Reports are sent every 15 minutes, with additional runs when the app opens or server details change. Report and earnings details are saved between app sessions.
Battery optimization settings now open Android’s app list, where you can optionally select CashPilot to help reports arrive on time.
The app no longer requires a permanent notification or foreground service.
Documentation
Updated setup, troubleshooting, and feature information to reflect the new reporting schedule and optional battery settings.
…y restricts
The heartbeat ran every 30 s from a special-use foreground service and the app
asked for REQUEST_IGNORE_BATTERY_OPTIMIZATIONS through the direct dialog. Play
allows that permission only for chat, VoIP, safety, automation and peripheral
apps, and a special-use service needs a justification this app does not have.
Heartbeats now run on WorkManager every 15 minutes, plus once on app open and
on a server URL or key change. The last report and earnings are kept on disk so
the dashboard survives process death, and it says how old the last report is.
The battery button opens the settings list, which needs no permission.
BackgroundPolicyTest checks the merged manifest and the real schedule.
The app replaces its foreground heartbeat service with WorkManager reports on a 15-minute schedule and immediate runs on app opening or server-detail changes. It persists heartbeat results, updates battery-optimization settings and permission declarations, and revises related tests and documentation.

Summary

The new Heartbeat singleton sends reports and manages persisted heartbeat and earnings state. Tests now reference Heartbeat; the notification drawable and notification-related test are removed.
CashPilotApp restores heartbeat state and schedules periodic work. HeartbeatWorker runs every 15 minutes; app opening and server-detail changes enqueue immediate work. The previous service and boot receiver are removed. Tests and documentation describe the new schedule.
The manifest removes battery-exemption and foreground-service permission declarations. The settings screens open Android’s battery-optimization list. Tests check the permission policy, and setup guidance describes optimization as optional.
The change moves heartbeats to WorkManager. Several docs still describe the old foreground service, notification and retry backoff, which can mislead users and maintainers. Update them before or shortly after merge; the app's behavior is not affected.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 7b083
Periodic and immediate background reports share credentials and status without a common execution or request-identity guard. Overlapping runs can apply stale authentication results and overwrite newer settings or credentials. The demonstrated scope is one app installation; broader server-side privileges and exploitation are not established.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: Periodic and immediate workers can overlap without a shared request-identity guard. A late enrollment response writes its captured complete settings snapshot, and a late 401 clears whichever worker key is current. Older requests can therefore overwrite newer endpoint or credential decisions, or discard a newly adopted key and trigger bootstrap-key fallback. The stale-update primitives already existed, but the new independent execution paths expand their exposure to concurrent heartbeat results. Backend acceptance of mismatched credentials is not established.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated state-integrity exposure is within one Android installation: its configured endpoint, bootstrap and worker credentials, report history, and outgoing monitored-app/device data. Exploitation requires an applicable overlapping response or reconfiguration sequence; no unauthenticated cross-device entrypoint or server-side privilege expansion is established.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — An older in-flight request can complete after another run adopts a credential or after configuration changes. Its enrollment callback can restore its older settings snapshot; its 401 recovery can erase a newer worker key, causing subsequent authentication to fall back to the shared bootstrap key. Independent periodic and immediate work permit this interleaving. This supports the concurrency concern, not a verified cross-tenant exploit.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The configured server is trusted to issue a nonblank worker key. The client attaches the selected bearer credential only after its initial URL gate. Neither the base nor head sender explicitly configures redirect policy, so credential handling across redirects remains unresolved external behavior rather than an established PR-introduced vulnerability.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — DataStore serialization protects individual settings transactions, but not request ownership: the enrollment transform ignores the current settings object, and 401 recovery does not compare the rejected key with the current key. Likewise, replacing immediate work does not serialize it against periodic work. These limits explain why existing local controls do not contain the stale-response concern.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Establish one heartbeat execution owner and bind authentication-result updates to the request's endpoint and credential generation. Within the current settings transaction, update only the worker key when ownership still matches; clear a rejected key only if it remains the current key.
proposed — Define report ownership when the configured server or account changes. Namespace or invalidate durable earnings and status by that identity so prior-server data is not carried indefinitely into a new configuration. This is an ownership-hardening proposal, not a verified cross-account disclosure.

Remove the stale notification instructions.
This PR removes the foreground service, the notification, and POST_NOTIFICATIONS. The guide still says three wrong things:
Line 16 says Android 13+ asks to show notifications on first launch and that the app keeps a quiet notification. The app asks for nothing and posts nothing.
Line 34 says a CashPilot notification stays in the shade and shows "Monitoring apps..." or "3/4 apps running".
Line 35 says the summary shows Last heartbeat. The string is now "Last report … · sent every 15 min".
A user who follows these steps will look for a notification that never appears and may think the install failed.
📝 Proposed fix
-3. On Android 13 and later, the first launch asks to show notifications. Allow it: the app keeps one quiet notification while it monitors, and without the permission you cannot see it.
-- A notification titled **CashPilot** stays in the shade. Without a server it reads **Monitoring apps...**; with one it reads, for example, **3/4 apps running** after each heartbeat.-- With a server, the dashboard's summary shows a green dot and **Last heartbeat** with a time, and ...+- With a server, the dashboard's summary shows a green dot and **Last report** with its age, for example "Last report 6 min ago · sent every 15 min", and ...

Update the "Heartbeat failed — retrying..." entry.
The page says the bold texts are what the app shows. The retry text and the growing wait ("up to 4 minutes apart") no longer exist. HeartbeatWorker returns success after a failure, and the next 15-minute period is the retry. Rewrite the symptom to match the dashboard text and replace the retry sentence with the new timing.
📝 Proposed fix
-The app retries with a growing wait, up to 4 minutes apart with the default interval.+The app tries again at the next 15-minute report, or when you open the app or change the server URL or key.

failure backoff, a heartbeat service, and refusal-text notifications. Describe

WorkManager maintains the schedule across phone restarts.
