fix(proxies): keep the running copy when a redeploy's tunnel cannot start - #34
Review mirror of GeiserX#632 (CodeRabbit is rate-limited there). Findings are fixed on the real PR; this one is closed after.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Deployments now verify a replacement tunnel before switching away from the active one, helping keep the existing connection available if startup fails.
If a replacement cannot be promoted, it is cleaned up without proceeding to the next deployment step.
Temporary replacement tunnels are excluded from status results and cleaned up if left behind after an interrupted deployment.
Deployments of the same copy are serialized to prevent overlapping replacements.
…tart
deploy() removed the old earner and tunnel before the new tunnel started, so a
tunnel that failed to start (an image missing locally, a proxy that does not
answer) left the proxy with no copy at all. The new tunnel now starts under a
staged name next to the running copy. Only once it has proved an exit does the
old pair go and the tunnel take the final name, under a lock the heartbeat's
status() shares. The heartbeat never reports a staged tunnel, and a worker
start sweeps one a dead deploy left behind.
Deployment now starts and verifies a replacement sidecar under a staged name before swapping it with the running pair. Status collection excludes staged sidecars, and tunnel sweeping removes staged sidecars left behind.
Changes: Staged tunnel deployment
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Stage and promote replacement app/proxy_tunnel.py, tests/test_proxy_tunnel.py
deploy starts and verifies the replacement sidecar under a staged name, then removes the existing pair and renames the staged sidecar before deploying the earner. Startup failures preserve the existing pair. Swap failures remove the staged sidecar. Tests cover staged-name collisions and deployment order.
Handle staged sidecars in status and sweeping app/proxy_tunnel.py, tests/test_proxy_tunnel.py
status uses the swap lock and excludes staged sidecars. sweep_test_tunnels removes staged sidecars and includes their names in the results. Tests cover status filtering and sweeping.
geiresx/CashPilot#11: Both changes protect an existing tunnel during redeployment; this PR stages and verifies the replacement before removal.
geiresx/CashPilot#15: Its filtered Docker API policy is relevant to this PR’s staged-sidecar rename operation.
geiresx/CashPilot#21: Its container ownership rules are relevant to this PR’s staged tunnel and earner deployment flow.
Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 27b24
No newly established issue blocks merging. The previously reported cross-worker cleanup concern should still be addressed or explicitly accepted.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 27b24
Staging protects the running copy when a replacement cannot start. However, interruption followed by a quick restart can leave an unreported tunnel retaining proxy credentials after the copy is stopped or removed.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: A deployment interrupted after starting its staged tunnel can leave a credential-bearing container outside normal lifecycle control. If the worker restarts before that container is 300 seconds old, startup cleanup deliberately retains it and does not schedule another attempt. Status hides it, while per-copy stop and removal address only final container names. The abandoned tunnel can therefore remain running, retain its secret volume, and restart with Docker until a later cleanup action occurs.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The recovery concern affects credential-bearing staged sidecars on the affected Docker daemon. Temporary naming permits one staged container per service and proxy identity. Each carries proxy authentication material and tunnel network authority; the concern does not establish host privilege escalation or fleet-wide compromise.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The supported failure path is an authorized deployment, process interruption while its staged sidecar exists, and restart before the 300-second cleanup threshold. The sidecar is then omitted from status and bypassed by per-copy stop or removal. Persistence of its credentials and authority follows without requiring a new unauthenticated API path; attacker-induced interruption was not established.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The worker route verifies its active API key before invoking deployment and validates caller-supplied earner and proxy settings. Proxied earners cannot select their network, publish ports, mount volumes, request host devices, or acquire capabilities forbidden for the shared tunnel namespace. Deployment continues to supply the namespace internally rather than accepting a caller-selected container target.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Existing recovery paths limit but do not close the orphan gap: another deployment removes a matching staged leftover, startup sweeping removes sufficiently old stages, and service-wide removal includes managed proxied containers. Tests cover young-stage retention and same-process deploy serialization, but those mechanisms do not provide eventual cleanup after a quick restart.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Give staged resources explicit deployment ownership and eventual reconciliation. Preserve protection for active deployments, but retry cleanup of young abandoned stages and make per-copy lifecycle actions account for them, so credentials and tunnel authority cannot outlive their owning deployment unnoticed.

- Around line 581-589: Coordinate the staged-sidecar sweep with deployments
using a shared cross-worker mechanism that covers the full staging-to-promotion
lifecycle. Update the deployment flow and the cleanup loop over `staged` before
it calls `_remove_quietly` so the sweep cannot remove a sidecar owned by an
active deployment; retain cleanup for stages established as abandoned.
