Review mirror of GeiserX#677.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added mode-specific guidance for moving nodes onto the fenced network when isolation settings prevent fencing.
    • Drift alerts can include move recommendations, deployment guidance, and warnings about UDP port ranges that overlap the host’s ephemeral range.
    • Isolation findings now include remediation guidance based on the worker’s isolation mode.
    • Redeploy actions are shown only when redeploying can move the node.
  • Documentation
    • Updated isolation guidance to explain deployment behavior across isolation modes and Podman, including when deployments are refused or running nodes are stopped.

…st-network node

The drift finding, the isolation check and the mode refusal all told an
owner to switch isolation on before redeploying a Mysterium node still on
the host's network. In operator mode switching isolation on is refused, and
in on mode it is already on, so the advice sent owners to a step that fails.
Each now names the step for the worker's mode: a redeploy alone in on and
operator mode, isolation on first in legacy, the setting in off, and no
fence on Podman.

The dashboard item leads with that step, lists the reasons after it, and
offers Redeploy only where a redeploy can work. When the recorded UDP range,
which the redeploy keeps, overlaps Linux's ephemeral range, it says so
before the owner presses Redeploy.

Walkthrough

The change adds mode-specific movement advice for fence-gated host-network services, including warnings for recorded UDP ranges that overlap Linux’s ephemeral range. Isolation findings and dashboard drift alerts now use the advice.

Changes: Fence-Gated Host-Network Drift Advice

Layer / File(s) Summary
Movement advice and UDP range checks
app/constants.py, app/orchestrator.py, app/lan_fence.py, app/drift.py, tests/test_mysterium_fenced.py
EPHEMERAL_PORTS is defined centrally. Movement advice varies by isolation mode and checks recorded UDP ranges for overlap with the ephemeral range. Host-network drift messages no longer include the previous remediation instructions. Tests cover mode-specific advice and UDP range warnings.
Mode-aware isolation findings
app/isolation_check.py, docs/isolation.md, tests/test_mysterium_fenced.py
Isolation findings pass the effective worker mode to shared movement advice. Documentation and tests cover the mode-specific refusal and finding guidance.
Dashboard drift advice
app/main.py, app/static/js/app.js, tests/test_drift.py, tests/test_mysterium_fenced.py
Worker isolation mode and available movement advice are added to deployed-service data. Drift alerts display the advice and warning when present. Owners are offered Redeploy only when a deployment record and worker ID are present and advice allows redeployment.

Change: Bug fix

Possibly related PRs

  • geiresx/CashPilot#44: Documents Mysterium redeploy failures and UDP range selection related to ephemeral-port overlap.
Merge Risk: Minimal · previous review f6db7

The changed guidance and dashboard actions appear consistent with the supported isolation modes. No actionable merge-blocking risk is established.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to f6db7

The change primarily improves migration guidance rather than granting new deployment authority. Existing authorization and isolation checks remain in place. Missing or stale worker information can make the dashboard more conservative, but reporting freshness and some security coverage remain unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The changed advice path is scoped to applicable drift on CashPilot-managed instances and further gated by the service’s fence requirement and host-network shape. It does not automatically modify containers, router forwards, firewall rules, or worker configuration.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — No new metadata-to-deployment bypass was established. An optimistic or manipulated mode can affect the displayed action, but actual deployment still requires owner authorization and independent server and worker isolation validation. Advice text and warnings are escaped before HTML rendering.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The deployed-services endpoint retains reader authorization, while deployment uses a separate owner-gated route. Isolation admission still permits only on or operator mode; operator mode relies on the operator’s network rules rather than a CashPilot-managed fence. The PR changes guidance, not this allocation of security responsibility.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Existing fence-gated replacement controls include serialization, service and instance ownership checks, preservation of pending identity comparisons across retries, and identity restoration during rollback. Failed leftovers are marked to prevent guard startup, and recovery may deliberately keep a previous node stopped when the fence cannot be confirmed.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: each isolation mode now gets a single remediation step that moves a host-network Mysterium node. The raw summary shows move_advice added across drift.py, lan_fence.py, isolation_check.py, main.py, app.js, and docs, and the objectives describe redeploy, enable-isolation-first, setting-change, and Podman no-fence advice per mode. The title's 'fix(mysterium)' prefix is conventional and accurate.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Dedupe the UDP range regex.

The pattern (\d{1,5}):(\d{1,5}) appears twice, at Lines 159 and 164. Extract a module-level compiled constant. This is a small cleanup and the code works as written.

…d a refused deploy popped, and record one node per IP

The ephemeral-range warning now gives the other route: keep the range and
reserve it with net.ipv4.ip_local_reserved_ports, persisted in sysctl.d.
The worker reads its own network namespace, not the host's, so it cannot
see the reservation; the warning says a box that reserved it can redeploy.

A deploy refused because the running node's identity could not be read
dropped a mismatch hold kept only in memory. It is restored now, like the
stop and rename refusals already did.

MystNodes allows one node per public IP; the catalog said unlimited.
