Review mirror of GeiserX#630 (CodeRabbit is rate-limited there). Findings are fixed on the real PR; this one is closed after.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Copies stopped by a traffic cap are retried on later heartbeats after the cap is lifted. Retries stop if the cap returns, and copies already running are not restarted.
    • Copy restarts are handled safely when ownership changes or another restart is already underway, preventing duplicate starts and ensuring copies remain stopped while the cap is active.

…ne box does not keep it stopped

When a reset could not start a copy the cap had stopped, the copy kept its
stopped_by_cap mark and nothing tried again until the next reset, a month
later. Each heartbeat from that worker now starts such a copy again while the
proxy is uncapped and the copy is reported down.

Walkthrough

Heartbeat reports now retry starting eligible copies that were stopped by a traffic cap. In-flight tracking prevents duplicate starts, and retry tests cover failed starts and cap or running-state conditions.

Changes: Proxy-cap restart retries

Layer / File(s) Summary
Heartbeat retry flow
app/main.py, tests/test_proxies.py, docs/proxies.md
Heartbeat handling selects cap-stopped copies that are not running when the proxy is uncapped. Retry tasks recheck proxy state before starting copies, clear the cap-stopped marker after a successful start, and release in-flight tracking after each attempt. Tests cover failed-start retries, copies left down while capped, and already-running copies. The documentation describes retries on later reports.

Possibly related PRs

  • geiresx/CashPilot#27: Both changes retry starting cap-stopped copies on a later heartbeat and retain the marker after a failed retry.
  • geiresx/CashPilot#11: This PR changes when copies receive the marker used here to select copies for restart, and changes settings sent when a copy starts.
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to b2385

A retry can undo an owner’s stop or leave a copy running after its traffic cap returns. Resolve these command-ordering races before merging unless their impact is explicitly accepted.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to b2385

Retries improve recovery after an offline worker returns, but a pending retry can undo a concurrent manual stop. Existing authentication and recorded-copy checks limit exposure; no unauthenticated or cross-worker privilege expansion was established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: A heartbeat retry can read stopped_by_cap as true, then yield before its worker start executes. An owner stop can complete and clear the marker during that interval, yet the pending start can subsequently bring the copy back up. The new recurring retry path therefore widens a pre-existing reset-time race that can override an owner-authorized stop. The marker recheck protects an earlier owner decision, not one concurrent with remote execution.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — A worker-authenticated heartbeat can select retry candidates only among cap-marked copies persisted for that worker, potentially across its recorded proxies. Payload proxy and slug values alone cannot select another worker's retry target. Existing cap-crossing enforcement can stop recorded copies across workers sharing the proxy; that fanout predates this change.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The material failure path is an eligible heartbeat retry overlapping an owner stop: the retry retains its earlier authorization while the remote start is pending, allowing execution after the stop succeeds. This is an owner-control ordering failure, not an established unauthenticated entry path or credential escalation.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Heartbeat authentication remains unchanged and supplies the worker identity used for accounting. Manual copy commands require owner authentication. Automatic recovery uses the persisted cap-stop relationship as delegated restart authority, with cap and marker rechecks constraining that authority.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The strongest existing counterexample test clears the owner's marker before retry execution and verifies that no start occurs. The cap-return test verifies marker preservation after a start, not worker stop/start ordering. Neither establishes that a pending automatic command cannot supersede a later control decision.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Coordinate manual commands, cap stops, and automatic starts through an ordered or versioned per-copy transition protocol. Fence stale starts at execution and reconcile uncertain remote outcomes so a later owner stop remains authoritative despite delays, interruption, or retries.

… pending retry

A retry now rechecks the copy's cap mark before it starts (an owner start or
stop clears it), keeps the mark when the cap came back during the start, and
shares the in-flight set with the reset's starts so the two never double up.
