fix(proxies): retry a copy the cap reset could not start, so it does not sit out a whole period - #20
Review mirror of GeiserX#268 (CodeRabbit is rate-limited there). Findings are fixed on the real PR; this one is closed after.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Copies stopped by a traffic cap are retried during the once-a-minute pass while the proxy is uncapped if they fail to restart after a cap reset. Retries continue until a copy starts successfully or is no longer marked as stopped by the cap. Retries do not run while the cap is active. Running copies are left alone, and manually stopped copies are not restarted automatically. When a retry succeeds, the cap-stopped status is cleared.
…e while uncapped
A reset whose start failed left the copy marked as the cap's and stopped until
the next reset or a Start by hand. ProxyTick now starts marked copies that are
down while the proxy is uncapped. Mirrors GeiserX/CashPilot#630.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
On uncapped ticks, ProxyTick retries starting copies marked as stopped by the cap when they remain down. Failed starts keep the mark and record a masked error event. Successful starts clear the mark. Manually stopped copies are not restarted.
Changes: Cap-stopped copy retry

Summary
Tick retry behavior and validation internal/services/proxies.go, internal/services/proxies_test.go, docs/proxies.md, CHANGELOG.md
ProxyTick retries marked, down copies on uncapped ticks. Failed starts keep the cap-stopped mark and record a masked error event; successful starts clear the mark. Tests cover a failed reset-time start followed by a retry, and confirm that a manually stopped copy remains stopped. The documentation and changelog describe the retry behavior.
A copy can run briefly while capped or remain stopped after the cap resets. Fix the start/stop ordering and cap-mark update before merging.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 61b22
Automatic recovery is useful, but cap enforcement and retry completion do not follow the same ordering protocol. Concurrent actions can temporarily restart a capped copy or lose the information needed to recover it later. The inspected changes retain the existing proxy tunnel protections and do not introduce broader privileges.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: A new automatic retry can start a copy after another tick has persisted its traffic cap and completed a cap-driven stop. The retry checks the cap while holding copyLock, but cap-state updates and stopCapped do not participate in that lock. A cap transition can therefore occur between the check and provider start. The synchronization gap predates this PR, but recurring uncapped-tick retries add a new route through it. A later capped tick can stop the copy again, limiting the demonstrated impact to a temporary failure of the configured usage control rather than an established network-isolation bypass.
Medium · reliability · inferred: The new retry completion can erase a newer cap-stop decision. retryCapStart releases copyLock before its caller unconditionally clears stopped_by_cap; the running-copy cleanup also clears that field without coordinating with cap-driven stopping. A concurrent stopCapped can stop the copy and set the mark immediately before either clear. The resulting stopped, unmarked copy is ineligible for both reset recovery and subsequent retries. This is an introduced recovery and state-ownership failure, distinct from the pre-existing reset snapshot race.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
observed — The affected control domain is the local machine's recorded copies under a proxy. A cap crossing targets every recorded copy for that proxy; retries address individual persisted proxy-ID/slug pairs rather than adding authority over new assets.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The supported failure path is concurrent local control activity: a retry passes its cap check, another tick caps and stops the copy, and the retry subsequently starts it. User-triggered ticks can overlap the background ticker. No remote attacker entrypoint or privilege gain was established by this inspection.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The retry uses the persisted proxy definition and existing provider start path. That path prepares proxy secrets, starts the tunnel, waits for readiness, and only then starts or restarts the earner. The inspected retry flow introduces no direct-network fallback.
observed — For an owner stop completed before retry's locked recheck, the shared copy mutex and cleared persisted mark prevent retry from overriding that decision. This is meaningful counterevidence, but it does not cover cap-driven stops that bypass the mutex.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Capped ticks repeatedly stop copies still reported running, providing eventual containment of an overlapping start while the application remains active. This mitigates duration but does not make cap enforcement and retry completion atomic.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Use one ordered transition protocol for owner operations, cap-driven stops, recovery starts, and provenance updates. Associate a successful-start clear with the stop generation it consumed so it cannot erase a newer cap-stop decision.

…ore a cap retry
An owner Start or Stop, a reset's start and the tick's retry of one copy now
take that copy's own lock, so unrelated copies never wait on a slow retry. The
retry reloads the proxy under the lock (new settings reach the copy, a returned
cap stops it), and the own-IP lookup runs once per pass.

Serialize cap stops with the per-copy lock.
A retry can pass its cap check before another tick records a cap. stopCapped can then stop the copy while the retry starts it, leaving it running during the cap until a later tick stops it again.
Hold copyLock around each cap stop, its mark update, and its compensating start.

Serialize each cap stop with the per-copy lock in the stopCapped flow: hold
copyLock for the copy across stopping it, updating its capped state, and any
compensating start. Coordinate this with releaseCapped’s existing locked start
path so a retry cannot start a copy between the cap check and stop.
