Review mirror of the upstream PR on GeiserX/CashPilot, for CodeRabbit. Fixes land on the upstream PR.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Behavior Changes
    • Podman workers are identified and reported as unsupported for network isolation. With automatic isolation, earners remain on Podman’s default network without fencing; explicitly enabling isolation prevents deployment.
    • Turning isolation off or using an operator-provided network retains precedence.
    • The fleet page and isolation check now explain Podman’s isolation status.
  • Documentation
    • Updated isolation guidance to describe Podman’s behavior and list Rootless Docker as untested.

…ce they cannot hold

Podman's Docker-compatible API drops the network options the fence relies
on (the interface name, masquerade off, inter-container traffic off), so on
a Podman worker every fenced deploy failed the network check, and a fresh
install defaults to fenced.

The worker now detects Podman from /version and resolves to a new
unsupported mode: earners deploy on Podman's default network, the fleet page
and the isolation check say they are not fenced, and turning isolation on is
refused with the reason. With CASHPILOT_ISOLATION=on a deploy is refused
before the running container is touched, since the fence was asked for.

Walkthrough

Podman is detected from engine version metadata and assigned an unsupported isolation mode under specified settings. Deploys, reconciliation, and enable actions handle that mode. Isolation findings, the fleet page, and documentation report that Podman earners remain on the default network without a fence.

Changes: Podman Isolation Handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Podman detection and mode selection
app/lan_fence.py, tests/test_lan_fence.py
The code detects Podman from engine version metadata and selects unsupported mode after operator-network and explicit-off handling. Tests add engine version fixtures.
Deploy, reconcile, and enable behavior
app/lan_fence.py, tests/test_lan_fence.py
Deploys use Podman’s default network unless isolation is explicitly on, when deployment is refused before the running container is touched. Reconciliation records unsupported status, and enable rejects Podman. Tests cover these behaviors and mode precedence.
Isolation status and documentation
app/isolation_check.py, app/templates/fleet.html, docs/isolation-check.md, docs/isolation.md
Isolation findings identify LAN and host reachability for bridge earners on Podman’s default network. The fleet page and documentation report Podman’s unfenced status.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: Low · up to a5901

A transient version-query failure could block a Podman deployment. This is a bounded risk to address or explicitly accept before merging.

Security architecture risk: High · up to a5901

Podman workloads can now start without network isolation by default. Malicious or compromised workload code could attempt connections to host and LAN services unless separate network controls block them. Explicit isolation-on still refuses these deployments, and the fleet page clearly warns about the limitation.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · inferred: Automatic mode now admits Podman bridge workloads without applying the LAN fence, including when isolation was previously recorded as enabled. Unlike explicit off, this downgrade requires no separate opt-out. Malicious or compromised earner code could use ordinary network connections to attack reachable host or LAN services without escaping its container. Explicit on and independently managed network controls constrain the exposure; warnings disclose it but do not enforce containment.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The independently attackable scope is each affected Podman worker's reachable network: host services, LAN assets, and other endpoints permitted by its networking and external controls. Multiple workloads on such a worker inherit the unfenced default. Evidence does not establish compromise of other workers, every deployment environment, or any particular data store.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The relevant attack path starts with malicious or compromised code inside a deployed third-party earner. Under Podman auto mode, network selection bypasses CashPilot's fence application and starts the workload on default networking, permitting connection attempts toward reachable host or LAN targets without a container escape. This is an introduced containment risk, not a verified exploit; actual access depends on the runtime and independent firewall controls.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — For the managed bridge path, explicit isolation-on rejects detected Podman before replacement. Operator-managed networking takes precedence and remains outside CashPilot's firewall ownership. The new fleet warning and placement finding disclose the missing fence but do not prevent auto-mode deployment.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Repeated unsupported reconciliations perform status-only updates rather than helper mutations. The existing helper path remains lock-serialized with cleanup in finally, but it is deliberately not exercised for unsupported mode. Complete scheduling overlap and real Podman interruption behavior remain unverified.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Require explicit acceptance before unsupported auto-mode deployments run unfenced, and preserve recorded isolation intent as a refusal condition. An operator-managed, independently enforced network can provide an alternative containment boundary; a status warning alone cannot.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 66.67% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 9 functions across 3 files. (3 skipped: 3 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

- Around line 666-667: The engine-detection path currently treats an
unsuccessful Podman check as sufficient to proceed as Docker. Update the
decision logic around is_podman so a failed `/version` check remains an unknown
engine and cannot enable auto-mode fencing; log the detection failure at debug
level, while preserving MODE_UNSUPPORTED when Podman is successfully identified.
