fix(mysterium): keep the running node when Docker refuses its replacement - #45
Deployment checks now verify that containers start successfully, connect to the expected network, and publish required ports. Failed deployments are held back from restarting automatically.
If a replacement deployment fails, the previous node is restored when possible.
Updates
Mysterium’s default UDP port range is now 23000–23029. Update router forwarding before redeploying nodes using an older range.
Documentation explains port conflicts that can prevent startup, the need to keep the range below 32768, and that UPnP is no longer supported.
…ment
A deploy removed the running container before it knew the new one could
start, so one host port another program held cost the node. The old one is
now stopped and moved aside, and put back and started again, with its
identity and stop records as they were, when the new one cannot be created
or started or comes up with no network.
The guard no longer starts a fence-gated container a failed deploy left, or
one not attached to its network with its ports published, and stops and
marks one that comes up with no address; it logs the start only once the
container is on its network.
A deploy that works lifts the failed mark even when the record cannot be
written, so the guard never keeps stopping the node its owner just
redeployed.
The default UDP range moves to 23000:23029, below Linux's ephemeral range
(32768-60999), where any host program can take a port and fail the whole
publish. A range on record is kept; the refusal says when a taken port was
ephemeral and what to do.
The Mysterium default UDP range changes to 23000:23029, with updated upgrade and configuration guidance. Deployment now rolls back failed replacements and checks gated containers for expected network attachment, running state, and declared port bindings.

The documented and configured default changes to 23000:23029. The migration guidance describes updating router forwarding and retaining existing recorded ranges. Tests expect the new range.
Replacement deployment and rollback app/orchestrator.py, tests/test_mysterium_fenced.py
The old container is retained until its replacement starts. On deployment failure, rollback attempts to restore the old container’s name, running state, identity, and hold records. Error messages can include a hint for ephemeral-port conflicts.
Fence readiness and failed-deploy tracking app/orchestrator.py, app/lan_fence.py, tests/test_mysterium_fenced.py
Failed gated deployments are tracked and held by the guard. Started containers are checked for running state and an address on the expected network. Gated-container validation checks declared WebUI and UDP bindings.
geiresx/CashPilot#44: Updates overlapping Mysterium UDP port guidance for conflicts with Linux’s ephemeral port range.
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 3f318
Existing nodes may keep their old ports despite the upgrade instructions. Some failed or deferred redeployments can also leave nodes stopped or unable to restore the previous container. Resolve these paths before merging.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 3f318
The new rollback path improves ordinary replacement failures, but retained containers can lose their stop and identity holds after renaming. Temporary-name cleanup can also target another service, while stale failure state can stop a healthy replacement. Existing network and privilege checks limit the exposure, but recovery needs stronger ownership guarantees.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: A retained NAME-replaced container keeps its managed-service labels, but stop, failed-deploy and identity records remain keyed to NAME. If failed-replacement removal or rename-back fails, the guard can subsequently select and start the retained container without the original stop or identity hold. This newly created recovery state can reactivate a previously stopped or held workload. Fence, catalog and post-start network checks still apply, so this does not establish a LAN-isolation bypass.
Medium · architecture · inferred: The new aside cleanup treats any distinct container at NAME-replaced as an abandoned replacement and force-removes it without checking service or instance ownership. The custom-service slug generator permits both custom-foo and custom-foo-replaced, so redeploying the former can delete the latter if both are deployed on the same worker. Unlike the existing target-container ownership check, this cleanup trusts the name alone. For custom services, removal also requests deletion of anonymous volumes; named volumes are retained.
Medium · reliability · inferred: On a retry of a previously marked deployment, the replacement inherits the name's failed-deploy hold until after startup and old-container removal. A concurrent guard pass can therefore attempt to stop the running replacement even while deployment holds the lock, because that lock suppresses starts but not stops. If old-container cleanup raises, the marker clear is skipped; a fence-deferred replacement also retains the old marker. These paths can strand recovery or disable a replacement that otherwise passed readiness checks.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The supported exposure is within an affected worker: retained workloads can run contrary to their original holds, and computed temporary-name cleanup can remove a colliding service and its anonymous volumes. Persistent identity data mounted by those workloads is also relevant. The inspected paths do not establish cross-tenant access, access to the UI's protected resources, or additional host privileges.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The authority-loss path is replacement failure followed by unsuccessful cleanup or restoration, leaving a labelled NAME-replaced container. A later guard pass evaluates the suffixed name rather than NAME's stop and identity records and can start it if remaining checks pass. Published-port conflicts can prevent that start, and fence/specification checks remain effective; no successful runtime bypass was demonstrated.
inferred — A caller-controlled custom-service name can produce a legitimate slug ending in -replaced. If that service coexists with the corresponding unsuffixed service, replacement cleanup can mistake it for stale lifecycle state and delete it. This is an ownership and failure-containment defect, not an established privilege escalation: custom-service creation is owner-protected and worker deployment checks an API key.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The guard checks the fence, catalog image, privilege/capability limits, restart policy and expected network before starting an eligible container. Its new post-start validation adds containment rather than broader network authority. The socket policy allows rename and deletion within its worker-owner boundary, so it does not replace the missing per-service ownership check in aside cleanup.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Failure-state durability and cleanup ordering remain recovery limitations. Unwritable failed-marker updates fall back to process-local memory, which does not survive restart. Separately, old-container removal happens before successful-deploy marker clearing and outside the create/start recovery handler. These conditions can lose a new hold or preserve a stale one; their Docker and restart outcomes were not exercised.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Use a durable deployment identity and explicit retained-container state rather than inferring ownership from a fixed name. Verify ownership before cleanup, preserve stop and identity holds across renames, and make marker handoff and restart recovery part of the same lifecycle protocol, including guard passes that already hold a snapshot.

…fails
The guard cleared its unfenced report on any error in the pass, so a second
node that failed to start on every pass hid the Fleet move of the one still
on the host network. Only a scan that did not finish clears it now.
_ephemeral_hint hardcodes service-specific values in app/.
The hint names UDP_PORTS and the default 23000:23029. Both are Mysterium catalog values. The function also runs for every APIError of every service. An ordinary earner with a taken UDP port in 32768-60999 therefore gets advice about a UDP_PORTS setting it may not have. The default is now repeated in services/bandwidth/mysterium.yml and here, and the two copies can drift apart.
Pass slug. Return a hint only when the catalog entry declares docker.udp_port_range. Read the env key from udp_port_range.env, and read the default from the matching docker.env entry. Then update the _ephemeral_hint(BIND_REFUSED) calls in tests/test_mysterium_fenced.py to pass a slug.

An error in _move_aside leaves the old node stopped and not rolled back.
old.stop() runs at Line 927, before _move_aside. _move_aside can raise an APIError that nothing catches. The leftover removal can raise it. The _remove_container(old, slug) call after a failed rename can raise it too. In that case replaced is still None. The error leaves deploy_raw as a raw APIError, and _roll_back never runs. The old node stays stopped and nothing restarts it.
An ordinary earner stays down until someone redeploys it. This breaks the PR goal of keeping the running node. Restart the old container if _move_aside raises.

A failed removal of the replaced container turns a successful deploy into an error.
The new container is already running at this point. _remove_container(replaced, slug) can raise an APIError, for example "removal already in progress". The exception skips _mark_failed(name, False) and fails the deploy response. A stale failed marker then stays set. On the next guard pass, FAILED_DEPLOY makes the guard stop the node that is running.
Clear the marker first. Treat the removal of the old container as best effort and log any failure.

The guard can start the -replaced container.
docker rename keeps the labels. lan_fence._gated selects containers by LABEL_SERVICE and fence_gated, so it also returns cashpilot-mysterium-replaced. If that container survives after the deploy lock is released, the guard sees it as a stopped gated container that is not in user_stopped(). The guard then calls c.start() on it.
This can happen when the leftover removal fails, or when a rollback keeps the old node aside. The old node then runs even though _roll_back reports it as "kept, stopped". This also ignores stopped_before, because the stopped marker is keyed by the original name. If the new node is running, the start can fail on the port bindings. The exception then aborts the whole guard pass.
Make the guard skip starting names that end with REPLACED_SUFFIX. Apply the same filter in lan_fence.guard.

The rollback message is wrong when _move_aside removed the old container.
_move_aside returns None in two cases. In the first, no old container existed. In the second, the rename failed and the old container, possibly a running node, was removed. In the second case _roll_back still reports "No container ran under that name before, so nothing was put back." That tells the owner nothing was lost when a node was removed.
Track whether an old container existed. For example, return a sentinel or a flag from _move_aside. Then say the previous container was removed because it could not be moved aside.

Document a working UDP range migration
If a node has an old range on record, the dashboard redeploy keeps it. Even an API request with 23000:23029 keeps the old range because that value equals the catalog default. Changing the router forward then leaves it unmatched, so direct connections can fail.
Document a migration that applies the range before changing the forward. For example, the deploy API accepts a non-default range as an explicit override.
