Review mirror of GeiserX#102.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Remote build environments now retain Maven artifacts between runs, so those artifacts remain available to subsequent builds. The documented contents of the remote build root have also been updated to include the Maven artifact directory.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

The remote Gradle script now documents m2/ in the build root and mounts that directory at /root/.m2 in the Docker container.

Changes: Remote Gradle Maven cache

Layer / File(s) Summary
Document and mount the Maven cache
scripts/remote-gradle.sh
The build-root contents include m2/. The Docker command mounts $REMOTE_ROOT/m2 at /root/.m2.

Estimated code review effort: 1 (Trivial) | ~4 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: Low · up to 4ee16

An interrupted artifact download can cause later remote tests to fail until the cached JAR is removed. Fix staging or accept this bounded risk before merging.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 4ee16

The change adds a persistent, writable dependency cache without changing the remote execution model. No introduced security vulnerability was established. The remaining risk depends on whether the build directory is private to one trust domain and how interrupted or concurrent builds affect cached artifacts.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated incremental exposure is the configured host m2 directory and later builds reusing that directory. Broader tenant, service, release, or environment exposure cannot be established without the host sharing policy and downstream-consumer configuration.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — Build-controlled code can now modify Maven state that survives into later runs. This could cross a trust boundary if differently trusted builds share the directory, but such sharing is unverified. The strongest counterevidence is that the base already allowed the same build execution to modify persistent Gradle, SDK, and source directories; this PR does not demonstrate a new privilege tier or downstream consumer.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Cache integrity and recovery are delegated to dependency tooling and host operation. The runner itself cannot establish atomic artifact publication or reject incomplete or modified cache entries after interruption or concurrent execution; no resulting security failure was verified.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define the build root as private to one trust domain, keep reusable artifacts separate from credential-bearing Maven configuration, and document a safe cache reset procedure for interrupted or suspect builds. These are precautionary controls, not verified deficiencies in the deployed host.

Keep staging on the cache filesystem.

Robolectric stages the JAR in /tmp, then copies it across this mount. If the container stops during that copy, the persistent cache can contain a partial JAR. Later runs accept the existing file without validating it and continue to fail. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Set the test JVM’s java.io.tmpdir to a directory inside /root/.m2, so installation can use an atomic rename.
