fix(isolation): wait for another process's fence helper instead of killing it - #26
Review mirror of the upstream PR on GeiserX/CashPilot, for CodeRabbit. Fixes land on the upstream PR.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved handling of helper containers that are already running, stale, or timing out, reducing conflicts when multiple operations use the helper.
Ensured cleanup targets only the helper instance created by the current operation; containers with the same name but no identifying label are left untouched.
Added a retry for container-name conflicts and missing images, while preserving error handling for other Docker failures.
…lling it
The worker force-removed any container named cashpilot-fence that carried
the fence label before starting its own. On a host that also runs the
Desktop app, that is the other side's helper while it is still running, so
the other side recorded a failed fence and refused its deploy.
The worker now waits for a helper that is running, or was created or exited
in the last 10 seconds, and removes only a leftover. A create that loses the
race on the name is tried once more. Its own helper is created and started
apart and removed by its own object, never by name.
run_helper now coordinates with existing labeled containers before creating and starting a helper. It removes stale helpers and cleans up the specific container instance it created. The tests cover lifecycle timing, create conflicts, missing images, and Docker errors.
Changes: Fence helper lifecycle

Summary
Coordinate and clean up helper containers app/lan_fence.py, tests/test_lan_fence.py
_clear_helper waits for busy labeled helpers and removes stale or timed-out helpers. Cleanup removes only the container instance created by the caller. Tests cover shared helpers, stale helpers, timeout, and ownership.
Create and start the helper app/lan_fence.py, tests/test_lan_fence.py
run_helper creates and starts the container separately. _helper_spec centralizes its configuration, and _create_helper pulls a missing image and retries one HTTP 409 conflict. Tests cover creation, startup, image pulls, and execution.
geiresx/CashPilot#5: Limits removal of cashpilot-fence to containers with the fence probe label. This PR changes when a labeled helper can be removed.
geiresx/CashPilot#21: Restricts worker Docker access to owner-labeled containers, which affects which existing helpers this PR can inspect and remove.
Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 42986
No concrete issue remains that should block merging. Normal validation against a Docker daemon is still appropriate.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 42986
The change improves cleanup ownership without increasing the firewall helper’s configured privileges or weakening the deployment gate. Remaining uncertainty concerns concurrent processes, interrupted operations, and compatibility with other applications sharing the helper.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The security-sensitive outcome is firewall modification in the Docker host’s network namespace. Contention affects invocations sharing the helper name on that Docker daemon; the helper’s configured authority is broader than an individual workload’s namespace, but is unchanged by this PR.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
inferred — The name and label identify resources for coordination, not authenticated process ownership. Spoofing those Docker-managed attributes requires container-management authority. The inspected change does not introduce a new lower-trust input into the helper command or expand its capabilities.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Once creation returns an object, ordinary start, wait, status, or result-parsing failures enter instance-scoped cleanup. Cleanup failures are logged, and a later invocation can reclaim a labeled leftover. These paths do not establish transactional rollback of firewall changes after process interruption.
