Next Work Menu from Method-labeled GitHub Issues #50

Open

Description

@flyingrobots

Transition framing

This issue supersedes the legacy card migrated from docs/method/backlog/cool-ideas/PROCESS_next-work-menu.md.

The next-work menu should rank Method-labeled GitHub Issues, not filesystem backlog files.

Contract

Ship a bounded advisory surface such as method next [--json] [--limit <n>] that answers: "what looks like the next sensible work items?"

The output should be a small menu, not an authoritarian single answer.

Primary signals:

  • lane:* labels, with lane:asap first by default
  • work-in-progress exclusion or explicit warning
  • priority:* labels
  • blocked/needs-design/needs-witness labels
  • release milestone pressure
  • relevant signpost hints from docs/BEARING.md only when mechanically detectable

Acceptance criteria

  • The menu reads GitHub Issues as the canonical work queue.
  • The menu is deterministic and explainable.
  • Each recommendation includes issue number, title, URL, labels, and why_now signals.
  • The command warns when an active work-in-progress issue exists.
  • The output remains advisory and does not auto-assign or auto-move work.

You can configure auto-planning by selecting labels in the issue_enrichment configuration.

To disable automatic issue enrichment, add the following to your .coderabbit.yaml:

      auto_enrich:
        enabled: false
