fix(proxies): keep the running copy when a redeploy's tunnel cannot start - #19
…tart
deployProxied removed the old pair before the new tunnel started, so a tunnel
that failed to start left no copy. The new tunnel now starts as <name>-next
beside the running copy; once it has an exit, the old pair goes and the tunnel
is renamed, under a lock the status read shares. The status read skips staged
tunnels and sweeps stale ones. Mirrors GeiserX/CashPilot#632.
Proxied redeployment now starts a staged tunnel and verifies its exit before removing the running earner and tunnel. Status excludes staged tunnels, and cleanup removes staged tunnels that are at least five minutes old.
Changes: Proxied redeployment
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Staged tunnel identity and rename support internal/runtime/proxied.go, internal/runtime/proxied_test.go
Adds a -next staging name, preserves the final hostname for staged tunnels, and adds Docker container rename support. Updates test support and the expected deployment sequence.
Redeployment, status, and staged-tunnel cleanup internal/runtime/proxied.go, internal/runtime/proxied_test.go, CHANGELOG.md
A replacement tunnel must prove an exit before the old pair is removed. The swap and status read share a lock. Status omits staged tunnels, and cleanup removes staged tunnels that are at least five minutes old. Tests cover failure preservation, promotion order, status exclusion, cleanup, and staged-name conflicts. The changelog records the redeployment change.
geiresx/CashPilot-Desktop#8: Validates proxy settings and the tunnel image before removing an existing copy. This PR also changes when the running copy is removed.
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 0d5f9
A long-running proxied redeploy could lose its running copy during cleanup. Coordinate cleanup with active deployments before merging.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 0d5f9
Staging protects the running copy when its replacement tunnel cannot start. However, concurrent removal can miss the staged replacement, allowing it to become active after its ownership record has been deleted. Existing container isolation remains in place, and no new remote entrypoint or privilege expansion was identified.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: Concurrent removal can leave a replacement running after its ownership record is deleted. While the new tunnel waits under its -next name, RemoveProxied inspects only final names and can remove the old pair successfully. The service then deletes the copy record, but deployment can still promote the staged tunnel and start its earner without rechecking ownership. The missing record allows the proxy-deletion guard to pass; deleting that proxy also removes it from the traffic-cap enforcement loop. The base already had a pre-creation race, but an existing replacement tunnel was final-named and removable during readiness. Staging materially extends the window in which removal misses the replacement. This requires overlapping management operations, not a newly exposed remote attack path.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The identified interleaving requires access to existing management operations for a configured service and proxy. Its immediate scope is that local copy, its retained proxy credentials, and the proxy's ownership and traffic-cap controls. The evidence does not establish cross-tenant access or new host-level authority.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A possible sequence is staged readiness, successful removal of the final-name pair and copy record, proxy deletion, then staged promotion and earner startup. Deployment retains the already-loaded proxy settings and does not revalidate the deleted record before promotion. Subsequent traffic-cap processing iterates stored proxies, so deletion can leave this running copy outside that enforcement loop. This sequence is source-derived, not runtime-reproduced.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Existing controls remain: the manager validates deployment eligibility and cap state; proxy settings are provisioned through secret files; the sidecar retains restricted capabilities, a read-only root filesystem, and no-new-privileges. The earner shares the tunnel namespace, has no autonomous restart policy, and is refused capabilities that could bypass its firewall. Staging does not itself widen these permissions.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The new tests assert preservation of the old pair on readiness failure, staged-name filtering, stale-stage cleanup, and serialization of two deployments. They do not cover deployment concurrent with ownership-record deletion. The failed-promotion test starts without an existing pair, so it demonstrates staged cleanup rather than recovery of a previously running pair.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Coordinate deployment and removal through a shared per-copy lifecycle or generation check that also governs ownership-record deletion. Promotion should verify that the copy is still desired and its proxy remains valid, so a completed removal cannot be followed by activation of an older in-flight replacement.

Exclude active staged tunnels from the sweep.
With a context longer than five minutes, Docker provisioning can leave a staged tunnel active past the cutoff. The status sweep runs outside proxiedSwap, so it can remove that tunnel while deployment removes the old pair. Promotion then fails and the running copy is gone. Track active stages until promotion or cleanup.

Update sweepTestTunnels to skip staged tunnels that are actively being
provisioned, and track active stages until promotion or cleanup so the sweep
cannot remove a running tunnel during deployment. Coordinate this tracking with
proxiedSwap and the sweep without weakening the existing stale-age check for
inactive staged tunnels.
This test sets renameErr before its first deploy. No running pair exists, so the test does not exercise failure after the old pair is removed. Deploy successfully first, then set renameErr and redeploy. This will test cleanup in the state described by the test comment. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the test containing the `renameErr` setup to first deploy successfully,
then set `renameErr` and call `deployProxied` again. Keep the existing error
assertion so the test exercises failed promotion during redeployment with an old
pair already running.
