Replace the existing definition of SPIM (FBbi:00000369) by a slightly more precise one, accompanied by a reference.

Also rename the term so that we use the fully expanded name (selective plane illumination [fluorescence] microscopy) instead of the acronym. The acronym is relegated to an exact synonym.

Replace the existing definition of SPIM (FBbi:00000369) by a slightly
more precise one, accompanied by a reference.

Also rename the term so that we use the fully expanded name (selective
plane illumination [fluorescence] microscopy) instead of the acronym.
The acronym is relegated to an exact synonym.

maybe that is one of those cases where the acronym is more well known than its expansion?

if we are going for a new label without acronyms, perhaps "light-sheet fluorescence microscopy" would be more familiar, or even just "light-sheet microscopy"

Even SPIM resources (say https://mesospim.org/#) use "light-sheet microscope" and not "selective plane illumination microscope".

if we are going for a new label without acronyms

Yes. I know there are lot of terms in the ontology right now whose label is an acronym, but that’s precisely something we will have to change over time. Acronyms are not suitable as labels, even if they are widely known and used within a given field, because they are likely to be (1) completely obscure outside of the field and (2) clashing with other concepts in other fields that happen to have the same acronym.

The label should always be the most precise, fully expanded name – even if it means the label might be long and may not in fact correspond to the name that people are routinely using when they talk about the referred concept.

"light-sheet fluorescence microscopy" would be more familiar, or even just "light-sheet microscopy"

That’s what synonyms are for. I’ll add those to the term.

ok! I think then after adding the synonyms we can merge

SPIM is more widely known as "light-sheet [fluorescence] microscopy", so
we add synonyms accordingly.
