Review mirror of GeiserX#665 (CodeRabbit is rate-limited there). Fixes land on the real PR.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Mysterium nodes now run in their own network namespace behind the LAN fence, with configurable WebUI addresses and published UDP port ranges.
    • The worker checks the fence before starting or restarting nodes and holds them stopped if isolation is unavailable. The dashboard explains when a node is waiting to start.
    • Redeploys check that node identity is preserved and use the required runtime and network settings.
  • Documentation

    • Updated Mysterium setup, network security, isolation, and upgrade guidance. Existing nodes deployed through version 2.0.3 require redeployment to use the new network setup.

…ised node cannot rewrite the host firewall

Mysterium ran on the host's network with NET_ADMIN, so the node or a
malicious image update could rewrite the host's firewall (the LAN fence
included), add routes, bind any host port and reach the LAN, the tailnet,
cloud metadata and every other container. No host rule holds against that.

The node now runs in its own network namespace on cashpilot-isolated, with
its UDP range published 1:1 and its WebUI published on the UI_ADDRESS host
addresses (loopback by default). Docker gives it no restart policy: the
worker starts it only after reading the fence back complete, and a 30 s
guard stops it when a fence rule goes or the container is recreated on the
host network, privileged, with another capability, image or restart policy.
A redeploy checks the node keeps its identity.

The catalog refuses NET_ADMIN or SYS_ADMIN with host networking, without a
digest-pinned image, or without fence_gated. The image is pinned, runc wins
over an operator gVisor default, drift and the isolation check flag a node
still on the host network, and the socket proxy no longer allows the host
cgroup namespace. Existing nodes move on their next redeploy (UPGRADING.md).

Walkthrough

Mysterium now uses its own network namespace on a fenced bridge, with configured UI and UDP port publication. Deployment and worker code validate its image, network, runtime, and fence requirements. The worker monitors the fence and container state. Documentation describes migration and operating changes.

Changes: Mysterium isolation and deployment

Layer / File(s) Summary
Catalog shape and port generation
app/catalog.py, app/compose_generator.py, services/bandwidth/mysterium.yml, tests/test_catalog_devices.py, tests/test_mysterium_fenced.py, tests/test_mysterium_udp_ports.py
The catalog adds UI address parsing, UDP range expansion, and network-shape validation. Mysterium uses a digest-pinned image, runc, fence gating, and configured UI and UDP port mappings.
Deployment spec and worker validation
app/main.py, app/worker_api.py, tests/test_beads_batch_56.py, tests/test_mysterium_fenced.py, tests/test_mysterium_ui_address.py, tests/test_worker_api_coverage.py
The deployment API rebuilds the gated service’s network mode and port bindings. Workers advertise fence_gated and validate the service image, network mode, and published-port count.
Fence-gated container lifecycle
app/orchestrator.py, app/lan_fence.py, app/worker_api.py, app/templates/fleet.html, tests/test_lan_fence.py, tests/test_mysterium_fenced.py, tests/test_mysterium_sudo_capabilities.py, tests/test_owner_volumes.py, tests/test_redeploy_keeps_live_mounts.py, tests/test_socket_proxy.py, tests/test_worker_resources.py
The orchestrator creates gated containers before starting them and checks the fence before startup. The periodic guard checks fence and container state, respects owner-stopped markers, and reports held containers in the fleet view.
Isolation checks, drift, and proxy policy
app/drift.py, app/isolation_check.py, app/lan_isolation.py, app/orchestrator.py, app/socket_policy.py, docker-compose*.yml, contrib/app-stores/*/docker-compose.yml, tests/test_container_runtime.py, tests/test_lan_isolation.py, tests/test_mysterium_fenced.py, tests/test_socket_proxy.py, tests/test_worker_resources.py
Drift and isolation checks now account for gated network, port, image, and capability requirements. The socket proxy denies host cgroup namespaces, and its policy fingerprint is updated across Compose configurations.

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Possibly related PRs

  • geiresx/CashPilot#1: It adds host-network and host-cgroup namespace probes. This PR removes the socket proxy’s host-cgroup namespace allowance, so the changes affect the same policy and probe behavior.
Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 01e73

Mysterium now runs on the fenced bridge, but outside the fully enforced fence mode other containers on the bridge may reach its WebUI. The upgrade guidance and dashboard text also overstate what happens automatically. Operators of upgraded nodes could wait on a node that needs a redeploy, or believe they are protected when they are not. Address these before merging or accept them explicitly.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 01e73

The change substantially reduces the ability of a compromised node to modify the host firewall. However, the management interface gains a container-network access path when isolation is disabled or delegated, and manual deployments retain a pre-existing restart path without fence readiness checks. These bounded exposures and recovery limitations warrant moderate design risk.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: The WebUI now listens on every container interface even when UI_ADDRESS requests host-loopback publication. In off or legacy mode, or an operator network that permits peer traffic, a neighboring compromised container can address the WebUI directly rather than use the loopback-bound host port. The base default listened only on host loopback. The retained verification establishes a beneficiary-management attack path where public default credentials remain. This is an introduced management-boundary expansion, although the managed isolation-on bridge disables inter-container communication and limits the affected configurations.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The introduced management exposure is bounded to nodes reachable directly on a container network that permits the connection. A peer foothold can bypass the intended host-loopback publication boundary and target that node's management and settlement configuration. The supplied verification does not establish fleet-wide compromise or host-code execution through this path.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The retained WebUI finding combines newly reachable container-interface management access with public default credentials and the WebUI's authenticated beneficiary endpoint. Exploitation depends on network reachability and credentials remaining at their defaults; managed bridge peer isolation is the strongest inspected limiting control.
  • observed — The retained manual-restart finding remains applicable: the documented hand-created container uses unless-stopped, has no management labels, and is excluded from the label-selected guard. It can start before fence restoration. This restart policy and absence of worker gating predate the PR; the base additionally used host networking with NET_ADMIN. The comparison therefore supports residual risk, not a claim that this PR worsened that condition. Exact transient packet exposure was not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Worker-owned catalog checks prevent deployment requests from restoring host networking or substituting an unpinned Mysterium image. This separates caller configuration authority from the network namespace containing NET_ADMIN. It does not make all deployments fence-enforced: off, legacy, and operator modes deliberately retain different policy ownership.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The new guard checks fence, container shape, and identity before automatic recovery. Explicit API-key-protected start/restart operations check current fence readiness but do not synchronously apply the same shape and identity checks. A legacy host-network container can therefore be restarted until a later guard pass stops it. This limits the new recovery guarantee, but equivalent host-network execution already existed in the base and is not retained as an introduced exposure.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Protect direct WebUI access independently of host port publication. Require a network policy that excludes untrusted peers or equivalent authenticated management protection in every supported isolation mode, rather than treating a loopback host binding as sufficient.
  • proposed — Use a shared lifecycle preflight for automatic and explicit starts, coordinate it with durable owner-stop state, and provide a fence-aware startup mechanism for manual deployments. These would strengthen containment and recovery beyond the observed controls.

Explanation

The title names the main change: Mysterium is moved into a fenced network namespace like other earners, so a compromised node cannot rewrite host firewall rules. The changeset matches this. It adds catalog and worker fence-gating for Mysterium, a fenced bridge with a published UDP range, fence-gated startup and guard logic, and a socket-proxy change that disables host cgroup namespaces. The title is single-sentence, specific, and uses the conventional commit prefix.

Run the identity check inside the container.

The new bridge configuration keeps port 4050 on the container's loopback, so this host-side curl cannot reach it. Use docker exec cashpilot-mysterium wget -qO- http://127.0.0.1:4050/identities to let users verify the identity after recreation. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the identity-check instruction in the Mysterium guide to run the request
inside the container using the documented Docker exec and wget command, since
port 4050 is bound to container loopback. Keep the identity endpoint unchanged.

…n the same node at once

A guard pass that overlapped a redeploy could read the old node's identity
after deploy_raw recorded it, match it and delete the record, so the new
node was never compared; it could also start the old node between its stop
and its removal. deploy_raw now holds a lock for fence-gated services, and
while it is held the guard only stops.

Start and Restart of a held node answered 'started' and ran it until the
next guard pass stopped it again. They now refuse a node the guard would
hold for its shape or a different identity, not only for a missing fence.
…d the fence test really do

The 101-port default cost about 250 MB in docker-proxy processes for about
50 concurrent sessions a home node never sees. The default is now
56000:56029, inside the old range, so existing router forwards stay valid,
and the hint and guide say 20 to 30 ports are enough.

UPGRADING said an old host-network node keeps running until redeployed; the
upgraded worker stops it at once. The identity check is described as the
best-effort net it is, the fence probe now runs a control first and shows the
iptables-legacy counters, UI_ADDRESS is described as this machine's
addresses, the hand-made container has no restart policy, and the fleet page
no longer says a node held for its shape starts by itself.
…r's network, so other earners cannot reach its WebUI

In off and legacy mode a fence-gated node sat on Docker's default bridge,
where inter-container traffic is on and its WebUI now listens on 0.0.0.0
inside its namespace: any other earner could reach port 4449 and, with the
default password, change the payout wallet. Before the move it listened on
host loopback only. Outside on and operator mode the worker now refuses the
deploy before the running node is touched, refuses Start, and the guard
stops a node already running there, with a reason that says how to turn
isolation on.
…ork, and start a hand-made one only behind the fence

In operator mode a node left on Docker's default bridge, or on our fenced
bridge, was started as if the operator's rules covered it. The guard now
holds it until it is on CASHPILOT_CONTAINER_NETWORK.

The guide's hand-made container was started by docker run before any fence
check, and its after-reboot start trusted a log line. It is now created, and
started only when the fence's host rule is in the table.
…il its owner redeploys it

Every node deployed through 2.0.3 runs on the host's network, and the
upgraded worker's guard stopped it within seconds of starting, in any
isolation mode, so an upgrade took the node down before anyone chose to
move it. A fence-gated service's container on the host's network is now
left exactly as it is: the guard neither stops nor starts it, and Start,
Stop and Restart work on it as before. Drift and the isolation check keep
flagging it.

Only deploy and redeploy are refused outside on and operator mode, and the
refusal, the drift finding, the isolation check and UPGRADING give the
order: switch isolation on in Fleet, then redeploy Mysterium once.
…p a stop

Review round on the fenced Mysterium node:
- the guard stops gated nodes when the isolation mode can't be read, and
treats a node attached to a second network as off the fence
- the fence read refuses a cashpilot-isolated network recreated without
the interface name its rules match
- Stop is recorded under the guard's lock and fails if it can't be recorded,
so a guard pass can't start the node again behind it
- a deploy can't relabel the node out of the guard's sight, and a retry over
an unconfirmed replacement keeps the identity it has to match
- fence-gated services have no Compose export, which would run them unfenced
- messages name the service from the catalog; drift checks the UDP range and
claims NET_ADMIN only when the container has it; the container-down alert
no longer promises a restart policy for a fenced node
- docs: runc in the manual command, the manual node is not taken over by a
redeploy, the NAT check runs inside the node, a rollback to the previous
release removes and redeploys; releases through 2.0.6 still run the node on
the host network, so the references say 2.0.6
