Follow-up to #1018. MIT, BSD, ISC, Zlib and Apache-2.0 ask for the licence text itself to ship with the code, not just its name, and two kinds of third-party code had none in the installers:

  • the npm packages Vite bundles into the app (THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.md wrongly said they were not redistributed);
  • the crates compiled into the compositor addon, which docs: add missing third-party notices #1018 only listed.

scripts/generate-third-party-licenses.mjs writes build-licenses/THIRD-PARTY-LICENSES.txt at build time: npm production packages from package-lock.json, crates from cargo metadata (normal dependencies of compositor-view-napi, procedural macros excluded). Each distinct licence text appears once, after the packages that ship it. electron-builder ships it in resources/, beside THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.md.

  • Wiring: every build:* script runs npm run licenses:generate before electron-builder, and build.yml's macOS job, which calls electron-builder directly, gets the same step.
  • Never fails a release over a missing licence file: such a package is recorded with its declared licence, with a warning annotation. A crate's declared license_file is read too.
  • Fails without cargo: every installer ships the addon, so the generator writes nothing rather than a file without its crates. Every build:* script has just built the addon with cargo. before-pack.cjs refuses to package when the file is absent, since electron-builder just logs a missing extraResources source.
  • Not committed: a dependency bump needs no manual step.

Locally: 360 npm packages and 162 crates, 293 distinct texts, 613 KB, byte-identical across runs. 47 packages ship no licence file and are recorded with their declared licence only.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • App packages now include a consolidated file containing license and notice texts for bundled third-party npm packages and compiled Rust crates. The file is generated during builds and shipped alongside the existing third-party notices.
    • The notices clarify where to find the consolidated license texts.

npm code ships bundled by Vite and the crates are linked into
compositor_view.node, but no installer carried their licence texts.
scripts/generate-third-party-licenses.mjs now writes
build-licenses/THIRD-PARTY-LICENSES.txt before every package: the
production entries of package-lock.json and the normal-dependency
closure of compositor-view-napi from cargo metadata, each distinct text
once. A missing licence file or cargo only warns. electron-builder
ships the file beside THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.md, and before-pack.cjs
refuses to package when it is absent.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The build now generates a combined license file for installed production npm packages and Rust crates. Packaging checks for the file and includes it in application resources. The third-party notices reference the generated file.

Changes

Third-party license generation and packaging

Layer / File(s) Summary
Collect and render license texts
scripts/generate-third-party-licenses.mjs, scripts/generate-third-party-licenses.test.mjs
The generator collects license texts for installed production npm packages and the normal-dependency closure of the addon crate. It groups matching normalized texts, sorts package labels, and reports missing license files. Tests cover collection and rendering behavior.
Generate and package the license file
package.json, .github/workflows/build.yml, scripts/before-pack.cjs, electron-builder.json5, THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.md, .gitignore
Build scripts generate the license file before packaging. Packaging checks that it exists and copies it into application resources. The notices reference the generated file, and .gitignore excludes its build directory.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 81a33

The generated licence file may repeat a licence text, but packaging remains usable. This is a bounded issue to fix or explicitly accept before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 7e46e

The change is confined to build-time collection and packaging of license text. No material security issue was established in the inspected paths. The presence check does not guarantee complete or current notices, and coverage of release environments and downstream consumers remains incomplete.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated affected scope is the build environment, generated-output filesystem location, and license text distributed in installers across the listed platforms. The inspected dependency chain ends at resource packaging; wider runtime consumption is not established by the available evidence.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — Dependency-supplied names, declared licenses, and license-file contents influence the generated text. The inspected renderer assembles strings and the main routine writes them to a text file; it does not evaluate those contents as code.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new packaging control enforces file presence only. Missing license files and failed Cargo collection are deliberately tolerated, while the generator’s executable and optional output path remain selected by the local build environment or CLI caller.

in the package-entry mapping to handle Cargo’s `license_file` field: resolve its
manifest-relative path, include the file’s text, and report the declared path
when no `license` value is present. Preserve the existing behavior for crates

- Around line 194-199: Update the catch around cargoMetadata() and

…st the crates

A crate that declares only license-file was labelled without a licence and its text could be missed. And a failing cargo used to write a file without the crates, which before-pack accepted: every installer ships the addon, so the generator now fails instead.
