fix: give a proxied copy of ProxyRack its own device id, so it earns as a second device - #40
…as a second device
A proxied copy reused the original's device id, so the provider saw one device on two IPs and the copy earned nothing of its own. The copy now gets an id derived from the original and the proxy (same shape, stable across redeploys), any env value carrying the old id follows it, and the copy is added to the account as a deploy does. An id that cannot be derived refuses the copy with a 400.
Proxied copies receive a derived device ID in their environment and recorded command. The deployment route attempts to register the device and returns registration details. The fleet UI displays guidance when the device remains unregistered.
Changes: Proxied Device Identity
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Derive and propagate device IDs app/proxies.py, tests/test_proxies.py
copy_device_id derives a deterministic, same-length hexadecimal ID. earner_spec replaces the original ID in applicable environment values and the recorded command. Tests cover derivation, propagation, and invalid IDs.
Deploy and register the device app/main.py, tests/test_proxies.py
The deployment route passes the device ID environment key to earner_spec and returns HTTP 400 if ID derivation raises ValueError. After deployment, the route attempts registration and includes the result in its response. The integration test checks the generated ID through deployment and registration.
Show registration guidance app/templates/fleet.html
The fleet UI warns with the device ID, registration steps, and optional URL when the response contains an unregistered device link.
Copies using short device IDs could receive altered configuration values. Restrict replacement to values that depend on the ID; otherwise the remaining risk is narrow and does not appear to block merging.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 97d35
New copies receive independent identities, but their deployment credentials and registration credentials can identify different provider accounts. This creates a conditional risk of unintended account linking. Owner-only access and fixed provider endpoints limit exposure; the provider’s handling of conflicting account registrations remains unverified.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: A new copy runs with its recorded deployment credentials, but explicit registration uses the globally saved collector credential without checking account consistency. If those credentials represent different accounts, deployment and registration act under different authorities, and registered=true does not establish that the intended deployment account owns the device. Normal deployment already had this ambiguity; head newly extends it to fresh proxied-copy identities. Wrong-account linking is a conditional risk, not a verified provider outcome.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The account-authority concern is bounded to owner-initiated copies and provider accounts represented by configured credentials. The route does not expose registration to unauthenticated or reader-role callers, and the inspected ProxyRack sink does not accept an arbitrary destination.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A deployment recorded with account A’s API key can be copied after the global collector credential has been set to account B. Head creates a fresh identity and submits it for registration using B, while the container retains deployment credentials associated with A. Whether this produces unintended ownership, rejection, or competing registrations depends on provider behavior not established here; no arbitrary-attacker account takeover was verified.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Existing controls remain: owner authorization protects deployment and credential changes; catalog link fields may reference only declared non-secret values; URL substitutions are encoded; fleet notifications escape their message text.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Registration occurs after worker deployment. Provider registration failures return false and trigger manual-link guidance rather than an intentional deployment rollback. However, the helper’s collector close operation is outside its registration exception handler, so the stated best-effort guarantee is not absolute; this helper behavior already existed before the PR.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Define one authoritative account for each copy’s registration, and reconcile or require confirmation when its deployment credential and global collector credential differ. Registration status should identify the account authority it confirms.
proposed — Constrain identity rewrites to identity fields and explicitly declared dependent fields, and enforce provider-specific identity lengths before derivation. This would protect unrelated credentials from substring replacement, especially for malformed short IDs; it is a hardening proposal, not a verified credential-exposure finding.

Explanation
The title names the main change: a proxied copy of ProxyRack receives its own device ID so it earns as a second device. The changeset adds per-device ID derivation via copy_device_id in app/proxies.py, marks ProxyRack, EarnApp, Spide, and SpeedShare env keys as per_device, and registers the derived ID for ProxyRack copies. The title is specific and matches the primary objective in the PR objectives.

…nnot be derived
The id a provider knows a device by is now marked per_device: true (ProxyRack, EarnApp, Spide, SpeedShare); a device_link must name a marked key. A copy derives its own value only for marked keys, keeping the original's length and case and the catalog pattern; any other format refuses the copy instead of cloning the identity.

earner_spec can change unrelated environment values when they contain the old ID, including credentials. ProxyRack accepts short hexadecimal IDs at deployment even though its catalog documents 64 characters.
Replace IDs only in the ID field and values known to depend on it. Preserve ID-derived names and commands. A 16-character minimum would reject accepted IDs and would not prevent a longer ID from matching unrelated text.
