fix(ledger): stop a logger with no ledger named from writing into a stray ./buscado.tsv - #4
add and import-tsv now stop with an error when no ledger is specified, no ledger directory is configured, and the default ./buscado.tsv does not exist. The error identifies the missing path, and no file is created or data written.
An existing default ledger remains usable. Specifying a ledger path still allows creation, and add can write to the agent’s lane file when a ledger directory is configured.
When no ledger is configured, reads continue to use ./buscado.tsv. The add and import-tsv commands now exit with code 2 instead of creating that file when it does not exist. Named ledgers and an existing default ledger remain usable.
The CLI uses None as the --ledger default, while reads still select ./buscado.tsv. add and import-tsv reject writes when the implicit ledger is missing; import-tsv applies this check only when --ledger-dir is absent. Tests cover missing and existing default ledgers, explicit ledger paths, and error diagnostics. The usage text and documentation describe the behavior.
The change stops add and import-tsv from creating a stray ./buscado.tsv when no ledger is named. Named ledgers, an existing default file and lane-directory writes still work, and the documentation now matches the behavior. No actionable merge risk remains.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 06838
The change reduces accidental ledger creation without establishing a new privilege or trust-boundary expansion. The refusal is a preflight check, not an atomic guarantee against concurrent file removal. Coverage of external callers remains incomplete.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The inspected change affects local ledger-file selection and creation under the invoking process’s filesystem permissions. It does not add a new privileged sink or expand the authority of the shared append function.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — Concurrent deletion after the guard can still result in default-file recreation because the writer opens in append/create mode. Replacement can also change the file reached by the pathname. Both outcomes were possible before this PR, so they are residual filesystem-control limitations rather than evidence of an introduced attack path.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The new existence check is an accidental-write guard, not authorization or destination-ownership verification. Existing default files remain accepted, and the append lock is acquired only after opening the destination.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — If the no-create policy must hold during concurrent deletion, open the implicit destination without creation and retain that file handle through locking and append. Add focused deletion/replacement tests to distinguish this stronger guarantee from the current preflight behavior.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the main change: the ledger tool no longer writes to a stray ./buscado.tsv when no ledger is named. The changeset matches this. The add and import-tsv commands now exit with code 2 when the default file is missing, and they write nothing. The title uses the fix(ledger) convention and is one sentence. It is specific enough for a teammate to understand the primary change.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description contains only the author's note that this is a review copy of PR #249. It does not follow the repository template. It lacks the Problem, Fix, Shared rules used, and guard-per-test sections. It also lacks the checklist item confirming one concern and a branch from main. The objectives section describes the change, but the author-provided description does not.
Resolution
Fill in the template sections from the repository description template. Under Problem, state that add and import-tsv wrote to a stray ./buscado.tsv when no ledger was named. Under Fix, list the changes in gwt_ledger.py, docs/ledger.md, and CHANGELOG.md. Under Shared rules used, write 'none' if no shared rule applies. Under the guard section, name each new test, the line it guards, and the red output from removing that line. Confirm the checklist item about one concern branched from main.
Full details: Docstring Coverage
Explanation
Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 3 functions across 2 files. (2 skipped: 2 unsupported.)
Resolution
Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Review comments at @docs/ledger.md:
- Line 24: Update the ledger behavior descriptions to distinguish the cases:
without a ledger directory, the default path is not created and missing
`./buscado.tsv` causes `add` and `import-tsv` to exit 2; with `--ledger-dir` or
`$GWT_LEDGER_DIR` and an agent, both commands write the agent’s lane file, and
`add` writes an existing default ledger. Apply this clarification to the
documentation, usage text, and changelog.
Review comments at @ledger/test_gwt_ledger.py:
- Line 632: Update the no-ledger test setup that saves and removes GWT_LEDGER to
also save and remove GWT_LEDGER_DIR, then restore its original value after the
named-ledger checks so the test cannot write to an environment-selected lane
file.
