Addresses #73

Summary

  • add a reusable BenchmarkRunner for repeated Intelligent Contract operations
  • add gltest bench without changing the existing pytest passthrough behavior
  • support direct and configured studio execution paths
  • report mean/median/p95/min/max latency, throughput, process CPU time, and sampled peak RSS
  • add JSON output for regression/CI consumption
  • add deterministic unit coverage for metrics and CLI dispatch
  • document benchmark semantics, including deployment/warmup exclusion and stateful-write caveats

This updates the older RFC to the current v0.30-dev APIs rather than using the outdated genlayer.test.ContractFactory sketch.

Current implementation scope

This PR provides the current-API benchmark foundation and the metrics that can be measured reliably through the existing direct/Studio adapters. It deliberately does not invent or approximate two RFC controls that the current configured remote-Studio path does not expose safely through gltest bench:

  • dynamic validator-count control for an already-running Studio endpoint
  • an isolated “consensus overhead” number that would require a same-environment leader-only/full-consensus comparison

Those follow-ups should build on this runner once the expected current API/lifecycle for simulator validator control and leader-only comparison is agreed, rather than reporting a misleading proxy metric.

CLI

gltest bench contracts/Storage.py --method get_storage --mode direct --iterations 100 --warmup 5
gltest bench contracts/Oracle.py --method resolve --mode studio --iterations 20 --json

Correctness hardening from review

  • failed Studio write receipts are rejected instead of counted as successful samples
  • malformed JSON arguments are reported as CLI usage errors
  • contract stdout is redirected away from machine-readable JSON output
  • RSS sampling is excluded from measured method throughput
  • zero-duration throughput serializes as JSON null, not non-standard Infinity

All five inline CodeRabbit findings are resolved.

Notes

  • deployment is excluded from measured samples
  • direct mode measures native local execution
  • studio mode measures the configured RPC/transaction wait path
  • psutil is used for cross-platform process CPU/RSS metrics
  • state-changing benchmark iterations are intentionally not reset between samples

Review focus

The core review surface is gltest/bench/runner.py plus the direct/Studio adapters in gltest_cli/bench.py. The command is additive and preserves the existing gltest pytest passthrough behavior.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added the gltest bench command to measure contract methods in direct or Studio mode.
    • View results as readable metrics or JSON, with optional per-iteration latency samples.
    • Benchmark reports include timing statistics, throughput, CPU time, and peak memory usage.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on benchmark modes, arguments, execution, reported metrics, and output formats.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds a benchmark result model and runner, a gltest bench command for direct and Studio execution, and documentation for arguments, measurement behavior, metrics, and output formats.

Changes

Contract Benchmarking

Layer / File(s) Summary
Benchmark results and measurement
gltest/bench/runner.py, gltest/bench/__init__.py, pyproject.toml, tests/gltest/bench/test_runner.py
Adds BenchmarkResult and BenchmarkRunner. The runner validates iteration counts, performs warmups before measurement, and reports latency statistics, throughput, CPU time, and peak RSS. Results omit individual samples from as_dict() unless requested. Tests cover the metrics, warmups, validation, and sample serialization.
Benchmark CLI and execution paths
gltest_cli/bench.py, gltest_cli/main.py, tests/gltest_cli/test_bench.py, docs/benchmarking.md
Adds CLI argument parsing and direct and Studio contract execution paths. The command outputs human-readable metrics or JSON, with optional latency samples. Command dispatch, mode selection, arguments, and documented measurement behavior are covered by tests and documentation.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to b6783

The new gltest bench command is additive and does not change the existing test workflow. However, its reported numbers can be misleading: failed Studio writes may count as successes, and throughput for fast direct methods includes measurement overhead. Contract print output can also break JSON consumers. These issues should be addressed before the results are relied on for CI regression checks.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to b6783

The benchmark command uses the normal contract execution APIs and documents that state-changing iterations are not reset. No concrete privilege escalation was established, but interrupted runs can leave submitted transactions and persistent state behind. Concurrent-use and recovery guarantees remain limited.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The immediate exposure is the local execution environment in direct mode or the configured RPC environment and account in Studio mode. A fresh deployment separates each CLI invocation’s primary contract identity, but does not establish isolation of shared accounts, provider resources or downstream contract effects.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The runner has no credential or RPC-selection parameter and only invokes its supplied operation. CLI-selected Studio operations pass through method-kind checks before reaching client read or write calls; authority selection remains outside the measurement layer.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — A Studio run can stop after submitting transactions without producing a benchmark result. Stopping measurement does not undo accepted transactions, and starting the CLI again deploys another contract rather than resuming the interrupted run. The documented no-reset semantics reduce surprise but do not provide recovery tracking.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Consider explicit acknowledgement for state-changing Studio benchmarks and progressive reporting of deployment addresses and transaction identifiers. Document dedicated-account usage and that interruption does not cancel submitted transactions. These are containment and recovery improvements, not verified vulnerability findings.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue [#73] requires a benchmark suite with mean/p95 latency, CPU and memory peak, throughput, and consensus-overhead metrics. The PR implements BenchmarkRunner, direct and studio execution, warmups, latency statistics, throughput, CPU time, and peak RSS. The result schema has no consensus-overhead metric. The CLI also provides no validator or load controls for the proposed studio-mode under-load benchmarking. Tests cover runner metrics and direct/studio dispatch, but they do not cover these missing capabilities.

Review comments at @gltest_cli/bench.py:
- Around line 65-69: Update BenchmarkRunner’s write path around
contract_function.transact to check the returned receipt with
tx_execution_succeeded() before accepting the sample; treat failed receipts as
unsuccessful operations. Preserve the existing contract_function.call path for
read-only operations.
- Around line 156-157: Handle conversion failures from _json_list for --args and
--constructor-args through argparse by registering the conversion as an argument
type or catching ArgumentTypeError and calling parser.error. Ensure malformed
JSON and non-array values produce a CLI usage error rather than a traceback.
- Around line 159-167: Update the runner invocation in the benchmark flow so
that when `args.json` is enabled, stdout produced by contract methods is
redirected to stderr during `runner` execution. Preserve the existing stdout
behavior when JSON output is disabled.

Review comments at @gltest/bench/runner.py:
- Line 114: Update the throughput calculation in the benchmark result
construction to avoid returning infinity when total_seconds is zero; represent
unavailable throughput as null or another finite value, and update the
human-readable output to handle that representation.
- Line 90: Update the benchmark timing around `samples_ms` and `rss_peak` so RSS
sampling via `process.memory_info()` is excluded from `total_ms` and
`throughput_ops_s`. Derive method time from the recorded execution samples, or
move RSS sampling outside the throughput interval.
