attachment is conceptual, its layout pending echo#927 (index first); the fixture attaches two buffers. - Cost model counts the replacement tree's K leaves and K - 1 branches, K being fromBytes's actual leaf count, plus boundary and join reconstruction; construction work is separate from emitted effects; measurement covers sizes just above split thresholds. Also: branch normalization compares the stored definition (fact and child ids); the oracle compares within the shared supported domain; Reference.edict omits Root for empty text and uses its own resource profile; drafts build records explicitly instead of record spread; every draft construct has an owner issue (edict#264-#267 filed).

Brings in #376. CHANGELOG keeps both entries.
Review ruling on DL-0159: enhance. Approve schema 2's direction, correct it before freezing, and withdraw the previous save and recovery guarantees. This revision applies every MUST and SHOULD; schema 2 stays unfrozen until the representation gate passes.
ExportGuaranteeUnavailablewhen the adapter can't exclude writers. Recovery classifiesIntendedContentObserved/PriorContentObserved/DifferentContentObserved, records whether the write's occurrence is witnessed or unknown, and never invents anExport.HostBasisfact andBuffer → acceptedHostBasisedge with the transition table (import, hold, adopt, agreement, reconcile, confirmed export), bound to evidence and ageneration.lastExportonly records what Jim last exported.ContentAddressV1. The draft head id now commits to the storedHeadFactand its actual edges (anchor, plus root when non-empty). Author-side normalization before emitting effects; the bridge keeps rejecting duplicates.ResourceLimitExceeded,ClosureInsufficient,MalformedRopestay distinct.
