Transition framing

This issue supersedes the legacy card migrated from docs/method/backlog/cool-ideas/PROCESS_github-milestone-lane-sync.md.

After the GitHub Issues transition, Method lanes are labels. GitHub milestones should not also mean lanes.

Rule

Labels classify Method workflow state. Milestones group release or delivery scope.

Canonical lane labels:

  • lane:inbox
  • lane:asap
  • lane:bad-code
  • lane:cool-ideas
  • lane:release

Milestones may represent versions, releases, or externally meaningful delivery buckets. They should not replace lane:* labels or create a second source of truth for lane membership.

Contract

Define how Method tooling reads and displays GitHub milestones alongside Method labels.

Acceptance criteria

  • An issue can have a Method lane label and a release milestone without ambiguity.
  • lane:release means the work is in the release lane; the milestone names which release, if any.
  • Query/status surfaces do not infer lane from milestone alone.
  • Documentation warns against using milestones as a hidden Method lane system.
