fix: retry a refused release check within the hour, so a rate-limited startup no longer hides updates for a day - #39
Release checks for the UI and Android now run on a 15-minute scheduler tick. Failed requests or unusable release tags trigger a one-hour retry cooldown, while successful checks retain the 24-hour interval.
Changes: Release-check retry behavior
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Retry policy and release-check handling app/update_check.py, tests/test_update_check_retry_after_failure.py
Both release checks use a one-hour cooldown after failed requests or unusable tags. They preserve the cached tag on failure and retain the 24-hour interval after success. Tests cover these behaviors and reset the failure state.
Scheduler tick and retry timing app/main.py, tests/test_main_routes.py, tests/test_update_check_retry_after_failure.py
The UI and Android release-check jobs use the 15-minute scheduler tick. Tests check that the job intervals support retries within the failure cooldown.
No actionable release-check risk remains identified; the change is mergeable after normal checks.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 93e5a
The shorter retry cadence remains bounded, and release checks do not gain update privileges or become directly triggerable through HTTP requests. Failed checks can retain stale advisory version information. Remaining coverage gaps limit assurance beyond the inspected paths.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — For a stable process following normal scheduler execution, sustained failures produce roughly one outbound attempt per hour per release track rather than daily attempts. Cached server information feeds update status, while the Android reference can affect version-skew indicators across the displayed Android fleet. Neither consumer grants execution authority from the release tag.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Release-status HTTP handlers read cached state rather than invoking release fetches. The status endpoint retains authentication, update information retains owner authorization, and the separate update action remains owner-only. The cadence change does not connect an HTTP request to the cooldown-bypassing force parameter or automatic installation.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — The cooldown is not a cross-process or in-flight reservation: overlapping callers can pass its pre-I/O check, cancellation can leave an attempt unstamped, and restart clears it. These limitations predate the PR. Unchanged per-job single-instance and coalescing controls, together with the configured HTTP timeout, constrain ordinary scheduler overlap but do not establish a deployment-wide rate limit.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Consider exposing last-success freshness separately from the cached version so operators can distinguish previously known release information from a recently verified result. This is optional advisory-state hardening, not an established security finding.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title matches the main change. The PR adds a one-hour retry after a failed or tag-less release check, and it shortens the scheduler tick so the retry runs in time. The title states the retry behavior and the startup problem it fixes. It is long, at 20 words, but it is specific and accurate.
