Review mirror of GeiserX#640 (CodeRabbit is rate-limited there). Findings are fixed on the real PR; this one is closed after.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Stopping a proxied copy now stops its tunnel before its earner. The operation continues to report whether either container was running and returns an error when neither container belongs to the requested copy.
    • Readiness checks now correctly report the resulting pair as not ready if stopping either container fails.

…p is not undone

proxy_tunnel.stop stopped the earner first. When the tunnel stop then failed,
the next heartbeat found a ready tunnel beside a stopped earner and started the
earner again, losing the stop. The tunnel now stops first; an earner left
running without its tunnel has no way out and the heartbeat leaves it alone.
Same fix as CashPilot-Desktop's stopProxied.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

stop now stops the tunnel sidecar before the earner. The change preserves the ownership check, return calculation, and stop timeouts. Tests check the stop order and cover failures while stopping either container.

Changes: Proxy tunnel shutdown

Layer / File(s) Summary
Sidecar-first shutdown and failure coverage
app/proxy_tunnel.py, tests/test_proxy_tunnel.py
stop stops the tunnel sidecar before the earner. Tests verify the order and check that a ready tunnel does not trigger an earner action after either stop attempt fails.

Change: Bug fix

Possibly related PRs

  • geiresx/CashPilot#11: Changes the stop return value used for cap handling; this PR preserves that return contract.
Merge Risk: Minimal · up to d47c1

The shutdown order prevents the identified heartbeat restart scenario. No merge-blocking risk remains.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to d47c1

Stopping the tunnel first improves failure containment without expanding access or privileges. Recovery after interruption and overlapping start/stop requests remain incompletely established, so this is not an unconditional safety assessment.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed stop operation targets the named service/proxy pair on one worker and acts only on containers passing the existing managed, service, and proxy-label checks. Invoking it through HTTP still requires the worker's accepted credential; the reorder does not add authority over other pairs or workers.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Caller-controlled service and proxy identifiers cross an authenticated worker API before reaching Docker operations. Authentication fails closed when no key is configured and compares the bearer credential against the enrolled worker key or pre-enrollment shared key. Container ownership checks remain between those identifiers and the stop calls.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Sidecar-first shutdown improves containment of sequential partial stops, but does not establish serialized lifecycle transitions. Start and stop are independently dispatched to worker threads, and heartbeat can also mutate earner state. The inspected code therefore does not prove a stop-intent invariant across overlapping operations; this is not evidence of a newly reachable attacker privilege.
