Review mirror of GeiserX#679.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Mysterium deployment checks flag the one-node-per-public-IP limit and warn when another node is using the same address.
    • Port-conflict guidance explains how to reserve the existing UDP range on the host and redeploy. Reservations prevent automatic port selection, but not explicit port binds, and warnings may remain.
  • Bug Fixes

    • When a running node’s identity cannot be read during deployment, its existing mismatch hold is restored before deployment is refused.
  • Documentation

    • Updated Mysterium setup and upgrade instructions with port-reservation steps and network configuration details.
    • Added MystNodes’ per-IP device limit to the provider comparison.

…d a refused deploy popped, and record one node per IP

The ephemeral-range warning now gives the other route: keep the range and
reserve it with net.ipv4.ip_local_reserved_ports, persisted in sysctl.d.
The worker reads its own network namespace, not the host's, so it cannot
see the reservation; the warning says a box that reserved it can redeploy.

A deploy refused because the running node's identity could not be read
dropped a mismatch hold kept only in memory. It is restored now, like the
stop and rename refusals already did.

MystNodes allows one node per public IP; the catalog said unlimited.

Walkthrough

The PR adds host-side UDP port reservation instructions to Mysterium guidance and Fleet warnings. It sets Mysterium’s declared device limit to one per public IP. It also documents and tests identity-hold preservation when the running node’s identity cannot be read.

Changes: UDP port reservation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Host-side UDP reservation guidance
app/drift.py, docs/guides/mysterium.md, UPGRADING.md, tests/test_mysterium_fenced.py
The drift warning and documentation describe temporary and persistent host reservation for the recorded UDP range. They state that the Fleet warning remains because the worker cannot read the host reservation. Tests check the instructions and the recorded range. The guide also replaces its --net host statement with the LAN fence description.

Per-IP device limit

Layer / File(s) Summary
Declare and test the per-IP limit
services/bandwidth/mysterium.yml, docs/research/per-ip-device-limits.md, tests/test_preflight.py
Mysterium’s devices_per_ip value changes from 0 to 1. The research table documents the provider limit, and preflight tests check the declaration and the result for an existing deployment.

Identity-hold preservation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Identity hold on deployment refusal
app/orchestrator.py, tests/test_mysterium_fenced.py
A comment documents restoration of the prior identity record and hold when the running node’s identity cannot be read. A test checks that deployment refusal preserves the hold and its visibility through identity_problem.

Possibly related PRs

  • geiresx/CashPilot#44: Both PRs update Mysterium UDP port reservation guidance and address overlap with Linux ephemeral ports.
Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review b34a3

Following either instruction on a host with existing reservations can remove them and allow those ports to be allocated automatically. Correct both instructions before merging.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to b34a3

The deployment change preserves an existing identity safeguard rather than weakening it. The device limit remains advisory. Residual risk concerns manual changes to shared host settings and recovery behavior that was not fully verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The executable fix concerns the identity hold for the named container on its worker. By contrast, an operator applying the reservation command changes the host network namespace's shared reservation list, potentially affecting services beyond Mysterium if existing entries are not retained.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The changed warning remains display text rather than an automatic privileged operation. Its UDP range is extracted using a numeric full-match pattern, and the known dashboard consumer escapes the warning before rendering it. Applying the host configuration still requires an operator to execute the instructions.
  • observed — Gated deploy_raw invocations use an existing process-local lock. Before replacement, the code also verifies the old container's service and instance labels. The PR does not introduce these controls or broaden their authority.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The added regressions cover preservation of a memory-only hold and preservation of a disk record written during the identity read. The latter models an interleaving through a callback; it does not establish process-level concurrency or crash recovery guarantees.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make reading and merging the existing host reservation list an explicit prerequisite in the Fleet warning and upgrade procedure, as the detailed guide already does. This would reduce accidental replacement of unrelated reservations when operators copy the single-range examples.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "mirror of GeiserX#679" only says the PR mirrors an upstream change. It does not name the actual change. The changeset adds Mysterium guidance on UDP port reservation via ip_local_reserved_ports, a one-device-per-IP limit for MystNodes, and an identity-hold fix in deploy_raw. The title is therefore vague about the substance, though it is not unrelated.

Resolution

Rewrite the title to name the primary change, for example: "Document Mysterium UDP port reservation and one node per public IP limit". Keep the upstream reference in the description if needed.

…o only the in-memory pop on the refusal

A reserved range keeps the kernel from handing its ports out, but a program
that binds one by number still takes it. The refusal now puts back only the
hold it popped and leaves the record on disk as it is, so a record written
while the deploy ran is not overwritten.

Preserve all reservations in the effective boot-time assignment

If another sysctl.d file sets ip_local_reserved_ports, reboot can discard either the existing reservations or the Mysterium range. The guide merges both ranges, but a later assignment can still replace them.

In app/drift.py, UPGRADING.md, and docs/guides/mysterium.md, direct operators to inspect sysctl.d precedence and put the combined list in the effective boot-time assignment. Keep the explanation that reservations do not prevent explicit binds.

Outside-diff findings on 0d887c4: (1) mysterium.md reading the existing reservations first: fixed in b34a360, the check now comes before the commands. (2) sysctl.d precedence across other files: declined. The text already says to merge with any ranges already set, and which file wins at boot is general Linux administration, not something this guide should teach. @coderabbitai review

…, and keep a hold set during a refused deploy

The reserve route now says to read the list before sysctl -w replaces it,
uses sudo, and names a .conf file, the only kind systemd-sysctl loads. The
refusal restores the popped hold only when no newer one was set meanwhile.
The guide says the firewall on the operator's own network is theirs.
